Nuno must axe Lo Celso from Spurs’ XI

Last season’s Carabao Cup finalists Tottenham Hotspur begin their quest to go one better this evening as they head to the Midlands to face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.

Nuno Santo will be looking for a reaction upon his second return to his former hunting ground after his side endured a week of disappointing results, including back-to-back 3-0 defeats in the Premier League.

The Portuguese coach has plenty to ponder in terms of team selection, particularly with the north London derby on the horizon this weekend.

One player who has no business being part of his starting XI for the trip is Argentinian midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, who looked hugely underwhelming in the defeat to Chelsea, as explained by Football FanCast here.

He was recalled to the lineup for the first time since the international break, when he defied club orders and landed himself in hot water for his involvement in Argentina’s controversial clash with Brazil.

The £26m-rated playmaker has struggled to impress ever since his £55m move from Real Betis two years ago and there are no signs that it’s about to change anytime soon.

Across 70 appearances – the most at any team for which he’s played – Lo Celso has only managed to contribute seven goals and four assists at a rate of one every 359 minutes, or once every four games, via Transfermarkt.

That’s just not good enough for an attack-minded player who has previously been lauded as “technically gifted” and “phenomenal” by his current and former peers, Harry Winks and Jose Mourinho, respectively.

Spurs currently rank dead last in the Premier League for expected goals (xG) on the season, recording a total of just 4.42, whilst they have only created two big chances across their five league games, per The Athletic.

It’s evident that Lo Celso is just not the creative solution that Nuno needs if Tottenham are to put an end to their troubles.

Based on several months of evidence over the past two seasons – he has just one goal from 49 Premier League appearances – the 25-year-old midfielder has no place in the starting XI, especially if Spurs want to go one better than last year.

Nuno must be bold and ruthless by axing Lo Celso tonight.

Rain leaves it all in the balance

A day of rain in Buenos Aries meant that two of the final round-robin matches will have to be replayed on Saturday

A day of rain in Buenos Aires meant that two of the final round-robin matches will have to be replayed on Saturday, keeping the World Cup dreams of Afghanistan and Uganda still alive. Both teams were in precarious positions when rain came to their aid. In the only game that was completed, Papua New Guinea thrashed Hong Kong to move to top the table with eight points, but they will have to await the results of Saturday’s games – if both Afghanistan and Uganda win, net run-rate will determine which teams make it through to the ICC World Cup Qualifier.A disastrous batting performance from Hong Kong against Papua New Guinea ended their hopes of advancing. Five of their top six failed to get past 10, and it was a 25 from No. 8 Ilyas Gull that helped them to 91. The only other batsmen to reach double digits were Zain Abbas (18) and Irfan Ahmed (10), with extras contributing 13. Loa Nou took 3 for 12 off 7.3 overs for PNG, with Rarva Dikana and John Ovia snapping two each in similar economical spells. PNG raced to the target in 12.3 overs, giving a healthy boost to their net run-rate, which had dropped after their heavy loss to Afghanistan. The openers put on 82 in no time. Vani Morea hit two sixes in his 31-ball 42, while Chris Amini made an unbeaten on 38 off 44 balls.”Today was a completely different performance to Wednesday. I thought we needed to stand up collectively and show a bit of character and the boys responded really well,” Martin Gleeson, PNG’s coach, said. “There were no individual stars with the bowling – it was just a really good all-round performance.”Our batting focus was on knocking off the runs as quickly as possible, hitting the ball and not slogging it. I think we showed that we can score six or seven runs an over with the bat. We will just have to see how the other matches end up.”Defeat looked imminent for Afghanistan against Cayman Islands when rain, which had caused a five-hour interruption, returned to save them. Things went wrong for Afghanistan, one of the pre-tournament favourites, from the start, with openers Shafiqullah and Karim Khan falling cheaply. They were reduced to 47 for 5 when Raees Ahmadzai and Mohammad Nabi were dismissed in the space of four balls by Saheed Mohamed. Captain Nowroz Mangal’s unbeaten 26 helped them recover to 68 for 5 in 31 overs before rain halted play. When play resumed, Duckworth/Lewis came into play, and Cayman Islands needed only 63 off 20 overs. Dawlat Ahmadzai removed the openers, but Keneil Irving put the chase on track with three fours in a Hameed Hassan over. At 35 for 2 off seven overs, Cayman Islands were in sight of an upset win when a late downpour forced to umpires to call off the game. Afghanistan played a bit smartly as well, delaying matters in the field in order to let the elements bail them out. A win on Saturday will ensure their place in the top two, since they already have a better net run-rate than PNG.”I nearly had another heart attack. I think I need to say thank you to God as he has been very kind to us today. We needed it to rain and it did,” Kabir Khan, Afghanistan’s coach, said. “We have to play better tomorrow as PNG has already won its game and Uganda has a very good chance of winning their game as well, so we need to win and with a good run rate as well.”Cayman Islands coach Theo Cuffy was disappointed but knew there was nothing they could do about the rain. “I thought we looked very comfortable today, but we will have to see what happens tomorrow. I am confident, but tomorrow is just another day. We will try our best. I thought our bowlers really stuck to their plans today and it is just unfortunate about the weather.”Uganda, too, were wobbling in their game against Argentina, and were at 69 for 4 in 31 overs when rain intervened. Lucas Paterlini struck twice for the hosts, but the inclement weather upset their hopes – at least on the day – of finishing a disappointing campaign on a winning note. With the two replays taking place on Saturday, the play-off matches for the standings have been cancelled.

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs facing Takehiro Tomiyasu setback

Tottenham Hotspur have been jolted in their pursuit of Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu, with one of their London rivals locked in talks to sign the 22-year-old, as relayed by David Ornstein on Twitter.

The Lowdown: ‘Dependable’ Tomiyasu has excelled in Italy

Producing an impressive level of consistency since moving to his current club in 2019, Tomiyasu has shown a dependability in both centre-back and right-back positions.

Adept at mopping up sticky situations at the back, the Japan international obtained a commendable average of 3.3 clearances per Serie A game last season [WhoScored].

Earning adulation for his performances, he was labelled a “very, very dependable player” by Italian football expert Conor Clancy earlier this month [Football FanCast].

The Latest: Late twist in the tale as Arsenal look to strike

Tomiyasu’s form has seen Tottenham Hotspur register serious interest in his services this summer, even having a £15.5m bid rejected for the Japan international in early July [Sky Sports].

However, there could now be a sting in the tail. According to The Athletic journalist Ornstein on Twitter, Arsenal are said to be working on a deal to sign Tomiyasu before tonight’s transfer deadline.

In a surprise turn of events, the Gunners reportedly have ‘talks underway’ to sign the 6 foot 2 ace, although any movement may be dependent on positional departures at the club [The Athletic].

The Verdict: Royal arrival could soften Tomiyasu blow

Losing out on Tomiyasu may come as a source of frustration for Tottenham, but the seemingly imminent arrival of Emerson Royal will help to soften the blow for Nuno Espirito Santo.

A regular for Bologna in 2020/21, the former Sint-Truiden defender featured 33 times in all competitions, scoring twice [Transfermarkt].

Following that up with a strong showing at the Olympic Games with his native Japan, helping them to reach the semi-finals [Eurosport], it is clear to see why Spurs wanted to secure his signature.

Nevertheless, with three senior right-backs on the books in N17, any notion of Tomiyasu pitching up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this window has probably run its course.

Ismael drops major West Brom injury update

West Bromwich Albion have been handed a double injury boost ahead of their Championship fixture on Saturday.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by the club’s official website, Valerien Ismael confirmed that both Grady Diangana and Matt Clarke look set to feature against Luton Town on Saturday, with each player having recovered from their respective injuries.

Diangana managed 64 minutes in Albion’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth last weekend before being withdrawn due to a knock, while Clarke missed the fixture after picking up a hip injury on the morning of the game.

However, both players now look ready to return to action, with the Frenchman stating: “Grady is ok. He’s recovered well and we’ve had a long week to prepare him for Saturday’s game.

“We managed him quite well at the start of the week and then he trained the last three days with the full squad. We’re happy he’s available for the game.

“Matt Clarke is also back after he suffered a very small injury before the game against Bournemouth last weekend. It’s great for me to have the choice and the players need to make it difficult for me to pick the team and the squad.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how impressive Diangana was for Albion in their most recent Championship campaign, and that Clarke would very much appear to be an upgrade on his replacement last week (Cedric Kipre), West Brom fans must be buzzing that both players look set to play a part against Luton this weekend.

Diangana’s availability is a particularly big boost, with the winger having scored eight goals, registered six assists and created eight big chances over his 30 Championship appearances for the Baggies back in 2019/20.

These returns saw the £9m-rated man earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.06, ranking him as the club’s third-best performer in the second tier that season.

Meanwhile, over Clarke’s 42 Championship appearances while on loan at Derby County last season, the £2.7m-rated man helped his side to keep 12 clean sheets, as well as averaging 1.4 interceptions, 1.4 tackles and 4.3 clearances and winning a whopping 8.1 duels per game.

These metrics saw the £21k-per-week centre-back earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.05, ranking him as the Rams’ third-best player in the league.

As such, both players very much seem to have the ability to make a real difference in Ismael’s promotion push this season, with the manager undoubtedly hoping that Diangana and Clarke can help him secure his first Championship win with West Brom against Luton on Saturday.

No offers made for Villa target Pape Sarr

An update has emerged on reported Aston Villa transfer target Pape Sarr regarding the interest in his services so far this summer.

What’s the talk?

Metz president Bernard Serin has confirmed that there have been no offers for the 18-year-old so far in this window, stating that Sarr “hasn’t received any serious offer”.

Villa have been touted with an interest in the midfielder in the transfer window, but Serin has made it clear that no club has come in with a concrete move.

When asked about his future, Sarr remained committed to Metz by outlining his aims for the Ligue 1 side next season. He said: “At FC Metz, our first objective is to keep the team in Ligue 1. But winning trophies with them is also part of my ambitions for next season.

“I want to have a better season than in the 2020/21 [campaign] and if possible, score more goals.”

Get it done

Johan Lange must get a deal done for Sarr before the end of the window. Villa have just under a month left to complete their summer business and a swoop for the midfielder could be a shrewd addition in the short- and long-term, which is why they must react to this update from Serin by making their move.

With no other clubs acting on their potential interest in the teenager, Villa could snap him up with little to no competition if they move swiftly. However, if Lange dawdles and waits until the end of the window, that could allow time for other clubs to become desperate and then enter the race for Sarr if they do not get their other targets.

Metz head coach Frédéric Antonetti recently claimed that Sarr “will go far” in the game and praised his hardworking nature on and off the pitch. He stated: “Pape Matar Sarr is elegance in the midfield, it’s talent, it’s making others play.

The club’s general manger Olivier Perrin added: “He will be able to go as far as he wants to go. He must work, be as he is there, modest, regular, hardworking. He must continue to love football and he will do like the great players, he will go far. I think he will go very far.”

This shows that he is highly-rated by his club and has the attitude required to continually improve as he progresses in his career. Therefore, this could be an excellent investment opportunity for Villa if they are able to bring him in for a reasonable price, as they could sign him and develop the midfielder over the course of the next few years, leading to him either being sold on for a profit or becoming a key player for Villa.

The 18-year-old averaged an impressive WhoScored rating of 6.82 in 22 Ligue 1 appearances for Metz last season, scoring three times. This shows that he is already able to consistently perform in the French top flight despite his young age, and he could arrive at Villa Park to provide competition in midfield whilst learning from the likes of John McGinn and Douglas Luiz to continue his development.

Hay tips Bamford to sign new Leeds deal

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford should sign a new Whites contract in the near future, according to reliable journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Bamford stars for Leeds

Marcelo Bielsa’s side shone in their first season back in the Premier League, with a number of individuals standing out, from Kalvin Phillips to Raphinha.

It was Bamford who was arguably Leeds’ star man, however, scoring 17 goals, registering seven assists and clearly improving in his all-round game under Bielsa’s guidance.

The 27-year-old’s current deal expires next summer, so the Whites run the risk of losing him on a free transfer soon if they don’t take action.

The Latest: Hay provides update

Writing in a Q&A for The Athletic on Friday [via MOT Leeds News], Hay said he is confident that Bamford will extend his stay at Elland Road: “They have been talking for a while and it’s never sounded like it was widely complicated.

“I’m pretty sure they’ll get there and an announcement on that shouldn’t be too far away. But whereas it became clear last night that Meslier was about to sign new terms, I’m yet to get the nod about Bamford.

“Suffice to say, he’s still massively part of the plans – and set up to be Bielsa’s number nine again this season.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-12/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Extend his stay

Ensuring Bamford signs a new deal is of the utmost importance, considering how superbly he has led the line under Bielsa.

He has improved his game so much, both in terms of attacking output and defensive work – he averaged one clearance per game in the league last season, compared to 0.4 and 0.5 during two years at Middlesbrough in 2016/17 and 2017/18 – and he is at an age where he can go up another gear as he enters his prime.

Bamford’s performances will again be vital to Leeds having a successful season and if he can replicate his 2020/21 form, an England call-up could even come his way.

Celtic offer tabled to sign Henry

According to transfer journalist Ekrem Konur, Celtic have now tabled a seven-figure bid to sign towering OH Leuven forward Thomas Henry.

The Lowdown: Major Celtic rebuild underway…

New Bhoys boss Ange Postecoglou has already overseen a flurry of new summer signings since his appointment at Parkhead.

Indeed, Kyogo Furuhashi, Carl Starfelt, Liel Abada, Joe Hart, Liam Shaw, Osaze Urhoghide and James McCarthy have all arrived in Glasgow as Celtic aim to take back their SPFL crown off bitter rivals Rangers (Transfermarkt).

In the last few days, claims have emerged of the Hoops eyeing yet another player as they enter the race to sign Henry (Scottish Sun).

The Latest: Hoops table seven-figure bid for Henry…

As per Konur, backing other reports, Celtic have actually now made an offer for the Jupiler Pro League forward as they look to reinforce Postecoglou’s options for 21/22.

The 6 foot 3 powerhouse, who bagged a fantastic 21 goals and six assists in 31 league appearances last season for Leuven, is the subject of heavy interest from the Hoops with a bid finally submitted.

It is believed that Celtic have lodged an approach to sign the 26-year-old with a seven-figure fee on the table at £7 million – a big statement by the Scottish giants as they eye yet another new arrival.

The Verdict: Battle on the horizon…

Henry’s physical presence combined with his proficiency in front of goal mark him out as a real potential coup for Celtic, even for £7m, and he could provide a real injection of quality.

However, The player’s UK representative, Paul Tait, recently told Football Insider that his client will ‘consider all his options’ before making any final decisions on a move – with offers coming from Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and Britain.

Celtic could face a real battle sign the striker who is clearly in high demand, as confirmed by his agent. If they win the fight however, they’ll be getting a real physical presence up front coming off the best goalscoring campaign of his career thus far.

Vasco bate o Nova Iguaçu e garante classificação dupla no Estadual
