Bowlers propel Habib Bank into final

ScorecardHasan Raza’s unbeaten 42-ball 58 ensured Habib Bank posted a competitive total•Pakistan Cricket Board

A disciplined bowling effort from the Habib Bank Limited bowlers ensured they defended their 148-run target against Port Qasim Authority, winning the second semi-final by a margin of 14 runs in Karachi. Habib Bank will now play Pakistan International Airlines in the final of the Ramadan T20 Cup on July 25.Habib Bank chose to bat first, but their top order struggled against PQA’s new-ball attack as pacer Mohammad Talha snared three wickets within the first four overs of the match. Habib Bank were a precarious 47 for 5 in the 11th over before Hasan Raza and Humayun Farhat combined for a 46-run, sixth-wicket stand. Once Farhat fell for 22, Hussain came in and immediately began attacking PQA’s bowlers, hitting 30 off 16 balls. Hussain and Raza put on a further 41 runs before the innings closed at 148 for 7. Raza finished with an unbeaten 42-ball 58, with Talha taking three wickets for 29 runs.In reply, PQA’s chase looked to be on track at 53 for 1 before a flurry of wickets between the 9th and 13th overs reduced them to 75 for 5. Sarmad Anwar dismissed PQA’s top order to finish with 3 for 26. The constant pressure applied by the HBL bowlers made PQA’s batsmen run ragged, with the last two wickets falling to run-outs. In the end, the 149-run target looked too much for PQA, who eventually finished 14 runs short, at 134 for 9.

Warner hearing set for Thursday night

David Warner will face a disciplinary hearing on Thursday evening Australian time over his altercation with England batsman Joe Root at a Birmingham pub

Brydon Coverdale13-Jun-2013David Warner will face a disciplinary hearing on Thursday evening Australian time over his altercation with England batsman Joe Root at a Birmingham pub. Warner was stood down from the team for Australia’s washed out Champions Trophy match against New Zealand on Wednesday and will learn at the Code of Behaviour hearing whether he faces any further sanction over the incident, which took place in the early hours of Sunday morning. The hearing will take place via teleconference at 6.30pm AEST (9.30am in the UK) and it will be the second time in less than a month that a case involving Warner will be heard by Cricket Australia’s senior Code of Behaviour commissioner, Gordon Lewis. Warner was fined A$5750 in May after he pleaded guilty to unbecoming behaviour, concerning his foul-mouthed Twitter rant at two Australian journalists. This time, Warner has again been reported for “unbecoming behaviour”, relating to a punch he allegedly threw at Root while members of the England and Australia teams were at a Birmingham pub following their game on Saturday. There have been reports that the altercation was instigated by Warner’s belief that Root was impersonating Hashim Amla when wearing a false beard, but the England camp has said Root was making fun of himself and referring to taunts from his team-mates that he was too young to grow facial hair.George Bailey, the acting captain of Australia in the absence of the injured Michael Clarke, said after the New Zealand match that the Warner-Root altercation was “a very minor incident” which had “been dealt with in-house”.There have also been reports that Warner was a regular at the Walkabout pub, where the incident occurred, during the team’s time in Birmingham. “Our bar staff are quite familiar with David’s face,” John Creighton, the manager of the pub, said.

Parnell appears in court, gets bail

Wayne Parnell, the South Africa and Pune Warriors bowler, has been granted bail by a Mumbai court after surrendering before it on charges of testing positive for recreational drugs, following a police raid on a party in the city last year. Legspinner Rahul Sharma, who also tested positive in that case, played for Warriors on Sunday against Kings XI Punjab.A Warriors spokesman said Parnell went to the authorities with his lawyer. “He still hasn’t joined the squad,” the spokesman said. “He cannot do so until he gets bail and BCCI clearance.” However, it is understood that securing bail will make it much easier for him to secure the BCCI clearance – Sharma has already obtained it.Tony Irish, CEO of the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA), said the issue was being dealt with as an individual matter with Parnell and his agent. “He [Parnell] knew this was going to happen and he appointed Indian lawyers to deal with it,” Irish said to ESPNcricinfo. “He is going through the process and we don’t believe there is any substance to the charges. The next step is for the prosecution to see if there is sufficient evidence to have a trial or if they will dismiss the charges.”Speaking to ESPNcricinfo last month, Parnell had confirmed he would play in the IPL and claimed innocence on the drug charge. “As far as I am concerned, everything is fine,” he said. “I’ve received a mail from Pune saying I have to come. I’ve got nothing to hide. The full story will come out once I get over there. They tested everyone that was at the party. I need to find my sample, because if they tested me they must have my sample and we need to match that up.”I’ve been subjected to drug testing in my last five years as a professional cricketer, and I haven’t tested positive once. So I’ve got nothing to worry about. As far as I am aware, they didn’t give any specific samples and put them to names. They just said that a certain number of people tested positive. The individual samples need to be shown now.”Parnell and Sharma were among 90 people detained following the party at a hotel in the Juhu suburb of Mumbai on May 20 last year, a day after Pune Warriors’ IPL 2012 campaign ended. According to reports, drugs including cocaine, MDMA and cannabis were consumed at the party.Of the 90 people, 86 apparently tested positive – including 35 foreign nationals, who have been “shown as wanted” according to a police official. These 86 people had a 1200-page charge sheet drawn up against them last month, according to .

Bumrah available for selection for Mumbai Indians against RCB

Jayawardene on Bumrah and Rohit’s availability for MI vs RCB

Jasprit Bumrah is available for selection for Mumbai Indians’ game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Monday, head coach Mahela Jayawardene has confirmed.”He’s available, he’s training today, and should be available [for the RCB game],” Jayawardene said ahead of MI’s net session at the Wankhede Stadium. “He arrived last night, he had his sessions with NCA [National Cricket Academy, now Centre of Excellence] to finalise that, he’s been handed over to our physios. He’s bowling today, so all good.”Bumrah was given a warm welcome at the MI team huddle, with batting coach Kieron Pollard hoisting him into the air with the words, “Welcome, Mufasa.” MI have lost three of their first four matches of IPL 2025 and his return is a huge boost to a bowling attack that had included several inexperienced Indian bowlers such as Vignesh Puthur, Ashwani Kumar and Satyanarayana Raju. Bumrah was MI’s leading wicket-taker in IPL 2024 with 20 scalps, the third most in the season.Bumrah was among the first batch of bowlers in the nets on Sunday and bowled alongside Trent Boult, Mitchell Santner and Karn Sharma, with bowling coach Lasith Malinga keeping a close watch. He ran in at full tilt and bowled at brisk speeds to MI’s openers Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton. Bumrah operated primarily from over the wicket to Rohit and went around the stumps to the left-hander Rickelton. He found Rohit’s outside edge with a length ball that would have carried to slip, and followed up with a jog towards the batter. Rohit shouldered arms to the next delivery. After a 30-minute stint in the nets, Bumrah walked away. He returned an hour later to have a word with MI’s bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and bowl at Santner, Corbin Bosch and Bevon Jacobs. He bowled a few deliveries off a short run-up before steaming in again – hitting good lengths and bowling a few yorkers.”Boom’s coming back from a pretty decent layoff, so we need to give him that space,” Jayawardene had said. “Not expect too much. Knowing Jasprit he will be up for it. We’re very happy to have him in the camp, the experience he brings, that extra voice out there in the middle, chatting with Boulty [Trent Boult], chatting with Deepak [Chahar] or any other younger bowler, giving that advice is also very valuable for us. That’s what we’re looking forward to from him.”

Bumrah joined the MI squad on Saturday, after getting clearance from the BCCI’s medical staff at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. He has not played competitive cricket since the Sydney Test in the first week of January, when he suffered a stress reaction in the back, and missed India’s home bilateral series against England and the Champions Trophy during his recovery. He has been building his bowling workload up in recent weeks at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence. He’s been cautious about his recovery, and wants to ensure he is fully fit before returning to action, keeping in mind India’s five-Test series in England starting on June 28.Bumrah has played all his IPL cricket for MI, starting in 2013 and picking up 165 wickets in 133 matches over the years. The only IPL season he has missed since was in 2023, when he had a back injury. This latest injury is his first back injury since he had back surgery in March 2023.

Rajasthan look to erase Kotla choke

ESPNcricinfo previews the IPL match between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Daredevils in Jaipur

The Preview by Kanishkaa Balachandran30-Apr-2012Match factsMay 1, 2012, Jaipur
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Royals are back at their fortress, where they have a 100% record against Daredevils•AFP

Big PictureRajasthan Royals will still be wondering how they botched the chase against Delhi Daredevils two days back. With 15 needed off 12 balls, with nine wickets in hand, you would back yourself for a comfortable chase. Yet, what ensued reiterated the theory that all it takes is good over to tilt the scales in Twenty20s. Leave too much to the end, and the joke’s on you. Royals have a chance to set things right against the same opponent, in their Jaipur fortress. They will be boosted by the arrival from the West Indies of the Australian Shane Watson, who will have to conquer jet-lag first, and Morne Morkel next. If Watson does play straightaway, the question is who will make way – either Brad Hodge or Owais Shah. Three consecutive defeats will be at the back of their minds when they take on the in-form Daredevils. With 14 points, Daredevils are still on top. Should they lose, they will remain in that position. Luck’s going their way and their season has been a marked improvement from last year. This will be Kevin Pietersen’s last game before he flies back home and his presence as an impact player will be missed. A big plus for Daredevils is the contribution of two low-profile Indian players – Shahbaz Nadeem and Yogesh Nagar. Nagar was the unsung hero of the previous game, making the most of the final over to give the score some respectability.Form guide (most recent first)
Delhi Daredevils: WWWLW
Rajasthan Royals: LLLWWPlayers to watchThough Morkel’s tight penultimate over in the chase hogged the attention, Umesh Yadav’s effort in the final over cannot be ignored. Though he had 12 to defend, he was parsimonious in his first three deliveries, giving away only two runs. A freak six by Ajinkya Rahane nearly overshadowed his efforts, but Yadav held his nerve for the final ball, beating the well-set Rahane for pace.Royals’ Amit Singh picked up two wickets, but was the most expensive bowler at the Kotla, giving 41 runs. Twenty of those came off his final over, the last of the innings, which made the difference in the final analysis. If Siddharth Trivedi returns, Amit Singh’s place could be in trouble.Stats and trivia Royals and Daredevils have played each other twice at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. Royals won both games.Daredevils run-rate in the last six overs stands at 9.15, while their bowlers concede 8.11 per over in the last six.Quotes”We probably bowled the best of any teams against Delhi, who have such a formidable batting line-up.”

“Great spirit shown by the team. Brilliant stuff from Morne. Must have been heartbreaking for Ajinkya though.”

Southee to be dropped for second Test

Tim Southee is expected to be dropped from the New Zealand squad for the second Test against South Africa, after conceding 140 runs for no wicket in the first Test

Tim Southee could not find the success his fellow fast bowlers did in Dunedin•AFP

Tim Southee is expected to be dropped from the New Zealand squad for the second Test against South Africa, after conceding 140 runs for no wicket in the first Test, in Dunedin. Southee also had a torrid time in the limited-over games against South Africa, going for 64 off 10 overs in the first ODI, 61 off eight in the second, and 40 runs off four overs in the second Twenty20. Brent Arnel and Andrew Ellis are both in the Test squad and one of them is expected to take Southee’s place in the XI.Southee will go back to domestic cricket and play for Northern Districts in the next round of the Plunket Shield, which starts on Saturday, to work on issues with technique and form. Before the home series against South Africa, Southee had not had much to do in New Zealand’s thrashing of Zimbabwe in the two-and-a-half-day Napier Test. On the tour of Australia last year, his five wickets had come at 44.6 runs apiece, and he was overshadowed by Doug Bracewell.Ross Taylor, the New Zealand captain, had said after the first Test against South Africa that Southee had been having issues with his action. “Tim did not have the game of his life,” Taylor said. “He struggled a little bit with his action but he’s played a few Tests now. He’s a confidence player and hopefully he can bounce back from this.”Meanwhile, BJ Watling and Dean Brownlie remain on the injured list for New Zealand, meaning Kruger van Wyk and Rob Nicol are likely to keep their places in the XI. Brownlie is expected to be back for the third Test. The second Test is in Hamilton, starting March 15.Edited by Dustin Silgardo

Asia Cup dates rule out India-Pakistan series

The Asian Cricket Council has confirmed that the Asia Cup 2012 will go ahead as scheduled, from March 12 to 22 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, all but ruling out the possibility of Pakistan touring India as outlined in the Future Tours Programme. The decision was taken at the ACC’s meeting in Singapore earlier this week; it also endorsed, pending a fuller discussion and satisfaction with security and other issues, a proposal by Pakistan to host the 2014 tournament.”It was agreed that the Asia Cup 2012 would go ahead on the proposed dates,” Subhan Ahmed, the PCB chief operating officer, told ESPNcricinfo. “There was discussion of the ACC postponing the Asia Cup if both India and Pakistan agreed to play their series within that slot but that idea has faded out for many reasons.”The PCB was hoping at the meeting to get some confirmation from the BCCI on the resumption of bilateral series between India and Pakistan but Ahmed said that the BCCI representative, Ratnakar Shetty, was unable to give any assurance in the absence of N Srinivasan, the president of the Indian board.”Pakistan-India series was not on the agenda at the ACC meeting but we were looking forward to Srinivasan coming across to discuss it,” Ahmed said. “We had an ideal platform here to talk with our India counterpart but he [Srinivasan] didn’t attend the meeting.”He [Shetty] was not in a position to talk on it. So I don’t think India and Pakistan could play each other in a full series next year but they will meet in the Asia Cup.”Zaka Ashraf, the PCB chairman, was also in Singapore. He was due to travel to Chennai in the first week of December to talk to Srinavasan on the mutual cricketing interests of both countries but the sudden illness of Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari, also the PCB’s chief patron, forced him to postpone of the visit. At the ACC meeting, Pakistan also proposed hosting the 2014 Asia Cup. Ahmed said that the other ACC members showed their support and understood how essential the hosting of the event was for the country but asked the PCB to satisfy them on security concerns. “Our request has been endorsed and was not turned down. They want a full discussion on the precautionary steps that the PCB will take to ensure security. We obviously assured them the best and the case has been deferred until next meeting.”

I'm not going to change my batting – Dilshan

Tillakaratne Dilshan, the Sri Lanka captain, has said he will not consider changing the way he bats after a pair of impetuous innings contributed to his team’s heavy defeat by Australia in the first Test in Galle

Daniel Brettig03-Sep-2011

Tillakaratne Dilshan: “I’ve batted aggressively over the last three or four years and I want to play my shots.”•AFP

Tillakaratne Dilshan, the Sri Lanka captain, has said he will not consider changing the way he bats after a pair of impetuous innings contributed to his team’s heavy defeat by Australia in the first Test in Galle.Mahela Jayawardene and Angelo Mathews added 142 before being parted on the fourth day, showing what might have been achieved by Sri Lanka with a little more application on the most difficult of Galle pitches. Dilshan admitted his side’s first innings surrender for 105 had been the key to their downfall, but has no intention of reining in his own game.”We can’t expect to get out for 105 in the first innings [and win],” Dilshan said. “That is why we lost this match. We can’t give a 150-run lead, especially on this kind of wicket. We planned to get 220-230 runs [in the fourth innings] but unfortunately we had to get 400 runs.”[But] I’m not going to change my batting, I’ve batted aggressively over the last three or four years and I want to play my shots. I play my natural game. Especially on a wicket that it is not easy to survive on, you have to play some shots and overcome that [challenge] with something special.”On the second morning Dilshan drove Trent Copeland’s first ball for four then attempted to repeat the shot from the second and was pouched at short cover by Ricky Ponting. In the second innings he played a succession of questionable strokes before being bowled by Ryan Harris, helping open up the innings and the match for Australia.Sri Lanka have now gone nine matches since last registering a Test victory, the sort of streak that puts Australia’s struggles around the Ashes series into some perspective. The hosts are yet to win a Test since the retirement of Muttiah Muralitharan, who seems to have left the same sort of hole Richard Hadlee did for New Zealand when he retired in 1990.”We have to find a way to win matches,” Dilshan said. “After Murali retired, it is very difficult to win matches, but we’ve got new spinners. I look forward to winning upcoming matches. The omission of Ajantha Mendis had been a talking point through the match, especially in the second innings when Suraj Randiv did not trouble Australia as much as a spin bowler might have expected to on a dastardly pitch. Dilshan defended the selectors’ call.”In the last few matches Randiv and [Rangana] Herath clearly did well for our team. Mendis played in the last Test series, but these two have been better overall. That is why we picked them. I feel they were a good choice for this wicket.”Sri Lanka’s primary consolation came from Jayawardene and Mathews, who showed tremendous courage and skill to hold up Australia’s attack. Dilshan said he had nurtured slims hopes for victory while Jayawardene was at the crease.”Their fightback was great. After being 68 for five, I felt they put us in a winning position at one stage,” he said. “Mahela batted really well, he showed his character and experience.”He’s batted in these kinds of situations a lot over the last six or seven years for Sri Lanka. When the team is struggling, he puts his hand up and puts runs on the board. Today he did the same thing. Unfortunately he got out to the new ball, but I’m really happy with the way these two batted.”
