‘Court has come down with a sledgehammer’

The Supreme Court of India has asked BCCI president N Srinivasan to step down as the first move towards a fair investigation of the IPL corruption saga. A two-judge bench of India’s top court, which made the observation, gave Srinivasan two days to take a decision before it resumes hearing the case on March 27.While the recommendation is not a direct order, Justice AK Patnaik was unambiguous: “Mr Srinivasan should step down or else we’ll be forced to pass an order.” He questioned Srinivasan’s position as BCCI president asking, “How did he stay on despite all the allegations? His staying on is nauseating for cricket.” The other judge on the bench, Justice Ibrahim Kalifulla, told the counsel: “If there has to be a fair and dispassionate enquiry, Mr. Srinivasan must step down.”The development – and the strong language used by the court – is believed to have caught the BCCI by surprise and thrown it into some disarray. While Srinivasan has refused to comment, three vice-presidents of the board have said there was no option but for him to comply with the court’s orders. A board meeting is likely to be convened on Wednesday, at which the BCCI’s response will be formalised. The hearing, the first case of the day to be taken up in Supreme Court’s Court No. 5, began with the BCCI lawyers stating that the Board agreed with the findings of the Mudgal panel report and asking the court to allow the BCCI to take its own actions in the light of panel recommendations. That was turned down by the court.A PTI report said that the court stated that while it could not divulge details of the sealed envelope given to them by the Mudgal panel, the BCCI’s lawyers were shown certain portions of the report. When the counsel, CA Sundaram, said “We have not seen the contents of the report in the sealed cover”, Justice Patnaik is believed to have summoned him to the bench and had him read a portion of the sealed envelope report.Justice Patnaik said: “Though there is no definite finding in the report in the sealed cover, the allegations are so serious they require further investigation, which the BCCI can’t do on its own and it has to be done by an outside agency. That’s why we are saying that Mr. Srinivasan must step down for a fair probe….In view of this, I need some answers, come back with an answer.”If N Srinivasan does not heed the court’s recommendation to step down, it will be ‘forced to pass an order’ on Thursday•AFP

In his early statements, Justice Patnaik questioned the wide divergence in the findings of the investigations conducted by the BCCI-appointed two-man probe panel and the Mudgal Committee panel. He wanted to know if the BCCI-appointed panel had been “managed.” The BCCI counsel’s reply was that the two-man BCCI panel did not have the “wherewithal” of the Mudgal panel, that the Mumbai and Delhi police investigations were under way and that the Mumbai police had refused to depose before their panel.Srinivasan would not comment on the issue saying he had not “read” the court’s recommendations. However Ravi Savant, a BCCI vice-president, said if the Supreme Court had issued a clear directive it would have to be followed. His words were echoed by Shivlal Yadav, who said he would be willing to take up any task he is given.Another BCCI vice-president said no one was prepared for this scenario. “No one knows what can be done now. The court is yet to pass the order. But it is now up to him (Srinivasan). The court has asked him to step down. Otherwise it will pass an order. It is not good for the BCCI,” the official said.”We know what has happened to Subrata Roy [the Sahara chief],” the official said. “He defied the court’s order and look where he is now.”The Supreme Court had appointed a three-member committee, headed by former High Court judge Mukul Mudgal and comprising additional solicitor general L Nageswara Rao and Assam Cricket Association member Nilay Dutta, in October 2013 to conduct an independent inquiry into the allegations of corruption against Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, Super Kings owner India Cements, and Rajasthan Royals team owner Jaipur IPL Cricket Private Ltd, as well as with the larger mandate of allegations around betting and spot-fixing in IPL matches and the involvement of players. The committee had submitted its findings to the court on February 10.

As a result of the win, T&T have now qualified for the semi-finals where they will face Guyana.CCC, choosing to bat, failed to produce even one significant partnership and lost wickets right from the off. Only three batsmen reached double figures, as Dwayne and Jason shared six scalps between them to dismiss the team for 98 in 44.2 overs. Both the bowlers ended with identical figures – 3 for 19 from their 10 overs- while Ravi Rampaul, Sunil Narine and Rayad Emrit chipped in with a wicket each.T&T made a bright start in their chase, as the openers Lendl Simmons and Evin Lewis forged a 65-run stand. The pair eventually fell in quick succession – Lewis for 44 and Simmons for 38 – but by then, the hosts’ second win of the tournament had all but been sealed.CCC, who are second in Group B, will only qualify if Leewards Islands beat Barbados in their final group game.

Two senior coaches resign from NCA

Two senior members of the National Cricket Academy’s coaching staff, batting coach Dinesh Nanavati and bowling coach Bharat Arun, have resigned, putting a question mark on the BCCI’s plans of restructuring the Bangalore institution.Nanavati and Arun were the latest in a string of recent departures from the NCA, which has been without a director since Sandeep Patil was appointed chairman of the national selectors last September. On May 1, the BCCI had terminated the services of six of its technical staff at NCA including bowling coach V Venkataram, fielding coach R Sridhar, assistant coach Satish Chimote, physiotherapist and strength and conditioning coaches VP Sudarsan, Nagendra Prasad and Anand Date.As a result, the NCA finds itself with just four full-time employees in its technical wing – Dr Kinjal Suratwala (head, sports science and coach education), strength and conditioning coach PV Sudarsan and physiotherapists Nitin Patel and Ashish Kaushik. Patel has been with the Indian team for a better part of the last year.In the absence of a director, NCA chairman Ranjib Biswal and Prof Ratnakar Shetty, the BCCI’s general manager, game development, had decided to reduce the academy’s operating costs by sacking the permanent staff and instead involved former cricketers in coaching. However, the situation is likely to impact the functioning of the academy in a big way if the board doesn’t find replacements soon. One source at the NCA said the director’s absence didn’t matter much since the academy’s workings had been streamlined but the two latest resignations would have an impact. So far, though, the downsizing at the NCA doesn’t seem to have affected the off-season camps. Sanjay Bangar, Deep Dasgupta and Sunil Joshi had conducted a camp for over-19s last month. Prior to that was an Under-25 camp in Mysore, conducted by Kiran More, Venkatesh Prasad, Mukund Parmar and Venkatapathy Raju, and an Under-19 camp in Bangalore with Narendra Hirwani, Debasis Mohanty and WV Raman. The timing of Nanavati’s and Arun’s resignations had given rise to speculation about the reasons but it appears they both parted company on good terms with the NCA. Nanavati, 64, has been a diabetic for a while and his sister was taking care of him in Bangalore. “Since she decided to move out of Bangalore, I felt it was better to be at home in Mumbai. So I resigned in May and was relieved at the end of the Under-19 camp on July 6,” Nanavati said.Though Arun, who resigned last week, couldn’t be reached for a comment, it appears that he resigned since he had a good offer from the TNCA in Chennai, where his family is based.

– Nunca temi (as críticas).

Essex strengthened their grip against Leicestershire at Chelmsford on day two. After centuries from Tom Westley and Jaik Mickleburgh lifted Essex to an imposing 434 for 3 declared, the visitors were reduced to 32 for 2 at the close.David Masters roared in to remove Greg Smith and Ned Eckersley as the visitors ended the day still 253 short of being asked to follow on.When Essex resumed on 161 without loss, Westley and Mickleburgh continued to find the gaps with relative ease without pressing the accelerator – the 200 was raised in the 67th over. It represented the first double-century opening stand for the county since Alastair Cook and Will Jefferson performed the feat in 2004 when Leicestershire were again on the receiving end.Shortly afterwards, Mickleburgh became the first batsman to move into three figures when he on-drove Michael Thornely to the long-on boundary to register his third century for the county. The milestone arrived from 195 balls and contained one six among Mickleburgh’s 13 boundaries.Westley was to celebrate his third ton for Essex with a quickly-taken single, an effort spanning 230 balls, 11 of which he despatched to the boundary. It was the first time two Essex openers had scored centuries in the same Championship innings since Cook and Jefferson put Leicestershire to the sword. The new ball was taken at 232 but it was a run-out 16 runs later that brought the visitors their first success of the match, Mickleburgh failing to regain his ground as Thornely threw down the stumps from short-cover after the batsman had been sent back. Mickleburgh’s innings of 126 was spread over 243 deliveries, including 14 fours and one six.Lunch was taken at 259 for 1, the morning session having produced 98 runs, and soon afterwards Westley’s fine effort was ended on 125 by medium-pacer Wayne White, who produced a delivery which kept low. Two deliveries later, rain arrived to cause an 80-minute hold-up and when play resumed Owais Shah and Mark Pettini saw Essex to 300 in the 98th over and a third batting point.Another stoppage after fewer than eight overs brought about an early tea at 308 for 2. When play did restart, Shah soon fell lbw to left-arm spinner Claude Henderson for 36, spread over 59 balls. The arrival of Ryan ten Doeschate brought about a welcome increase in the tempo. He quickly found the extra cover boundary and followed it with an off-driven six against Henderson to bring up the 350 in the 110th over. Another ten Doeschate six against the same bowler, this time an on-drive, inflicted further punishment on the toiling visiting attack.Pettini also scored freely enough to complete his half-century, containing five fours, from 60 balls before ten Doeschate’s third six against Henderson saw him to the milestone in 48 balls. The next landmark was the 100 partnership in 17 overs before the declaration arrived, with Pettini unbeaten on 72 from 89 balls. Ten Doeschate’s contribution to a stand of 120 was 63 in as many balls.Leicestershire were soon plunged into trouble when they replied. With only six runs on the board, Mickleburgh picked up a smart catch at short-leg to remove Smith and provide Masters with his first success against his former county. Two runs later, the fast bowler struck again as ten Doeschate held a catch above his head at short midwicket to remove Eckersley.

Moeen and Mitchell down Somerset

Moeen Ali and Daryl Mitchell were the stars of Worcestershire’s 54-run over Somerset in the Friends Life t20 clash at Taunton

01-Jul-2012
ScorecardMoeen Ali and Daryl Mitchell were the stars of Worcestershire’s 54-run over Somerset in the Friends Life t20 clash at Taunton.Moeen set the tone for his side’s 173 for 7, which included six penalty runs for a slow Somerset over-rate, with a rapid 47 after the hosts had won the toss. Phil Hughes contributed 41, while Alfonso Thomas was the pick of the visitors bowling attack with 1 for 24 from his four overs. Then Mitchell claimed 3 for 13 with his medium pace as Somerset’s batting fell apart from a promising 51 for 1 after six overs. They were eventually bowled out for 119 to suffer a second heavy defeat in as many games before another packed crowd. From looking to have a grip on the Midlands/Wales/West Division, Somerset are suddenly under pressure following a slump in form that began with Friday’s nine-wicket home defeat by arch-rivals Gloucestershire. Worcestershire have two games in hand and are now only a point behind their opponents. Their bowlers were far more effective on a slow pitch, with David Lucas and Brett D’Oliveira (3 for 20) backing Mitchell with economical spells.Richard Levi was the only home batsman to time the ball, hitting three fours and two sixes in his 27 before holing Mitchell out to Moeen at long-on. After that it was a sorry procession, with only Lewis Gregory (22) showing any semblance of form.Somerset’s new plan of opening the bowling with left-arm spinner George Dockrell failed to pay dividends as Moeen attacked from the outset and the total after one over was 14. The six Powerplay overs yielded 53 for Worcestershire and by the time the impressive Moeen was stumped advancing to Dockrell, having hit six fours and two sixes in facing 23 balls, the total was 73 for 1 in the eighth over.Vikram Solanki had made 33 at a run a ball before he was caught by James Hildreth at long-off – Dockrell again the bowler – and it was 127 for 3 when former Somerset player Gareth Andrew was taken by Nick Compton at long-on off Steve Kirby for 19.Hughes was dropped on 3 and 15 before going on to bolster the second half of the innings, hitting four fours in his 32-ball innings. From 153 for 3 in the 18th over, Worcestershire lost four late wickets, but were boosted by the bonus of the extra runs as the home side paid for bowling their overs too slowly.
