Newcastle United: Sean Longstaff is just the beginning

It’s been one hell of a rollercoaster ride this year for the Newcastle United fans. As well as a nice upturn in league position, the fans have been treated to some youth players coming through the system. For such a footballing hotbed, the Geordie faithful aren’t used to seeing homegrown prospects flourish in the first-team, so it’s certainly a novelty.

Indeed, with players like Sean Longstaff proving that Newcastle United have a bright future ahead of them, we look at a couple of players who can look to set St. James Park alight in the coming seasons.

Don’t fear, Geordies. There are more out there. Signings not been rolling through the door these days, but the youngsters can.

Cal Roberts

Callum Roberts has recently gone out on loan to League two side Colchester United in order to gain some first-team football. However, this season, in the Newcastle under 23 side, he is proving to be a real star of Newcastle United’s future.

Having scored 9 goals and bagging 6 assists in the Premier League 2, the 21-year-old forward is showing the youth coaches, and, more importantly, Rafa Benitez that he is a player that can handle the youth leagues to be relied on to score a goal.

Having only recently moved to League 2, it will be interesting to see how the young Englishman handles the lower leagues. If he is to perform well, he may just be a name on the Newcastle team sheet next season.

Elias Sörensen

Elias Sörensen has proven to be one of the main features for the Newcastle Under 23s. Bagging himself 12 goals in 14 Premier League 2 games, the dazzling young Dane has certainly been showing potential to become one of the Premier League’s deadliest strikers.

Considering the Magpies have been reliant on Joselu at times this season, that’s exciting.

Indeed, his good form earned him a loan move to Blackpool to get first-team football and try and prove his worth in what is a really tough League 1.

The 19-year-old centre forward has shown incredible strength and pace in the lower leagues and youth games, and will certainly be one to watch in the future for Newcastle and the Danish national team alike.

Tottenham fans think Eriksen has given up on the club

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Tottenham fans have been running the rule over Saturday’s draw against Arsenal, and they’re not too happy with the form of Christian Eriksen.

Hugo Lloris was the hero on Saturday as Spurs stayed one step ahead of their north London rivals in the race for top four.

The Gunners took the lead in the first half though and were good value for it, with Aaron Ramsey racing through in the first half to open the scoring.

Spurs answered back through a controversial Harry Kane penalty before Lloris saved the day late on, denying a tame Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang spot kick in the dying moments of the match.

There were several poor performances in Mauricio Pochettino’s side despite the relatively positive result, but none were worse than Eriksen.

The 27 year-old, who will be out of contract in the summer of 2020, looked completely disinterested throughout the match if truth be told, and he has now failed to score or assist in three consecutive games.

Eriksen has always been a hugely popular figure at the club, but looking disinterested in what, for many, is the biggest game of the season might just be the clearest sign yet that he intends to leave the club.

Fans suspected something similar after a quiet showing in the defeat to Chelsea, and the Twitter reactions down below do not make pretty reading…

Liverpool: Micah Richards says Fabinho can replace the injured Jordan Henderson

Micah Richards joined BBC’s Football Daily podcast and talked about Liverpool possibly making a comeback against Atletico Madrid with Fabinho coming in for Jordan Henderson.

Losing someone as important as Henderson to an injury was always going to be a big blow, especially with a huge Champions League clash on the horizon in just a couple of weeks’ time. Still, Liverpool shouldn’t be too worried about that, says Richards, as Fabinho can come in and replace their skipper for the upcoming game at Anfield, where every team is bound to struggle.

Here’s what he said for the Football Daily podcast (26/2/2020): “Losing Henderson was a little bit of a blow for them but they’ve got Fabinho who can come in. So I believe going to Anfield, for any team, it’s going to be difficult. I believe they can overturn that tie.”

The Reds’ skipper has so far only missed the game against West Ham due to his hamstring injury but James Pearce noted when speaking to the Red Agenda that the Merseyside giants appeared to lack control in the midfield engine room without him.

With that in mind, Fabinho is the only player who made more passes in the Hammers game than Henderson averages per game this season (76 to 62.4) and he did make as many interceptions (1) as the ex-Sunderland man does on average over the same period, so the stats suggest he can fulfil that role – even if they are weaker in terms of personnel.

Liverpool fans, do you think that Fabinho is a worthy replacement for Henderson? Is the Liverpool captain going to be a huge miss for the upcoming games? Tell us down in the comment section below!

Swansea fans want to see more of Luciano Narsingh

[ad_pod ]

Luciano Narsingh made his first Swansea City appearance of the season in their 2-1 defeat at Leeds United in the Championship on Wednesday night.

A 2017 arrival from PSV Eindhoven, Narsingh scored once in 18 Premier League appearances for Swansea during the 2017-18 campaign.

The 28-year-old has not been in the plans of Swansea boss Graham Potter this season, but he did appear as a second-half substitute against Leeds.

There is absolutely no question that the winger – a 16-time Netherlands international – has a lot of talent and Swansea need to find a way to get him fit and firing for the final months of the campaign.

It is safe to say that the Swansea fans were delighted to see Narsingh back in action on Wednesday night.

And a number have called on head coach Potter to hand the attacker more minutes between now and the end of the season.

A selection of the Twitter reaction from the club’s fans can be seen below:

Samir Nasri is not what West Ham need

[ad_pod ]

According to Sky Sports, Samir Nasri is set to a sign a short-term contract with West Ham United as he approaches the end of his 18-month ban for receiving an intravenous treatment in 2016.

What’s the word?

Nasri last played competitive football in November, turning out for Turkish club Antalyaspor. Since then, however, he has been banned from playing or training with any professional outfit.

Now, the 31-year-old looks set to sign with the Hammers, meaning he shall reunite with manager Manuel Pellegrini, whom he played under at Manchester City.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”327140″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Leicester Trump Man City Chelsea & Liverpool”]

The attacking midfielder is undoubtedly a talented player and could perhaps still impress in the Premier League. Signing him is certainly a risk, though, especially as he’d be joining a dressing room at the London Stadium already full of big characters.

A risk not worth taking

In Marko Arnautovic, the Irons already have one combustible figure in their squad, and the introduction of a player such as Nasri could disturb the squad harmony in east London. What’s more, the presence of the 41-cap former France international could prevent others in the squad from getting the game time they deserve.

Exciting youngster Grady Diangana and the hard-working Robert Snodgrass could both see their minutes on the pitch cruelly curtailed by the arrival of Nasri, which would be harsh given the progress of the latter, and how the former has gone from being a youth star to an effective first-team starter.

West Ham would be better off sticking with what they already have at their disposal rather than rolling the dice on the two-time Premier League winner. Especially as the Frenchman could wind up doing more harm than good to the Hammers’ cause.

Leicester City wise to tie down Ndidi to a new deal

Leicester City have bounced back from their defeat against Manchester United on the Premier League’s opening weekend following their 2-0 win over Wolves last Saturday.

The Foxes went down to 10 men in the 66th minute after Jamie Vardy was shown a straight red for an overzealous tackle on Matt Doherty.

However, as well as claiming all three points, Claude Puel’s men were able to finish the match with a clean sheet with defensive midfielder Wilfred Ndidi playing his part in the shutout.

The Breakdown

Like he has done for much of his Leicester career, £22.5m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Ndidi shielded his team’s back four extremely well and, overall, has been a massive acquisition since arriving at the King Power back in January 2017.

The Foxes were left with a gigantic N’Golo Kante-shaped hole after the World Cup-winning midfielder departed for Chelsea in the summer of 2016.

And, manager at the time Claudio Ranieri, who inspired Leicester to their famous 2015/16 Premier League title win, struggled to plug it with Nampalys Mendy failing to carry out the responsibilities Kante previously had in the team as efficiently.

As a result, the Foxes moved for Ndidi, and their decision to tie him down to a new six-year contract is a wise one (via Leicester City’s official club website).

Alongside the likes of Kante, Nemanja Matic, Fernandinho and Idrissa Gueye, Ndidi is one of the best ball-winning midfielders in the Premier League, capable of making tackles and interceptions anywhere on the pitch.

Leicester faced an almost impossible task in replacing Kante, but the 2016 Premier League champions looked to have overcome the conundrum thanks to Ndidi.

FIFA 18 – You’ll find this year’s version very hard to put down

Ripping open the case of a new FIFA game is a yearly tradition for most football fans, and whilst there’s a lot of familiarity in this year’s iteration, FIFA 18 is a very different game to any offering in the series thus far.

With single player games modes clearly taking precedent this year, the hard work certainly shows. The rebuilt career mode makes the game far more entertaining, with dynamic transfer dealings and improved video content making the mode far less repetitive. Narrative-based mode ‘The Journey’, which follows the career of Alex Hunter, is also far more engaging and entertaining, also returns and should keep players invested for its duration.

The online modes haven’t been neglected either, with Ultimate Team getting a few minor tweaks to make the gameplay more fluid, whilst Seasons Mode remains as addictive as ever as you look to move up through the leagues.

As is the case every year, updated squads and kits make the game fresher, offering something different for seasoned FIFA veterans regardless of which mode they play. Likewise, improved dynamic lighting and refined graphics make the game a sight to behold, with the benefits of the Frostbite Engine coming to the foreground.

The game is not without flaws, and some players may dislike the reduced pace that this iteration in the series offers, but for the casual player it ticks all of the boxes. FIFA is, at its core, a football game, but as with every year, the improvements made to the latest offering make it a title that fans will find hard to put down for the next 12 months.

New Kenny Miller deal is a ‘no brainer’ says McCall

As reported by The Evening Times, Stuart McCall has called upon new Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha to hand the veteran Kenny Miller at new deal at Ibrox when his current contract expires this summer.

What’s the story?

Miller has been one of Rangers’ most consistent players this season, scoring more Scottish Premiership goals than any other player at Ibrox, with nine in total.

However, his future at the club is in limbo with the striker having still been offered a new deal to extend his stay in Glasgow.

According to one former Rangers manager, Stuart McCall, the decision on whether or not to offer Miller a new deal is an easy one.

Speaking to The Evening Times, McCall said:

I don’t know the philosophy and what the new manager might want. For myself, it would be a no-brainer. He has the know-how, the experience and he is probably in the running to be the Player of the Year for Rangers. I don’t know why there is a delay but I would get him signed up for his impact and help in and around the football club, as well as on the park.

At 37 years of age, there’s no doubt that Miller is in the twilight of his career but given his form so far this season, you’d be hard pushed to argue that his time is up at Scottish Premiership level.

The Light Blues need all hands on deck if they are to attempt to close the gap on Celtic next season and even having him around to help coach youngsters and appear of the bench would be a suitable suggestion. He clearly loves the club and is exactly the type of professional young players coming through Auchenhowie can look up to.

Hughes facing deadline day transfer scramble, reveals which position will be targeted

According to reports from Sky Sports, manager Mark Hughes has revealed Stoke City may have to wait until deadline day to get some of their transfer deals over the line.

The Potters have already signed three players this summer in the form of Joe Allen, Ramadan Sobhi and Ryan Sweeney – arriving from Liverpool, Al Alhy and AFC Wimbledon respectively.

But the latter duo, both aged 19, appear unlikely to be offered significant roles in the first-team squad next season.

Stoke City reportedly tabled a £17million transfer bid for West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino earlier this summer and have also been linked with former Manchester United star Robin van Persie.

But Stoke manager Mark Hughes has revealed that he’s more focused on making defensive additions before the summer transfer window slams shut.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s fair to say in defensive areas we probably need one more but we’ll wait and see if the right player becomes available.”

And the Welshman further stated that the Bet365 Stadium outfit could have to wait until deadline day to seal deals for their top transfer targets.

He said: “We’ve got any number of targets we think we’ve got an opportunity to get over the line. It could be that it goes into the last throes of the window.

“It’s not something I like doing, but sometimes the clubs who have the players you’d like to sign change their view and become more receptive nearer the deadline.

“It’s not ideal, we’ve started the season already but we haven’t been able to get some of the targets we’ve chased in the building. At the end of the day it’s down to the player and the club he’s at. It’s out of our hands.”
