Ugarte upgrade: Man Utd hoping to sign “monster” for £35m after talks

The writing appeared to be on the wall for Erik ten Hag during that summer of 2024, even after Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co had afforded him a stay of execution, with Manchester United’s transfer business not exactly pointing to joined-up thinking.

Of course, there was yet another raft of Dutch or Ajax-linked arrivals that summer, be it Noussair Mazraoui, Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt, although it appeared evident that not every move was led or influenced by the manager.

Indeed, the decision to swap out Scott McTominay for Manuel Ugarte appeared to be at odds with Ten Hag, with the FA Cup-winning coach later admitting that he “didn’t want” to sell the Scotland star, albeit with the decision likely influenced by the need to meet PSR regulations.

Whether the 55-year-old was happy with that exit or not, he certainly didn’t appear over anamoured with McTominay’s replacement, with Ugarte starting just a solitary Premier League game under his watch, before the manager was sacked in late October.

The Uruguayan would have been delighted with that change in the dugout and the arrival of his former Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim, although just over a year later, his place at Old Trafford already appears under threat.

Man Utd make contact to sign dream Ugarte replacement

Such is the nature of United’s squad right now, amid a string of injury and AFCON absentees, departures are likely to be limited, even for those on the periphery under Amorim.

That said, with Turkish giants Galatasaray seemingly pushing to sign Ugarte this month, INEOS should no doubt consider cashing in, even with both Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo sidelined.

The 24-year-old, who has started just five Premier League games all season, seemingly isn’t United’s long-term midfield solution, with a genuine upgrade needed before the window closes.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast

That perfect replacement could well emerge in the form of Atalanta’s Ederson, with TEAMtalk reporting that talks have already been held – on behalf of intermediaries – to gauge whether a move would be possible for INEOS this month.

As per the report, the Brazilian is a long-term target, with United ready to pounce should he be available for a reduced price in the winter window.

There is a suggestion that the 25-year-old could be on the market for below €40m (£35m), and if that is to be the case, the Red Devils would be ready to strike.

Why Ederson would be the perfect Ugarte upgrade

Much like it looked to be the beginning of the end for Ten Hag in 2024, the same was arguably true of Ugarte this summer, with the former Paris Saint-Germain man having been an unused substitute for the Europa League final defeat in May.

Subsequently given a dressing down by Amorim at Carrington, the defensive-minded midfielder has been bypassed by the ageing Casemiro this season, while failing to truly capitalise on the injury woes of Mainoo and Fernandes of late.

Indeed, United’s South American duo were particularly poor against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out, while Ugarte was especially off the pace in the loss at Villa Park not too long ago.

An upgrade is then just what Amorim is in need of, and Ederson could represent the perfect pick, having been hailed as a “monster” by journalist Ryan Taylor.

Part of the Atalanta side that swept to Europa League glory in 2024, the 26-year-old is a real all-round midfield asset, notably ranking in the top 14% of Serie A midfielders last season for interceptions per 90, as per FBref, while also ranking in the top 11% for progressive passes per 90.

For comparison, Ugarte did rank in the top 6% for tackles in the Premier League in 2024/25, highlighting his ball-winning prowess, although it is the other side of his game that is distinctly lacking, having ranked in just the bottom 18% for progressive carries.

It has, unfortunately, become a familiar sight seeing the United struggler turning into trouble or seeking the safe option when in possession, while his long ball accuracy is particularly erratic.

In essence, the £35m man has the same relentless work ethic as his fellow South American, but while also possessing quality on the ball too, providing Amorim with the best of both worlds in the centre of the park.

With INEOS having chased different priorities over the summer, it would almost be an act of negligence not to strengthen the midfield this month.

Celtic: Alex McLeish makes Bodo/Glimt claim

Pundit Alex McLeish has made a claim ahead of Celtic’s Europa Conference League second leg with Bodo/Glimt, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Hoops have it all to do…

Celtic were left stunned at Parkhead in the first leg of their Europa League Conference tie last week, with the Norwegian champions handing Ange Postecoglou’s side a first defeat of 2022 with a shock 3-1 win in Glasgow.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-22/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Bodo/Glimt are yet to begin their domestic season but scored early in each half to put the Hoops on the back foot. Daizen Maeda pulled a goal back late on, however, a deflected effort from Hugo Vetlesen regained a two-goal lead for Bodo/Glimt going into tonight’s second leg.

The Latest: McLeish’s comments

McLeish, who contributes for the BBC, was talking to Football Insider ahead of the second leg.

He said the first leg defeat was ‘really unexpected’ which left everybody ‘shocked’, adding that the Hoops ‘will be gutted’ if they fail to overturn a two-goal deficit.

“It was really unexpected. Everybody was shocked. I thought: ‘No way’. With the form Celtic are in, I just couldn’t believe it.

“It’s a shattering blow to your confidence when you have a competition where you’re expected to be going to the further rounds.

“This one would probably be a sore one. It could affect their domestic form as well just with the confidence factor.

“Unless they can disguise it by saying we are saving everything to win the Premiership. But I do not believe any team ever (would do that).

“People sometimes claim: ‘They were not really thinking about it. Their head was not in it.’ I just do not believe that for one moment.

“They will be gutted if they go out of the competition.”

The Verdict: Ange to go all-out?

Postecoglou may well make numerous changes from the side last Thursday, and you’d expect he’d be open to an all-out attacking approach looking for an early breakthrough.

Celtic have nothing to lose this evening, and following Giorgos Giakoumakis’ hat-trick on Sunday against Dundee, he may well come into the side from the off.

Reo Hatate also started on the bench in the first leg, and with five goal contributions from midfield already, perhaps we could see the January arrival start as well.

Spurs: Conte drops Skipp injury update

Antonio Conte has dropped an injury update on Oliver Skipp ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League clash with Everton.

What’s been said?

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the Italian revealed that, despite previously suggesting that the midfielder should be in line for a return to action in mid-February, the 21-year-old remains unavailable for selection for the fixture against Everton this evening – as the England U21 international is still yet to recover from a groin injury.

The 52-year-old went on to state his belief that Spurs’ club doctors should publicly explain the reasoning behind Skipp’s continued absence, something which suggests he does not have a lot of faith in the Tottenham Hotspur medical staff.

Regarding Skipp’s injury, Conte said: “Oliver Skipp, it is a pity. In England, I think that sometimes you should have a [press] conference with the medical department. It is too easy for the doctors to work here because they don’t speak, they don’t explain what happens.

“Sometimes I think that could be good… if, in two weeks… to have a good press conference with the medical department to explain about the situation that they are trying to take care of their players. Skipp is not ready. He’s having this problem with groin pain. He is fighting. He could recover before but maybe something was wrong. And now we have to wait.”

Conte will be fuming

Considering just how important a part of Conte’s side Skipp has become since the manager’s arrival at Tottenham back in November, the news that the midfielder will once again be unavailable for selection this evening is sure to have left the Italian fuming.

Indeed, over his 18 Premier League appearances so far this season, the £18m-rated academy product has been in extremely fine form, making an average of 42.3 passes, 0.7 interceptions, 1.8 tackles, 0.4 clearances and winning 3.6 duels per game – with these returns seeing the 21-year-old average a SofaScore match rating of 6.81.

Furthermore, despite having missed Tottenham’s last seven fixtures due to his injury, the £24k-per-week dynamo has still been Conte’s joint 12th-most selected player since his appointment at the club last year.

As such, it is clear for all to see exactly why Conte is so frustrated with the continued absence of Skipp, as the youngster is very much a crucial part of the former Inter Milan manager’s first-team plans in North London – with the 21-year-old’s unavailability for the Everton clash, as well as potentially the Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion fixtures, sure to come as a huge blow to the 52-year-old.

Lampard must hold onto Kenny at Everton

Everton have a number of long term contracts coming to an end, with six permanent deals and two loan stays ending in June 2022.

Therefore, Frank Lampard will need to work with Farhad Moshiri to consider whether any of the players are worth keeping hold of this summer.

The club is currently in a vulnerable position in the Premier League and every decision counts towards their unstable future, with over half a billion pounds wasted already on making signings and getting nowhere by doing so, Moshiri is running out of room for error, as the side currently one point outside of the relegation zone.

One player that has taken the expiry of his contract seriously is Jonjoe Kenny, and despite his inconsistencies has shown he can be relied upon when the opportunity has presented itself for him to step up this season.

The right-back has been taking up the chances to play on the opposite side in the left-back position for Everton this season, with club legend Leighton Baines and recently appointed legendary left-back Ashley Cole in the coaching team, helping him to develop his game in the position and it has been paying off in his most recent performances.

Lampard is clearly becoming a fan of Kenny, after giving him as many appearances over the last month as Rafa Benitez gave him during his entire six months reign, and it’s no wonder when you look at his output in the FA Cup clash against Boreham Wood last week.

According to SofaScore, Kenny earned himself the highest rating on the pitch (8.3) which is no surprise with an assist on the opening goal of the victory in the second half. He also won seven out of nine duels, made a whopping 110 touches, three tackles, an interception, a clearance, and successfully completed 83 out of 93 of his passes.

The Toffees boss was full of praise for the £15k-per-week who has been previously hailed a “horror show” by podcasters at ASCOM, with Lampard giving his verdict on the defender before his outstanding performance in the FA Cup last week.

“He will give you everything, positionally he was great, in terms of holding his position, then jumping out and making tackles at the right time.” Lampard told Everton TV.

“Jonjoe is perfect for any game – but especially when we needed discipline and effort and toughness, and he showed those things. I was really pleased with him.”

With ACSOM’s quote in mind, it has been quite the turnaround for Kenny and him making it at Everton now is somewhat of a surprise.

Though, judging by his displays, it would now be no shock if Lampard doesn’t encourage the club to give the defender a new contract ahead of his expiry in June, as he clearly values the defender’s versatility and potential to grow into the team. The way that Kenny has responded to the former Chelsea boss’s coaching and revitalised himself speaks volumes and surely won’t go unrewarded.

Everton must rue missing out on Mitrovic

Everton have struggled to score this season, with strikers Richarlison, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Salomon Rondon netting just eight league goals between them – a disappointing return for a trio worth a combined £93.6m according to Transfermarkt.

The Goodison Park faithful have been crying out for one of their strikers to take responsibility upon themselves and become more clinical in front of goal, with the team lingering just above the relegation zone and Championship football next season a real possibility.

One player they most likely won’t face next year in the event of relegation is Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has just broken the record for goals scored in a single Championship season with 14 games still to go, as his club Fulham look like they will be heading back to the Premier League for next season.

However, the clinical Serbian may not have had the chance to break the record, had Everton followed through with their interest in him back in 2019 and completed a transfer, but now there is no chance of such a deal happening for the £16.2m-rated striker.

The idea of a partnership between him and Calvert-Lewin would surely leave Toffees fans drooling due to the 27-year-old’s exceptional development as a player and recent form, earning the highest average match rating in the second tier this season so far with 7.71.

With 35 goals in 33 Championship games, the striker has also missed 18 big chances, which shows how often he gets into good positions and creates space for himself. He has also demonstrated a creative side to his game, contributing seven assists during the campaign and making one key pass per match.

Mitrovic, who was branded an “animal” by his former Fulham boss Scott Parker, has also put any concerns over his attitude behind him, earning him the captain’s armband on a number of occasions for club and country.

His ruthless aggression and strength make him almost impossible for defenders to handle, and former Everton striker Louis Saha has likened him to a “old-fashioned” centre-forward. That is understandable as Mitrovic is the type of player who will put the ball in the back of the net, as well as the defender, the goalkeeper and sometimes himself too.

Everton have lacked that type of determination in the final third to score any type of goal no matter how scrappy it may be and have suffered as a result, while Mitrovic has thrived and now looks ready to become a prolific striker in the Premier League too.

Right now, Toffees fans can only but wonder what it would have been like to witness him playing alongside Calvert-Lewin at Goodison Park, had they only gotten that prospective deal done three years ago.

Rangers: Scott Arfield was disappointing

Rangers came from behind to return to winnings ways on Sunday as they won 2-1 in the Premiership away from Ibrox.

The home side took the lead early on as a brilliant cross went over Allan McGregor’s head and was nodded into an empty net at the back post. Whilst the delivery in from the left was superb, the Gers shot-stopper will be disappointed that he was unable to either collect or clear the ball in the air.

They eventually found their equaliser just after the hour mark, after missing a penalty through James Tavernier in the first half, as Aaron Ramsey was on hand to tap the ball into an empty net after Kemar Roofe saw his header saved from close range.

Connor Goldson then completed the turnaround as he finished on the volley after a deflection in the box in the 86th minute.

Although they picked up the three points in the end, a few players let themselves and the team down with their individual performances. One player whose display must come as a warning sign to van Bronckhorst was midfielder Scott Arfield.

The Dutch head coach must stop handing him starts as he has been on a horrific run of form in all competitions, with zero goals and zero assists in his last nine games – averaging a dismal SofaScore rating of 6.56 in that time. He also has two goals and zero assists in his last 20 outings, illustrating how little he has been providing in the final third.

In this match, the dud was abysmal on and off the ball. As per SofaScore, he lost 75% of his individual duels as he made zero blocks, interceptions or tackles. This shows that he offered almost nothing out of possession as he failed to win the ball back for his side to cut out Dundee FC attacks and set the Gers on their way.

On the ball, he struggled to offer a threat to the opposition. Via SofaScore, he had fewer touches (27) than goalkeeper Allan McGregor (29) in the game as he failed to complete a single dribble or key pass and he came off at half time without taking a single shot.

He was deservedly hooked at the interval as he let the team down offensively and defensively, with Rangers losing 1-0 at the time of his departure from the match and winning 2-1 by the end of the game.

This latest showing, along with the eight previous matches heading into it, proves that he is not cut out to be a regular starter for Rangers in his current state. His form is off the boil and he must not start for the Gers again whilst playing at the standard he is at the moment.

McAvennie on ‘massive’ Furuhashi return

Kyogo Furhashi’s return to action will ‘rattle’ Celtic’s title rivals Rangers, Frank McAvennie has claimed.

The lowdown

Furuhashi sustained a hamstring injury in a Europa League group stage game against Real Betis in December and then aggravated it against St Johnstone on Boxing Day.

The 27-year-old has been out of action since, though The Athletic’s Kieran Devlin did reveal on Monday that he had resumed running at Celtic’s Lennoxtown training facility.

Devlin previously wrote that Furuhashi may be back ‘scampering about in the jersey’ after the international break, and he may be on schedule.

The Hoops are due to face the Gers twice in the space of a fortnight when the season resumes.

They travel to Ibrox on Sunday, 3 April before locking horns with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side once again in the Scottish Cup semifinal at Hampden Park on 17 April.

The latest

McAvennie says it will be a ‘brilliant’ boost for Ange Postecogolou when Furuhashi is available again.

And he thinks Rangers will be nervous about the impact the Japanese forward will have, particularly against their ‘far from solid’ defence.

“It still looks like he will be back for these games against Rangers and that is brilliant for us,” he told Football Insider.

“Just having him there will rattle Rangers a bit. They will know he’s ready, waiting on the bench for his moment.

“That will be a massive blow to that team because their defence has been far from solid recently.”

The verdict

In quotes that will offer further encouragement, the player himself told Celtic supporters this week that he was feeling ‘very good’ and would be back in action ‘soon’.

Furuhashi is the team’s top scorer with 13 goals even though he hasn’t kicked a ball in 2022, so his impact on the side is clearly massive.

If indeed he is able to feature in some capacity against Rangers, he’ll be hoping to make amends for his miss at Ibrox in August. Furuhashi was set through one-on-one with Gers keeper Robbie McCrorie but spurned his chance to equalise, and Rangers eventually won the match 1-0.

Leeds target Brennan Johnson impresses for Nottingham Forest

Leeds have recently been linked with Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson, and his performance against Blackpool this weekend will certainly have caught Victor Orta’s eye.

This forms part of our Transfer Watch series, where we react to a performance from a current transfer target.

The Lowdown: Orta confirms talks

The Whites are keen on signing the Wales international in the summer, with Johnson in no rush to extend his current Forest contract. [Football Insider]

Leeds chief Orta confirmed in the week that he tried to bring Johnson to the club when he was just 16 years of age. He still appears to be on the club’s radar ahead of Jesse Marsch’s first full season in charge and once again starred for Steve Cooper on the weekend.

The Latest: Impressive display

Forest put in an impressive display at Bloomfield Road on Saturday lunchtime, with Johnson the star of the show, scoring twice and registering an assist in a 4-1 win.

He recorded a remarkable SofaScore match rating of 9.1/10 in his 66-minute display and also registered two key passes and completed two dribbles.

Johnson even contributed defensively by making a clearance and an interception as Forest continued their push for a Championship play-off place.

The Verdict: Sign

You’d expect that Johnson’s display would have caught Orta’s eye, and should Forest remain in the second tier, a move for the attacker this summer should be a no brainer.

Johnson has played all across the attacking line this season, contributing to 20 goals in all competitions. His versatility and breakthrough campaign at the City Ground has been impressive, and with Raphinha heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, Johnson could be the next gem signed by Orta.

Leeds’ squad could also do with bolstering even if Raphinha stays, so bringing in Johnson could be an extremely shrewd move, providing Forest fall short in their bid to reach the Premier League.

In other news: Leeds may now lose another star alongside Raphinha and Phillips; he stunned a club employee.

Rangers dealt another Old Firm setback

Rangers have arguably their biggest Premiership game of the season ahead of them tomorrow as the latest Old Firm derby is set to take place at Ibrox.

As things stand, the Gers are currently three points behind their Glasgow arch-rivals at the top of the league table, making victory imperative if they are to strengthen their hopes of retaining the title.

The Ibrox outfit were dealt an injury blow after Giovanni van Bronckhorst revealed that they will be without Alfredo Morelos for the next few weeks as a result of a thigh injury he picked up while on international duty with Colombia.

In addition to this direct blow, it seems as though the Dutchman and his side have been dealt another big setback ahead of tomorrow’s clash.

However, rather than it being an injury issue with one of their players, it seems to be the fitness of one of Celtic’s key players which could land a blow on Rangers’ chances of securing a much-needed victory.

What’s the news?

After being out of action since December with a hamstring injury, Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi will be available to feature in Sunday’s clash according to Ange Postecoglou.

Taking into account how the Japan international has scored 16 goals and provided five assists in 26 appearances for the Hoops since his arrival from Vissel Kobe last stummer, it’s safe to say that the attacker has been a solid addition to Celtic’s ranks and a real attacking threat for them, much to the annoyance of Rangers fans.

Also, to further highlight the 27-year-old’s attacking talent, he currently has the third-highest shot-on-target average (54.8%) out of any player in the Premiership this season, showing how deadly he is in front of goal.

Therefore, having him back available for selection will surely be a massive boost for the Hoops and a big blow for the Gers, especially if he is able to get on the pitch and on the scoresheet.

Moving forward, Rangers will have to accept this bad news and make sure they do enough to snuff out the Japanese forward and Celtic’s other attacking players to make sure their arch-rivals don’t open a six-point gap at the top of the table.

Spurs could sign £69m Semenyo alternative who wanted to join in the summer

Tottenham Hotspur look as though they will be active once again this winter, that’s despite splashing over £100m on new additions during the summer.

Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons both made the move to North London during the summer window, but have both had to bide their time to make a positive impact under Thomas Frank.

The pair have been able to net just three Premier League goals between them to date, undoubtedly contributing to the currently lowly standing in England’s top-flight.

Undoubtedly, the pair will need time to settle into the plans of the Dane, but ultimately, the 52-year-old will want added reinforcements to save his job after the worrying start.

As a result, the hierarchy have been exploring potential options ahead of the January window, which could lead to numerous moves for multiple top-level attackers.

Spurs want move for top-level Premier League talent

Antoine Semenyo has been the name on every Spurs fan’s lips over the last couple of months, but it appears the Ghanaian international won’t be joining Frank’s side this January.

He was seen as one of the Lilywhites’ main targets ahead of the winter window, but the player himself has said he wouldn’t be keen on a switch to North London.

Manchester United and Manchester City now both look set to battle it out for his signature, which could help the Lilywhites in the pursuit of their latest target this winter.

After chasing his signature in the summer transfer window, Frank’s men look set to ignite their interest in landing City star Savinho after attempting to land the Brazilian during the off-season.

According to TEAMtalk, the 21-year-old could be allowed to depart the Etihad this window, especially if a move for Semenyo materialises over the next couple of weeks.

Reporter Dean Jones told the publication: “They want new attacking edge but they know they also need a back-up list of options. Savinho is one player who is part of that. The feeling is he might be more attainable than the others, but the problem will be finding a price-point that is agreeable to Manchester City.”

Amid claims in the summer that he could cost around £69m, it was suggested that the player was actually ‘keen’ on heading to north London, so watch this space.

Why Savinho would be the perfect Semenyo alternative

Missing out on key targets has been a recurring theme for Spurs over the last couple of months, with the summer window one that was full of failed additions.

Morgan Gibbs-White was seen as the club’s number one for the attacking midfield position, but they missed out on his signature after he penned a new deal at the City Ground.

Eberechi Eze was a player who was pursued after the Forest star agreed his new deal, but unfortunately for the Lilywhites, they also missed out on his signature.

He subsequently joined North London rivals Arsenal for a reported £60m fee and scored a hat-trick for Mikel Arteta’s men in the triumph at the Emirates back in November.

The fans will be hoping the same doesn’t happen this window, with any potential move for Savinho finally getting completed and avoiding letting another player slip through their grasp.

Whilst Semenyo would still likely remain as many of the fans’ first choice for the role, the Brazilian has all the tools to be the perfect alternative in the winter window.

His stats from the Premier League this campaign showcase his impressive form under Pep Guardiola, with the youngster potentially being an excellent pick up for Frank’s men.

Savinho, who’s been dubbed “exceptional” by one analyst, has only registered one assist in the league to date, but it’s his underlying figures that showcase his talent in 2025/26.

Other numbers, such as 1.1 shots on target and a 24% cross success rate, demonstrate his final product in the final third, which could make him the perfect answer to the current attacking issues.

Semenyo looks to be the latest player to slip through the Spurs net, but the hierarchy must ensure that same doesn’t happen with Savinho in the upcoming window.

It’s unclear how much a deal for the City sensation would cost this winter, but it’s evident that he would be the perfect alternative after missing out on the Ghanaian’s signature.
