The teenager, who is the son of Red Devils' technical director Darren Fletcher, was promoted by Ten Hag to train with the first team ahead of their Champions League clash with Galatasaray on Wednesday – a game they drew 3-3.

Now, the Sun claims the Dutch manager is keen to 'fast-track' Fletcher's progress, is likely to go out on loan next season, and that he has a 'massive' future at United after watching him for several months.

Jack joined United from rivals Manchester City earlier this year to link up with twin brother Tyler. While Jack was not selected as part of the travelling party to Istanbul, he was the only under-18 representative to be involved in the first-team training session. There may be another young Fletcher going onto be a hit at United in the future.

Jack's father, Darren, spent 20 years at United as a player, progressing through their academy to play 342 times for the first team. The former Scottish international also won nine major trophies at the club, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. He also won the Community Shield on four occasions.

WHAT NEXT?

United are back in Premier League action on Saturday when they travel to Newcastle United in a battle between the sixth-placed Red Devils and the seventh-positioned Magpies.

Brenden Aaronson is joining the most interesting club in Europe! How USMNT star will fit in at Union Berlin

After suffering Premier League relegation at Elland Road, the midfielder has the perfect platform to recover in the Bundesliga

Last season, Brenden Aaronson waded through a field of manure, but he's come out of the other side smelling of roses. While his Leeds team-mates prepare for a season in the Championship following their relegation, Aaronson will be competing at European football's top table.

The United States men's national team star has completed a loan switch to Union Berlin, and, owing to their incredible fourth-place finish last campaign, the minnows will be involved in the 2023-24 Champions League group stages.

Union's ascension to the grandest stage of them all would have seemed ludicrous just a few short years ago. But rise they have, thanks in part to a feverishly-devoted group of fans that refused to let the club die.

Aaronson is therefore joining an intriguing project in the German capital. It's also a move that makes sense, providing him with the platform to bounce back from a seriously difficult spell in England.

Getty ImagesScruffy underdogs

That Union Berlin have found themselves in a strong enough position to sign a player of Aaronson's profile is startling, considering they were playing in the fourth tier of German football as recently as 2006. These fluctuating fortunes neatly sum up the Iron Ones' history as a whole. The current iteration of the club was formed in 1965, though their lineage can be traced significantly further back than that.

Located on the East side of the Berlin Wall, they were hardly a powerhouse in the German Democratic Republic, a fact made all the more jarring by their splinter team, that formed in West Germany after the Soviets banned the club from all-German competitions, enjoying significant success. The 10 successive league titles won by local rivals Berlin FC Dynamo – who had links to the secret police – similarly acted to strengthen Union's status as scruffy underdogs.

Being 'outsiders', if not entirely anti-establishment, is another key aspect of their identity. The dominance of Berlin FC made it easy for supporters to embrace this image, as did their ramshackle stadium, the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei.

"When I started going in 1973, the stadium hadn’t been expanded yet, so the fans were packed in tight and the atmosphere was really one of a kind," one fan recalled in a illuminating piece for in 2018.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesOvertly counter-cultural?

During the late 1970s, Union's reputation as a 'safe' haven for those in opposition to the GDR regime blossomed. Although there remained a degree of restraint, there was a growing tide of shrouded dissent at matches in this period.

A personal favourite of some supporters was chanting 'The Wall has to go' whenever a team had a free-kick in a dangerous position. There is also claims that shouts of 'Stasi Out!' and 'Sh*t Dynamo' were aired on the terraces.

Perhaps the most open defiance to the status quo was Union fans' friendship with Hertha Berlin. The two clubs were based on opposite sides of the Berlin Wall, but Hertha fans would travel to games when their own team was playing away, singing provocative songs en route to the stadium which claimed that two sets of supporters 'belonged together'.

The above led to the authorities monitoring sections of the Union support closely. Police records show that those of the red side of the Berlin derby were also more likely to be punished than their FC Berlin counterparts if there was ever crowd trouble – which there frequently was.

Despite all this, there are limits to Union's reputation as counter-culture hell raisers, according to several who were there. “The great majority of Union supporters were just normal fans. By the end of the 1980s, many people had had it up to here [with the GDR] and came to Union games to get their unhappiness off their chest," long-time fan Theo Koerner has recalled. "Union fans were always quick, but you shouldn’t make resistance fighters out of them. Provocation is a part of football and people yelled out whatever they knew they could get away with without too much trouble."

Getty ImagesFighting to survive

Following the reunification of Germany in the early 1990s, many GDR-based clubs found it extremely difficult to sustain themselves. Union were no different. Lumbered with a stadium that was in dire need of improvement and an unsavoury minority of far-right supporters, they seemed a million miles away from reaching the Bundesliga, let alone the Champions League.

Fumbling around in the third tier, a solution was eventually found for their infrastructure problems, with supporters reaching into their own pockets to fund the stadium redevelopment.

It was not the first time that Union fans had shown ingenuity to keep the club afloat. During a particularly worrying period, supporters would give their ticket money to shady go-betweens in the forest surrounding the stadium. This helped keep the revenue away from their creditors who were crawling all over the books, with the money instead being used to make much-needed improvements around the club.

A miraculous rise to the top

Following decades of perilous instability, Union finally got themselves on an even keel in the 2000s. In 2006, they won promotion back to the third tier, but they were not there for long.

After finishing 12th and fourth, they romped to the 3.Liga title in 2009, with club legend Karim Benyamina netting 16 goals. His No.22 jersey was retired in 2011 and will only be worn again if someone is able to break his all-time scoring record.

Union had little trouble establishing themselves in the 2.Bundesliga following promotion, recording a string of mid-table finishes before flirting with promotion during the 2016-17 campaign. Although they eventually fell short, just two years later they would secure Bundesliga status, finishing third before beating fallen giants Stuttgart on away goals in a dramatic relegation play-off.

After the full-time whistle sounded, the pitch was flooded by Union supporters. It felt like things could not get any better. In fact, it was only the start.

Chelsea STILL can't score a goal! Five potential solutions for the Blues as their woes continue under Mauricio Pochettino

The Blues have found the net just five times in four games this season, with echoes of the goal-scoring woes that plagued them throughout 2022-23

There was an alarming sense of deja vu at Stamford Bridge during and after Chelsea's woeful home defeat to Nottingham Forest before the international break; confronted by an inferior opponent and dominating the ball, the Blues were bereft of creativity and blunt in attack. Their profligacy was encapsulated by an inexplicable and inexcusable miss by striker Nicolas Jackson, who ballooned the ball into row Z from all of four yards out with just seven minutes left on the clock.

Chelsea's struggles in front of goal became infamous throughout a nightmarish 2022-23 season. The campaign was characterised by agonising home losses to relatively weaker opposition, and failing to put the ball in the back of the net was as much to blame as a leaky defence.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino has a huge job on his hands to get the attacking formula right, with the pressure already mounting after two defeats in just four league games. GOAL assesses his options before domestic action resumes…

GettyTime for a change of shape

Pochettino has built his reputation on playing a fluid, attacking 4-2-3-1 formation throughout his managerial career to date, but since arriving at Chelsea he has discarded that shape in favour of a defensive 3-4-2-1.

Although this Chelsea squad will have grown accustomed to playing three at the back under the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, it's a decision that has almost certainly been motivated by an untimely pre-season knee injury to new signing Christopher Nkunku, who would have been earmarked for the No.10 role behind the striker in a 4-2-3-1.

It's already evident that the west Londoners are sorely missing the Frenchman, who was a goal-contribution machine in his time with RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, but the £42.5 million ($53m) capture of Cole Palmer from Manchester City represents a more-than adequate mitigation.

He looked sharp on his debut floating about between the lines, suggesting a change of shape to a 4-2-3-1 with him in the hole could help to unlock the Chelsea attack.

AdvertisementGettyLess caution in the midfield

A defensive set-up and a lack of creativity from the midfield has been a big part of the problem for the Blues, with Pochettino most recently opting to deploy Enzo Fernandez alongside £115m ($143m) signing Moises Caicedo and Conor Gallagher – none of whom are known for their attacking output.

Enzo has started the season in fine form, but he is perhaps better suited to the role of the midfield orchestrator in Pochettino's fluid system, ahead of a defensive midfielder like Caicedo and behind a would-be goal-scoring No.10 such as Palmer.

A change of personnel would lend itself to that new formation, with Gallagher – who has toiled during Chelsea's early-season struggles – dropping to the bench.

GettyOnus on the wingers

Chelsea rely heavily on their wide players to supply goals and assists, but only Raheem Sterling has looked anything close to his best since the start of the new campaign. Carney Chukwuemeka was getting better with every game, but a knee injury of his own has ruled him out of contention.

Pochettino will require and demand more, then, of both Noni Madueke and Mykhailo Mudryk – both of whom have made somewhat understated starts to the season. The former has been eased back in after a busy but successful summer with England at the Under-21 Euros, while Mudryk still looks bereft of confidence in competitive action despite an encouraging pre-season during which he finally registered his first goal.

The best course of action may be to launch them into the deep end and let them play their way into form. Chukwuemeka's injury has freed up space on the left-wing, and a formational tweak could be what it takes to get the best out of the pair of tricky wide men.

GettyArmando Broja's moment?

Another option for Pochettino is Chelsea's forgotten man: Armando Broja.

The young striker has returned to partial full training as he enters the final stages of his recovery from an ACL injury picked up during the World Cup break in late 2022, before which he was getting regular minutes under Tuchel and Potter.

Although he wasn't prolific in that brief period in and around the first-team, Broja should feel like a new signing when he eventually makes his comeback, and he provides much-needed depth and competition behind Jackson.

The academy product showed that he can cut it in the Premier League on loan at Southampton in 2021-22, and if he can build some confidence and momentum he could become a very useful weapon.

Speaking recently, Pochettino said of the striker: "He’s close but sometimes you are close but still the last step is always difficult after the injury that he suffered. He is training well, we have hope also."

A Robert Taylor corner kick saw the ball fly to the far-post, where Borgelin was waiting to smash home. It was the 22-year-old's first goal of preseason, and an impressive moment after Newell's defense had held strong through the first 63 minutes of the match.

Borgelin's header was one of few bright spots for the Herons Thursday evening. The 22-year-old Haitian striker scored just three minutes after coming onto the pitch. However, the brilliant strike off the six-foot-five head of the youngster doesn't quite fit the narrative that fans hoped to see Thursday.

The Herons have had a tough preseason, winning just one of six matches heading into their friendly against Newell's Thursday evening. Fans have been disappointed by performances, and the general morale surrounding the star-studded club seems to be low. Inter Miami's lone victory came against Hong Kong Team – a match where both Messi and Suarez did not play. Bellingham's big decision: Man Utd, Liverpool, City and Chelsea all desperate to sign Dortmund's £100m man

Jude Bellingham is set to leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season. A bidding war is inevitable.

Jude Bellingham can take his pick of clubs next season. It is as straightforward as that for the 19-year-old with the world at his feet and the giants of his game banging at his door.

Manchester United love him, Liverpool want him to inject youth and sparkle into an ageing midfield, while Manchester City know they are likely to have to replace at least one of Bernardo Silva or Ilkay Gundogan next summer.

Chelsea, too, are long-term admirers and have shown under their new owners that they're not afraid to splash the cash.

Bellingham, then, is quite simply the player every top Premier League club is prepared to battle it out for when he likely leaves Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season.

But who's going to sign the most in-demand young player in world football? GOAL analyses what the future holds for Bellingham…

Getty ImagesBellingham knows his worth

First things first, there is no guarantee the teenager from Stourbridge will even opt for a homecoming just yet. After all, he already resisted the overtures of Sir Alex Ferguson, Bryan Robson and Eric Cantona when United threw everything they had at trying to tempt him away from Birmingham in 2020.

Bellingham knows his worth, knows his own mind – and has the assuredness of someone much older than his tender years to follow his own path.

Dortmund, he decided, was a better environment to develop his prodigious talents than Old Trafford.

Erling Haaland thought likewise when being courted by United at around the same time – and it didn’t turn out too badly for him.

So, like Haaland, Bellingham is set to be at the centre of an almighty transfer scramble when he leaves Dortmund – but don’t rule out Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona or Paris Saint-Germain, if he concludes that a return to England is not the right move for him.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesReady for the next step

Something that does seem certain is that he will be ready for the next step come the end of the season.

He gave a tantalising glimpse of his qualities in Dortmund's Champions League defeat to City earlier this month, scoring at the Etihad and imposing himself on Pep Guardiola’s star-studded team.

He feels like the man to take England to the next level ahead of the World Cup, with Gareth Southgate facing scrutiny during this international window over how he handles the midfielder.

Indeed, there are growing concerns that the manager's conservative tactics are stifling Bellingham's immense talent.

GettyThe future of England

Bellingham’s versatility is a strength and has allowed Southgate to keep him involved over the past 18 months – but he needs to be given a defined role in the team.

A midfield three with Declan Rice and Phil Foden would breathe life into an area of the pitch where England too often look short of inspiration – but would the risk-averse Southgate really veer so far away from the extra protection added by a Jordan Henderson or Kalvin Phillips?

Mason Mount instead of Foden might provide more of a half-way house – but the Chelsea player’s best performances have come in a more attacking role for club and country.

The feeling is that Bellingham is the future of England and that the midfield now needs to be built around Bellingham but, as once again underlined in last week's 1-0 loss to Italy, which relegated the Three Lions from the top tier of the Nations League, there are significant doubts over whether Southgate is capable of getting the very best out of the nation's best attacking talents.

GettyQatar calling

Still, there is a growing clamour for Bellingham and Rice to make up two thirds of any England midfield at the World Cup. How Southgate chooses to supplement them is, of course, up to him. It's a decision that will likely define both England's tournament and, by consequence, the manager's legacy.

What's clear, though, is that if Bellingham shines in Qatar, Dortmund can effectively name their price for their most valuable asset.

He is already considered a potential era-defining talent. If he were to leave his mark on the 2022 World Cup, Bellingham will likely be a £100 million ($110m) player by this time next year, which narrows the field of potential destinations significantly…

'I want to be contagious' – Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez on the LA Galaxy's struggles, what everyone can learn and why he believes his team's story is still being written

The Mexican star sat down with GOAL to discuss his team's season, why he still has hope and what he wants to see from the next generation.

One of the phrases most associated with Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez is "imaginemos cosas chingonas", or "imagine beautiful things". It's his outlook on life. Even when things get ugly, you can always imagine something beautiful. You can always work towards something better.

This season, it's been hard to find much beauty about the LA Galaxy, and Chicharito is quick to admit it. This campaign has arguably been the darkest in the club's history, and it's not even halfway over.

But, true to character, Chicharito is imagining beautiful things. Somehow, despite the club's struggles, he sees a way out. He's still imagining this team lifting a trophy at the end of it. What a story that would be, he says.

The LA Galaxy star, though, is a realist. It'll take a lot of work and a lot of change to get there. What the club has done so far hasn't worked, but Chicharito isn't giving up hope.

As he gears up for a busy summer with his club, Chicharito sat down with GOAL to discuss his hopes for the LA Galaxy, why he's still imagining beautiful things, the rise of his teammate Riqui Puig and why he never wants to stop learning.

Getty ImagesA tough start to the season

Chicharito is the first to admit that this season has been rocky, and he's also the first to admit that it really, really bothers him.

As things stand, the Galaxy sit bottom of the Western Conference, although they do have games in hand. They also head into the summer facing a transfer ban, meaning that there will be no reinforcements coming in to elevate this team.

No matter what the scenario, that's inexcusable for a club the size of this. There's really no precedent for how bad the Galaxy have been this season. This is a team that was once the marquee team in MLS; now, based on recent history, they're no longer the marquee team in their own city.

It all came to a head recently when the club finally moved on from president Chris Klein amid fan backlash. The atmosphere in Carson has grown somewhat toxic, as fans, players, coaches and executives all look to lift this team out of the Western Conference's basement.

"It's about trusting, man," the Mexican star says. "Just trusting, because, look, I've always said it: when you are playing pretty well, when everything looks positive, you feel that everything is clicking, you feel that you're putting into practice all of the beliefs and everything that you say or you preach, but now, when you don't have complete certainty, now that it doesn't feel very good, now when even the results are not coming, now is when you need to practice it even more.

"The trust, the belief, the sticking together. Sticking together is not just saying all of this; sticking together is like trusting in that process, trusting in your teammates first, in the whole organization because, to be honest, it's not a matter of putting in the work, it's not a matter that this organization is not putting the work or giving everything."

He continued: "It's just simple: we need to believe, we need to be more accountable, we need to take more seriously every moment, every opportunity. Speaking as players, and I'm the first one, I'll come here with you and other people speaking about it.

"I'm the first one trying to do it because for me, I told my teammates in recent meetings that we did because we want to overcome all of this, like 'Guys, the last two years, they were great, they were amazing, and you can even, say, I scored plenty of goals, you could even debate if I was one of the best players of the team, but that wasn't enough! We didn't get the trophies. It's not about me being the best just for getting the praise for me; I want to be the best so I can help you be the best'."

AdvertisementGettyImagining beautiful things, but not daydreaming

Chicharito is the team's Designated Player, the team's star, the team's top goalscorer. Any Galaxy revival will have to start with him and, when asked about the team's season so far, the Mexican star is guaranteeing that there will be a revival.

It's tough to imagine now, for sure, and he admits that, for some, it will feel like he's being too optimistic. But, in a league as crazy as MLS, he does have a point: anything can happen over the next few months. It may be ugly in Los Angeles now, but who knows what will come next?

"I want to continue to be contagious with everyone," he begins, "because we deserve to be champions, but for that, we need to take this adversity and transform it, man. That's an opportunity. That's the beauty of writing a story. Imagine if we finish, I won't even say a treble, but the double, you know? Imagine we win the U.S. Open Cup and then we go to the playoffs and you never know! In the playoffs, you never know!

"That's how we we finished last season as well, when we had a very good streak of 12 games with just one loss, four draws, and I think the rest were wins, so we're still that in these competitions but, as well, we are realistic that the results haven't happened in the way that we want. Right now, we are in the bottom of the of the conference. We are not like just daydreaming over here. We're going to put the work for the results. That's going to happen and we are seven points away from the playoff spots, and to get to the championship, we need to get in playoffs.

"Of course, we would love to be the top seed of the conference, obviously, but right now, it seems very difficult, but we're gonna get as high as we can for sure. And if we get into the playoffs, man, we're gonna be one of the most dangerous teams, for sure."

For Chicharito's lofty goals to become a reality, the Galaxy will need just about everything to go right, which seems like a big ask considering, so far, just about everything has gone wrong.

Chicharito himself missed the start of the season due to injury and was not available for the club's recent 3-2 win over Real Salt Lake due to a red card suspension. Douglas Costa has, largely, been a non-factor. The lineup has been inconsistent due to some of those injury issues, with Greg Vanney unable to really crack the code of what has gone wrong.

"We haven't had a full team for three months, man," he says. "We haven't played like the starting XI that Greg is going to choose for five games in a row. We haven't so far and it's June, you know? That's a fact. Does that that affect us? Of course, but we're not going to stay the victim and we're just going to give excuses. We're going to overcome all of that."

GettySuperstar Riqui Puig

While Chicharito may remain the face of the Galaxy, there is another player alongside him that certainly has the quality to be among the best in MLS.

Riqui Puig has made headlines in recent weeks, having earned the ire of Giorgio Chiellini for a recent Lionel Messi-inspired celebration. The Italian icon called Puig "payaso", or clown, but there's nothing funny about how good the ex-Barcelona man can be on his day.

The young midfielder was once a star at La Masia, but, with playing time tough to come by in Barcelona, Puig arrived in Los Angeles last year looking for a fresh start. And, despite the Galaxy's struggles, he's shown glimpses of the star he can be.

Chicharito, who has at times taken Puig under his wing, has nothing but rave reviews for his teammate, a player he believes has unbelievable potential.

"I think he is one of the most talented players in this continent right now," Chicharito said. "He's so talented. I think living in LA is not that difficult to get used to because it's a great city and a great atmosphere and, over here, the club will treat you in a very warm way. I think I could speak for that and say he's very happy. He's enjoying it a lot."

He continued: "Riqui is an amazing teammate and amazing player. He's going to help us a lot."

The importance of learning

Youth soccer is still very much fragmented in the U.S., with the pay-for-play system still a key fixture in the American soccer landscape.

Because of that, there are many different schools of thought when it comes to developing talent. And, while Chicharito is no expert in youth development, he has seen enough to have some ideas.

For him, the most important thing for any player to have is hunger and a desire to learn. As someone that has reached the highest levels of this sport, there's no point where you "beat" the game, he says. To truly succeed at a high level, you have to be willing to admit what you don't know.

One player that he says understood that was Julian Araujo, who signed with Barcelona in January after starring for the LA Galaxy as well as the U.S. men's national team and Mexico's national team. What impressed the striker most about his now-former teammate was his passion for learning, and he says that passion will take him a long way.

"Even though he has talent, even though he's a great player, and even though everyone can say that he will have very positive like outcomes in his profession, what he has is this true passion for learning, man," Chicharito said of Araujo. "I felt that, not only personally because it's not that he was talking every single time with me and asking me a lot of stuff, but he did and then he was doing that with everyone. He was always observing and always listening, being very humble to accept that, regardless of if he had a very good game, there's always something to keep learning.

"When you are very young, 20 years old, you're playing in MLS, the right back of this amazing club and you have an amazing game or you had, for example, an assist and a clean sheet, everyone is speaking about you and you go to the MLS All Star Game and everything. It's tough man to to keep learning."

Always the philosopher, Chicharito says that mindset is also one he applies to himself. Even at 35, he knows that it's vital to be introspective, on and off the field, if he wants to keep growing as a player and a person.

"I think that will be the most important thing, in my opinion, about the youth and about even myself nowadays," he says. "I think in life, you need to never stop. You need to be humble enough to know that you always can learn from anybody, whatever it is. You never can feel that you've already done it or you already made it, right? There's always something that you can learn."
