Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium is set to host a Test match after 35 years, when England tour India in November-December for a two-Test series. The change was prompted due to the unavailability of the Wankhede Stadium, the regular Test venue, which is undergoing renovation for the 2011 World Cup in the subcontinent. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) had discussions with the owners of the Brabourne Stadium, the Cricket Club of India (CCI), over the sharing of tickets and a three-year deal on hosting rights will be signed on June 18.”A formal agreement, for a period of three years till Wankhede is available to us again to host matches, is to be signed with the CCI on June 18 when our managing committee meets,” Dr PV Shetty, the joint secretary of the MCA, told . “The discussion part is over and the CCI authorities have agreed to keep 50% of the club house tickets to themselves and give the rest to us [MCA].”Incidentally, England were the last visiting team to play a Test at the Brabourne Stadium, back in 1973. A dispute over tickets between the MCA and the CCI led to the birth of the Wankhede Stadium nearby, which held its first Test in 1975. Brabourne hosted three one-day internationals between 1989 and 1995, before playing host to five ICC Champions Trophy games eleven years later. The last international match played there was a one-off Twenty20 international between India and Australia last year.

South Africa wrap up series with emphatic victory

Herschelle Gibbs scored an unbeaten century as South Africa crushed Sri Lanka by eight wickets to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in this five-match series at the De Beers Diamond Oval on Wednesday

Charlie Austin04-Dec-2002Herschelle Gibbs scored an unbeaten century as South Africa crushed Sri Lanka by eight wickets to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in this five-match series at the De Beers Diamond Oval on Wednesday.Sri Lanka had high hopes of leveling the series here after a resounding win in third game at Benoni but a combination of ill-fortune, electric fielding and sloppy batting now leaves them fighting for only pride in the final game on Friday.Sri Lanka threatened a competitive score after being asked to bat first, racing to 57 without loss after the first ten overs, but a freak run out sparked a dramatic top order collapse and they were bowled out for 184.Such a meager target was never likely to be sufficient on a flat batting surface, but new ball bowlers Chaminda Vaas and Pulasthi Gunaratne sent jitters through the South Africa top order with the early wickets of Andrew Hall (2) and Neil McKenzie (7),However, the experienced Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis quickly reasserted their authority over the visitors in a record unbroken 173 run partnership for the third wicket.Gibbs, who came into the game with three successive failures in the series, finally hit form after an awkward start, smashing a succession of boundaries, including a remarkable punch over mid-wicket to bring up his 11th one-day century. The right-handed opener finished with 108 from just 92 balls having hit 14 fours and three sixes.Kallis has had no such problems with his form coming into the game and he carried on where he left off at Benoni, cruising to his third half-century of the series, finishing unbeaten 64 from 83 balls having hit five fours and a six.Under pressure to take quick wickets, the discipline shown by Sri Lanka’s bowlers last Sunday evaporated and South Africa reached their target with an embarrassing 19.1 overs to spare. But it was the batsmen who shouldered most responsibility for the defeat, like they did at Wanderers and Centurion where they were bowled out for an unacceptable 140 and 128.They had started the day well enough with Marvan Atapattu playing gloriously against the new ball, driving through the covers on the up and cutting imperiously, as he raced to 39 from 46 balls. But his purple form was wasted by a lackadaisical piece of running, as the right-hander was adjudged to have not ground his bat or foot the crease by television umpire Brian Jerling after a cheeky backwards flick from wicket-keeper Mark Boucher. The Sri Lankans, who were seething immediately after the decision, will claim with some justification that there was too much doubt for Jerling to press the red light, but Atapattu was guilty of ignoring the basics as he failed to run in his bat properly after ambling back from a comfortable two.The incident changed the course of the game, visibly rattling the impulsive Sri Lankans, who hit the self-destruct button, losing four wickets for just seven runs.Kumar Sangakkara (1) pulled a Kallis long hop straight into the hands of square leg and Aravinda de Silva (0) followed his fine 71 in the last match with a duck as he top edged an attempted hook.An astonishing one-handed airbourne catch by McKenzie – playing his first game of the series – then accounted for Jayasuriya (27 from 33 balls) andMahela Jaywardene (9) was trapped lbw by Alan Donald to leave Sri Lanka on 97 for five.Russel Arnold produced provided some timely resistance with the Sri Lankan selectors set to finalise their squad for Australia on Saturday, scoring 50 from 88 balls, adding 34 for the seventh wicket with Hashan Tillakaratne. But the fight-back proved shortlived as Tillakaratne swung across the line against Pollock and was bowled. The rest of the tail were then blown away, although Gunaratne did add 29 for the last wicket with Arnold.Donald was the most successful bowler, taking three wickets for 18 runs from his allotted ten overs. Pollock also claimed a three-for.

Windass: Adama Traore would improve at Chelsea

Adama Traore would take his game to the next level by completing a move to Chelsea this summer, according to Dean Windass.

Traore has been linked with a move away from Wolverhampton Wanderers and a host of clubs are keeping tabs on the lightning-fast winger.

While Leeds United have expressed an interest and the Spain international could reunite with ex-Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo at Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea are also in the running to secure his services.

Traore, who switched to Molineux from Championship side Middlesbrough in August 2018, could be seeking a new challenge as Wolves enter a new era under former Benfica head coach Bruno Lage.

The 25-year-old scored just three goals in 41 appearances last season as Wolves finished 13th in the Premier League standings.

Windass, who also featured for Middlesbrough during his playing career, believes Traore should head to Stamford Bridge if the opportunity comes before the transfer window closes.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Windass said: “He would go to the next level because he would work with better players.

“If Wolves are asking for up to £70million for him, it would not surprise me one bit.

“The only reason why I’m saying he would be good enough to go to Chelsea is because of his pace. They would be able to develop his technical ability and he is not so strong on his left foot. He’s got to work hard on his weaker foot.

“If he signs for a club like Chelsea, with the coaching staff they’ve got and the players there, he’s going to automatically improve his game.”

AVFC: Fans react to Aaron Ramsey links

Aston Villa are ‘on pole’ to sign Aaron Ramsey this summer, according to Outlet Sportmediaset, via tuttomercatoweb and Birmingham Live.

And, as to be expected, a number of Villa supporters have been sharing their thoughts on the links on social media.

Villa have already signed Emiliano Buendia and Ashley Young this summer, with NSWE sensing a real opportunity to catch and leapfrog the likes of Arsenal, Everton and Tottenham with their off-field business.

Ramsey, who wants to leave Italy this summer, is one of the latest players to be linked with a move to Villa Park and isn’t in Juventus’ plans.

The Wales international, currently at Euro 2020, is thought to be on £187,000-a-week in Turin and has two years remaining on his deal.

Villa fans react

@AVFC_News shared the links to Ramsey on Twitter during Thursday, with their posts receiving plenty of interaction from Villa fans.

This is what some had to say on the rumours, with one questioning whether he could be next season’s Ross Barkley.

AVFC: Fans react to Jack Grealish update

Manchester City are close to signing Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish in a deal worth £100m, according to Jim White.

And, as to be expected, plenty of Villa fans have been giving their immediate thoughts to the news online.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been earmarked as the favourites to sign Grealish since March, and it appears as if a move is now edging closer.

Grealish is currently away with England at the European Championships but informed friends earlier this month he is very interested in an Etihad switch.

A £100m move, should it go through, would make the boyhood Villa fan the most expensive player in Premier League history, eclipsing Paul Pogba’s £94.5m move to Manchester United.

talkSPORT reporter White posted this on Twitter on Friday morning regarding City and Grealish.

“Close to completion – According to @talkSPORT sources, Jack Grealish close to joining @ManCity in £100m deal.”

Villa fans react

Fans of numerous clubs weighed in with their views on a possible deal, including some from Villa.

This is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply, with the majority understandably not happy.

Pundit labels Aston Villa signing Emiliano Buendia a gamble

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Championship midfielder David Norris believes Aston Villa spending £40m on Emiliano Buendia is a gamble.

Villa saw off competition from Arsenal to sign Buendia from Norwich City in a deal that is worth up to £40m, according to the MailOnline.

The Argentine was brilliant last season as Norwich went on to win the Championship title and promotion to the Premier League. He was absolutely devastating in attack, scoring 15 goals and racking up 16 assists for the Canaries.

With the Premier League being a different ball game, though, Norris thinks a club paying £40m for Buendia is quite a gamble.

“I mean, even though the figures are crazy these days, you still probably want a little bit of a guarantee that at least they’ve been there and done it and proven that he can [do it] in that league,” the ex-Leeds United player said.

“It’s still a big jump from Championship to Premier League, so 40 million for me, it’s a bit of a gamble I probably wouldn’t want to risk.”

It is a big decision by Dean Smith, but the Villa manager can obviously take confidence from the signing of Ollie Watkins.

Watkins joined the Villans from Brentford for big money in the last summer transfer window and had no trouble making that step up from the Championship to the Premier League. The England international scored 14 goals in 37 games, proving to be money well spent.

Tottenham ready to pay fee for Pellegrini

According to a report by Italian news outlet Calciomercato, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are ‘ready’ to pay the €30 million (£25.6m) release clause for Roma star Lorenzo Pellegrini.

The Lowdown: Italian job?

Since managing director Fabio Paratici was officially appointed by Tottenham, the club have been linked to a host of Serie A stars – including ones that are currently shining for Italy at Euro 2020.

Domenico Berardi, who has been a real threat and mainstay under Azzurri boss Roberto Mancini, is one of the names touted with a possible Spurs move this summer.

Manuel Locatelli is another, with the very promising 23-year-old dazzling for Italy on Wednesday evening in their 3-0 win group stage win over Switzerland.

The Latest: Tottenham ‘ready’ to pay for Pellegrini…

Now, as per a claim from Calciomercato, Tottenham are ‘ready’ to pay the £25.6m release clause in Pellegrini’s contract amid the player’s contract dispute at Roma.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-2/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, the 24-year-old is currently in talks over a new deal at the Stadio Olimpico, but the ‘agreement is missing’ and ‘struggling to be found’.

This has prompted the Lilywhites and Premier League rivals Liverpool to turn their heads, with both sides now ready to pay the fee needed.

The Verdict: Jack of all trades

An all-round central midfield player, Pellegrini is both a threat going forward and solid defensively going by the numbers.

The Italian dynamo averaged an impressive 2.1 shots per 90 in Serie A over 2020/2021 – which is even more than Son Heung-min managed in the Premier League at Tottenham (WhoScored).

Defensively, Pellegrini also made the same amount of interceptions per match domestically (1.3) as Tottenham midfield colossus Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (WhoScored).

This points to a very dynamic midfield presence in all areas, leaving little wonder why he has been called ‘phenomenal’ by Roma legend Francesco Totti (Basia.news).

Pellegrini would certainly feel like a top signing for Spurs, but given their more pressing need for a centre-half, we still believe he should be put into the maybe pile for now.

Anderson hints at future development of County Ground rather than relocation

Over recent years there has been an ongoing debate as to whether Somerset County Cricket Club should sell their town centre ground and relocate to a new out of town venue

Richard Walsh15-Jun-2002Over recent years there has been an ongoing debate as to whether Somerset County Cricket Club should sell their town centre ground and relocate to a new out of town venue. At the AGM in December last year the question was raised and points of view from both sides were voiced, since when there has been little public airing of the matter.During the last few months however, chief executive Peter Anderson has attended several meetings with the Taunton Deane planners and given evidence with a view to the future development of Taunton town centre and the clubs future role in it.Mr Anderson has now written about the latest situation regarding the matter in tomorrow’s programme notes for the NUL game at Bath between the Sabres and Leicester Foxes. The chief executive says: "The whole future of the County Ground revolves around what is planned for the development of Taunton and the club has put forward proposals which may pave the way for the retention of the County Ground in it’s present location."He continues: "Christopher Ondaatje (the club patron ) is very keen to assist the club to stay and has also suggested ways in which the club could expand on the edges of it’s current site."The Somerset boss concludes: "The club has a bright future if everything falls into place. We need, however, the team to do well on the field, which is the principle reason why you all support in the magnificent way you do."These new developments will be very good news to the large numbers of supporters who have expressed their reservations about leaving their traditional town centre home and relocating to new out of town site, and doubtless they will be watching any further developments on this matter closely.

Charnley stance on Newcastle takeover

A source has shared what Lee Charnley’s stance is on the Premier League and how they have dealt with the potential takeover of Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Arbitration looms

The arbitration case between the St. James’ Park faithful and the English top flight is seemingly not far away at all, as Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has reported that it is expected to start at the end of June.

Mike Ashley has also launched a separate anti-competition claim against the division over their decision-making process in the failed deal between him and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group, which he is keeping in his back pocket in case the results of the arbitration hearing do not go in his favour.

The Latest: Charnley’s stance

As per The Athletic, a source has shared that since the takeover bid has stalled, Charnley’s tone during meetings has sometimes been ‘negative’, adding that he ‘isn’t happy’ with how the PL behaved when they decided to fail the bid.

The source also claimed with regards to the failed deal that ‘that’s led to Newcastle almost protest-voting against things’, hence the two separate claims that they have launched against the Premier League.

The Verdict: Not surprising

It is not surprising at all to hear that Charnley is not happy with how the top flight have behaved with regards to the whole takeover saga.

He, like Ashley, is keen for the Tyneside club to be sold to the KSA consortium, but the decision-making of the top flight has left both them and the fans in limbo.

Nonetheless, he will be hoping for a positive result for the Magpies in the arbitration proceedings coming up, which should paint a much better picture over the direction the takeover is heading.

If the results are negative for the Toon, then at least they have the separate anti-competition lawsuit to fall back on, but Charnley will be hoping that this is not needed, and fans will be hoping to see the back of him too.

SPCL3 – Purbrook the team to watch

Purbrook look as though they could be the team to beat in Southern Electric Premier League Division 3 this season

Mike Vimpany22-May-2002Purbrook look as though they could be the team to beat in Southern Electric Premier League Division 3 this season.Emphatic wins over Hook & Newnham Basics (by 123 runs) and Havant II, by an 88-run margin, have given Purbrook a flying start in their bid to improve on consecutive fifth-placed finishes. They lead the Division 3 field by a single point from Hambledon and Waterlooville who, along with Alton and New Milton, have also emerged unscathed from the opening fortnight.Purbrook’s latest win – over Havant – was effectively sealed after less than a hour’s play.”They had 95 runs on the board in less than ten overs, by which time I had already used four bowlers,” revealed Havant 2nd XI captain Matt Gover, whose side have made a disappointing start.”Their South African, Tokkie Prozesky, is a bit special and strikes the ball awfully hard.”When the pitches harden up and the ball really starts coming on to the bat, he’ll make some very big scores,” Gover predicted.Prozesky hit 64 of Purbrook’s 95-1 and then sat back and watched as Mike Hennessy (39), Ian Hunter (35), John Iles (33) and latterly Andy Mengham (34) swept Purbrook to an unassailable 274-9.Former United Services all-rounder Craig Williams (4-48) and Wayne Musselwhite (3-39) bowled Havant into submission at 188 all out (Jon Owen 37).While Purbrook celebrated, title favourites St Cross Symondians tried in vain to fathom out how they contrived to let slip a potentially winning position – and yet lose to Portsmouth II at St Helen’s, Southsea.St Cross appeared to have their sights on a second consecutive win as Mark Parker (56) and Marc Rees (36) eased them to 89-0 and later 110-1 in response to Portsmouth’s 195-9.”With 26 overs left and St Cross needing only 86 runs to win and nine wickets left, we envisaged only one outcome,” explained Portsmouth secretary Chris Moon.”They were batting beautifully, but when Dean Olliffe got both their openers they completely lost their grip and, in the end, were 14 runs short at 181-6.”Local university student Mark Clarke, with 38 and a key spell of 2-33, had a major input into Portsmouth’s improbable success, while Matt Scott’s 37 included one six which landed on to the bonnet of Raj Maru’s now dented car !Hambledon, relegated from Division 2 last season, dusted up Bashley (Rydal) II by 119 runs – Mark le Clerq (51), Ian Turner (49) and Simon James (46) making hay in a formidable 253 all out.Neil Sexton (5-56) and John Marsh (4-43) toiled for Bashley, whose batting disintegrated to 134 all out against the combined spin of John Barrett (4-49) and Ian Turner (3-15).Waterlooville followed up a 44-run win at Hursley Park with a 24-run success at newly promoted Hartley Wintney, who have lost both their openers.Chris Baumann, the Queenslander who has taken on to Ville captaincy, played a lead role in his side’s success, scoring 76 and later taking 3-20.The Aussie shared a century opening stand with evergreen Ian Farley (48) before allowing Martin Shephard (46) and Alan Over (38) to push the Ville to 229-3.When Steve Sayers, who finished with 91 not out, and Matt Digweed (39) were together at 158-4, Hartley Wintney were a distinct threat. But with three later batsmen failing to score and Stan Rudder (3-22) coming back to finish things off, last year’s Hampshire League runners-up were dismissed for 205.Alton were delighted to record a three-wicket win at Paultons, who appeared to have matters under control after checking a middle-order collapse and then having the visitors on the rack.Paultons drew first blood with in-form Colin James (48) and Duncan Park providing a promising 67-run start. But John Halfacre (3-55), Julian Ballinger (2-37) and latterly Matt Ireson (4-25) got to work, reducing Paultons to 125-8, before former Wellow & Plaitford skipper John Robinson (34 not out) came to the rescue.Ireson, who missed all of last season, bowled an immaculate spell, getting appreciable spin from a helpful Whitmoor Lane surface.West Indian recruit Randy Davis (2-36), bowling quick and sometimes wide, had Alton rocking at 15-3.At 73-5, an Alton victory appeared unlikely, but Bruce Oliphant (43) rallied but was out at 111-6, leaving teenager Mark Heffernan (34 not out) – the youngest of the Irish triumvirate – to assume the hero role.Grant Hibberd, who has arrived from South Perth with Peter Anderson to supervise affairs at New Milton, has told his young charges “not to get carried away” after back-to-back wins over Ventnor and Hook & Newnham Basics.”We’ve got a young, pretty talented side here at Ashley and it’s important they remain focussed,” he said.Skipper Steve Watts (43) showed the youngsters how to adapt on a helpful Ashley surface, steering Milton to 139 all out. With Anderson taking 5-16 and fledglings Matt Freeman (3-20) and Ben Neal (2-21) sharing the spoils at the opposite end, Basics – minus influential captain Keith Lovelock – nose-dived to 88 all out.Eight sides emerged from the second round of matches with a “won one, lost one” record, among them Hursley Park, who dismissed Ventnor for 128 and won by seven wickets.Raman Prendergast, with 4-34 and 32 in a key 71-run start with John Harris (26), had a major influence on the outcome, as did newly acquired Australian Jason Marr (30 not out), who had been looking for a club since arriving from the Victorian outback with Easton’s Francis Gill.Another Australian, Nathan Collins (4-44) removed Leckford’s top four to set up a nervy two-run win for Gosport Borough, whose 172-8 (Stewart Magee 43) remained under threat whilst Mike Howard(50) remained at the crease.Steve Fox (4-28) and 17-year old Matt Truckle (2-50) had Flamingo’s flapping at 80-7 at Redlynch & Hale until Adie Heath (45) – a man for any crisis – and Kevin Brewster (40) righted the ship.Heath, who celebrated a career-best 5-16 return with the ball against Portsmouth II the previous week, showed off his batting prowess this time, adding 65 for the eighth wicket.Iain Soutar’s gutsy 55 eased Redlynch to 97-1, but Father Ted look-a-like Dave Wright (5-23) carved significant inroads into the villagers’ order before a three-wicket victory was achieved.
