West Ham fans drool over Antonio performance

West Ham United fans have hailed Michail Antonio’s performance against Southampton on Saturday.

The Hammers beat Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men 3-1 at the London Stadium to record their first victory in seven Premier League games.

It moved the Irons clear of the relegation zone at full-time and Antonio was a key component of the victory.

The 29-year-old scored his side’s third goal of the game and also laid on the assist for Sebastien Haller’s strike that gave the hosts the lead.

And fans were quick to praise his performance.

A number of other supporters believe that the Irons have finally found a proper attacking partnership in Antonio and Haller, with manager David Moyes allowing the former the freedom to surge beyond the Saints’ backline.

Did he really play for us?! No West Ham fan has managed to name all of these obscure Irons signings….

One feels that they will need that partnership to keep clicking given the club’s fixture list; they face Arsenal, Wolves, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in their next four games.

Antonio has often been absent from the squad this season – missing 14 games as a result – but has chipped in with two goals and two assists thus far this term.

Meanwhile, West Ham fans have hailed one youngster!

Norwich City get a wake-up call with Preston North End drubbing

The unpredictability of the EFL Championship struck Norwich City on Wednesday night, with Daniel Farke’s men falling to an embarrassing loss to Preston North End.

Going into the game unbeaten in five, it seemed that over-confidence resulted in the poor result.

Norwich were stunned in the 2nd minute itself when poor set-piece defending allowed Ben Davies to score the opener. The Canaries might’ve had the lion’s share of possession, but just weren’t their clinical self on the day. Preston added another later with Paul Gallagher’s penalty and when the reliable Marco Stiepermann had his penalty saved after the half-hour mark, it dawned on Norwich that it just wasn’t their day.

Preston added another one in the second half thanks to Sean Maguire’s effort and Teemu Pukki’s stoppage-time goal only served as a consolation. The Canaries conceded five in their last five games before this, but complacency and complete lack of concentration triggered their downfall.

The hosts were just too mobile on the attack and caught them off-guard on multiple occasions. While Pukki tried his best and had multiple shots saved, even he couldn’t save them. Norwich’s inexperience in defence was exposed, with Jamal Lewis and Max Aarons both disappointing along with the poor Tom Trybull failing to shield their defence in the first half.

With Leeds United once again getting the edge over them to the top of the table, this sorry defeat poses as a reality check for high-flying Norwich, who need to maintain composure to prevail in the Championship race.

Opinion: Spurs must rival Chelsea and Manchester United for Alex Sandro

[ad_pod ]

According to The Mirror, Juventus’ Alex Sandro has revealed his desire to play in the Premier League and thus, surely, put Chelsea and Manchester United on high alert as both have been linked with the defender in previous windows. If Spurs have any sense, they will throw their hat in the ring when the bidding war begins.

What’s the word?

Speaking before Brazil’s friendly with Cameroon in Milton Keynes on Tuesday, the South American left-back said:

“I think one day, who knows what will happen? I have a desire to play in the Premier League.”

Those words will have been music to both the Red Devils’ and Blues’ ears – Jose Mourinho is likely looking for a long-term replacement for the ageing Ashley Young to compete with Luke Shaw, while Maurizio Sarri must surely be in the market for competition for Marcos Alonso, who is currently the only left-back available.

Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino can choose between Danny Rose and Ben Davies on the left side of the defence, but with the former perennially injured and the latter not at his best this season, the Lilywhites are in need of reinforcements if they wish to consolidate top four status.

One of the world’s best

Former Porto man Sandro has established himself as one of the world’s best left-backs in recent years after completing a £23.4m move to the Old Lady in 2015.

The number 12 is the epitome of the modern full-back – equally adept at attacking and defending with outstanding technical ability as well as a mean tackle.

Capable of playing in a four or five-at-the-back, the Brazilian’s versatility is a great asset, as are his 1.8 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game and two assists so far this season (WhoScored).

Transfermarkt values the 5ft 11in left-footer at £40.5m but, as a key first team player at Juve, it would take any club a fair bit more than that to prize him away.

Having won the Serie A title every year since his arrival in Turin, the 27-year-old knows what it takes to win and – forgive me Spurs fans – most of the Tottenham squad currently lack this.

If Daniel Levy were to sanction this ambitious move it would be a huge statement of intent and potentially take the club to the next level.

Nottingham Forest must avoid signing Rudy Gestede from Middlesbrough

According to the Nottingham Post, Middlesbrough’s Rudy Gestede is on the shortlist of potential strikers to replace Ben Brereton at Nottingham Forest, but Aitor Karanka should avoid signing the Benin international.

What’s the story?

Forest were the Championship’s big spenders during this summer’s transfer window, with Karanka making 13 additions to his squad at a cost of over £20m.

Striker Lewis Grabban was brought in from Bournemouth at a cost of £6m and Forest’s transfer record was broken with the capture of Joao Carvalho for £13.2m from Portuguese giants Benfica.

However, England U19 international Brereton was allowed to leave for Championship rivals Blackburn in a deal that could be worth up to £7m, according to the BBC, as Karanka seemingly targets short term success over player development.

Goal shy

The Nottingham Post reports that Forest are still hoping to sign at least one more striker to bolster their attacking options though before the loan and free agent window closes on August 31.

Signing Gestede though would be a mistake for Forest, as the club need goals having netted just seven in their first five games despite the money spent.

The 6ft 4in front man has only scored six goals in 41 appearances for Boro since joining the club from Aston Villa in January 2017. Karanka should be looking for a far more prolific striker than the man who is valued at £5.4m by Transfermarkt.

So, Forest fans, do you think the club should sign Gestede before the deadline? Have your say in our poll below.

Chelsea supporters delighted with team after six-goal thriller

Chelsea fans have not had an awful lot to shout about over the last few weeks, with their team losing against Manchester City and Crystal Palace in the Premier League, in addition to drawing at home to Roma in the Champions League.

It did appear that the Blues would lose their third straight Premier League match when Watford took a 2-1 lead in the second period of Saturday’s clash at Stamford Bridge.

Indeed, the Hornets were threatening to score a third and fourth as Marco Silva’s side committed players forward each time they broke into the final third.

[ad_pod id=’leo-vegas’]

Chelsea showed their metal on home soil, however, with the Premier League champions ultimately running out 4-2 winners to secure a massive three points.

On Sunday morning, Chelsea’s official Twitter account reminded the supporters of what had occurred at Stamford Bridge, and as expected, the response section was full of praise for a team that have been short of confidence in recent games.

A selection of the best reaction can be found below:

Chelsea fans do not want to see striker return to the starting line-up

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has revealed in his pre-match press conference for the crucial Premier League clash against Southampton that striker Diego Costa wasn’t happy to be named among the substitutes for the FA Cup semi-final win against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Saturday.

The Italian confirmed that the Spaniard was less than pleased to be dropped for the 4-2 extra-time victory against Spurs, with Michy Batshuayi instead given a rare start in attack.

Costa did replace the Belgian attacker in the 61st minute however, but the 28-year-old has now failed to score in his last seven appearances for the west London outfit, which has led to some criticism from the fans.

Chelsea supporters were quick to give their reaction to Conte’s comments via social media, with many fans not wanting to see the striker given another start for the rest of the season.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction to the story…

Five reasons signing Bellerin would be a shrewd signing for Man City…

Manchester City have been in imperious form this season. New manager Pep Guardiola has made light work of English football so far and his City side have won 10 games out of 10 under his stewardship.

They top the table with six league victories and are scoring goals with freedom.

Their performances against Manchester United and Bournemouth drew particular praise and Guardiola will be very hopeful about City’s chances this season.

That said, they haven’t reached perfection just yet. The Citizens looked a bit shaky in their last two fixtures versus Swansea City and were made to work hard in their opening game against Sunderland.

There is always room to improve and we think City could do much worse than signing Hector Bellerin.

The 21-year-old has reportedly stalled on contract talks at the Emirates. He is a phenomenal footballer and he would surely help improve their defence even further.

City’s squad is frighteningly good already  but the idea of them strengthening even further should put fear into the eyes of their competitors.

His Barcelona links

The right-back was at Barcelona between 2003 and 2011 before he joined the Gunners, making the same move as previous fan favourite Cesc Fabregas.

However, if he chose to move to Man City, his Barcelona links would be just as notable as he would rejoin former manager Pep Guardiola. Txiki Begiristain is the current director of football at City, too, just as he had been at Barcelona whilst Bellerin was there.

He’d become no.2 immediately

Zabaleta is not the player he once was and Sagna has taken his spot as City’s right back.

The former Arsenal man has impressed at the Blues. However, Sagna, like Zabaleta is not getting any younger and Bellerin would be the perfect replacement for them.

In fact, he would probably become City’s main right back instantly.

His pace

Bellerin has been blessed with a frightening amount of pace. Just this weekend during Arsenal’s 3-0 demolition of Chelsea the 21-year-old sprinted back to catch up with Pedro and stop what looked like a certain goal.

He would slot in very nicely in that City back four.

His defensive ability

He may be blessed with pace but he’s not just some fast flash in the pan. He’s a very well rounded defender actually. He didn’t just catch up with Pedro but he challenged him fairly and wont the ball back.

He’s a phenomenal athlete and despite his lean build, Bellerin is in fact very strong and resolute. The perfect full back perhaps?

Trophies

Unfortunately for Arsenal and Wenger, the Gunners haven’t been blessed with an array of trophies in the past decade.

In fact, two FA Cup triumphs is all they have to show for their efforts.

Whilst Manchester City haven’t done overwhelmingly better in that time, they have won the Premier League twice whilst also winning the League Cup a couple of times.

Bellerin could expect to be part of a title winning side far more if he joined the Citizens.

Man Utd play like they're battling relegation under Erik ten Hag – and FA Cup exit would prove his 'right direction' claim is completely ludicrous

The Red Devils were given a reality check by Fulham at the weekend, but the Dutchman remains blind to their glaring flaws

Erik ten Hag fooled everyone into thinking Manchester United had turned a corner after a strong start to 2024, with four successive Premier League wins taking them back to within sight of the top four. Results started to turn after he welcomed key players back from injury, just as he predicted would happen, and talk of his potential dismissal died down.

But all the problems that were masked by individual moments during that mini-resurgence came rushing back to the surface when Fulham arrived at Old Trafford on Saturday. The Cottagers emerged with a 2-1 victory, their first at the Theatre of Dreams in 21 years, thanks to a 97th-minute strike from Alex Iwobi.

It was only the second time Marco Silva's side have won away all season, but they fully deserved the three points after slicing through United's midfield at will. It was the hosts' 10th Premier League loss of the season, one more than they recorded throughout the entire 2022-23 campaign, and it leaves them eight points behind Aston Villa in the race for the final Champions League spot.

Nottingham Forest are up next in the fifth round of the FA Cup, and they will fancy their chances of repeating their 2-1 win over United – achieved at the City Ground in December – mainly because Ten Hag is still refusing to budge on a set of principles that makes his team far too easy to play against.

Getty'You have to see the bigger picture'

"After one defeat you have to see the bigger picture, and the bigger picture looks very good," Ten Hag said at his latest post-match press conference. "We have to catch up in certain positions and get the injuries back, then we will be more in balance and also strengthen the squad in the transfer windows. You see there are many good players coming up and real high-potential players. They will be getting better, so definitely we are going in the right direction."

The United boss appeared to be referencing Sir Jim Ratcliffe's purchase of a 25 percent stake in the club, with the INEOS chairman currently in the process of putting a new recruitment team in place to overhaul the muddled transfer policy that has been so damaging to the club over the past decade.

But at this rate, there is a very good chance Ten Hag won't be involved in the revolution. Yes, United badly missed Rasmus Hojlund against Fulham, as the Danish striker had been on a scintillating six-match scoring run, and losing Casemiro to a head injury early in the second half was a cruel blow.

United are also having to make do without star defensive duo Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez, but regardless of what starting XI Ten Hag puts out, the theme is always the same. The 54-year-old insists on a high press that his players are incapable of committing to, either through a lack of quality or drive, and opposing teams exploit the massive gaps they leave in the middle of the pitch.

AdvertisementGettyExecution struggles

Across their last five games against Fulham, Luton, Aston Villa, West Ham and Wolves, United have allowed 100 shots at their goal. Ten Hag wants his team to dictate the pace of matches and play quick, incisive passes once they move into the final third, but the players lack the technical quality to execute his vision.

Fulham were just the latest team to play through United's press and pounce on their sloppy passing time and time again. The Red Devils always look vulnerable in and out of possession, and a lack of mobility in defence often leaves Andre Onana exposed between the sticks.

That was clear for all to see for Iwobi's winner, which came after a trademark run from Adama Traore. The former Barcelona winger initially picked the ball up in his own half before bursting past Christian Eriksen and Harry Maguire, and was allowed to advance all the way to the edge of the box before laying it off for Iwobi, who then fooled Amad Diallo and Diogo Dalot with a simple touch onto his right foot before lashing into the bottom corner.

In truth, Ten Hag's men didn't really show any signs of life in the game at all until Maguire headed in an 89th-minute equaliser, as Fulham boss Silva alluded to after the final whistle. "It is clear in my opinion the better team on the pitch won the game," he said. "We are the team that created the most chances, that played better and tried to win most of the moments of the game."

United are playing like a side battling to avoid relegation, not one chasing a seat at Europe's top table, and most of the blame has to fall on Ten Hag.

(C)Getty ImagesTen Hag definitely not 'best in class'

“We need to populate all the key roles with people who are best in class, 10 out of 10s,” Sir Jim Ratcliffe said when sitting down for a media briefing after seeing his minority takeover at Old Trafford approved last week.

Omar Berrada has already been appointed as United's new CEO after being lured away from Manchester City, and INEOS are now working to bring in Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth. Top marks must be given for those ambitious moves, but none of the work behind the scenes will pay off if United don't have the right man sitting in the dugout.

After 21 months in charge, it's pretty clear that's not Ten Hag. He's spent £410 million ($500m) on 16 new players since moving to Old Trafford from Ajax, but it could be argued that none of them have been a success.

Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez had impressive debut seasons as United secured a third-place Premier League finish and the Carabao Cup, but the former's age has caught up with him this term and the latter has been ravaged by injury. Brazilian forward Antony, meanwhile, has done absolutely nothing to justify his £85m ($108m) price tag and now finds himself behind Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo in the squad pecking order.

Signings from last summer such as Onana and Mason Mount have also proven to be huge missteps, and even Hojlund took months to settle after his move from Atalanta, after United opted to go for the youngster instead of Premier League goal king Harry Kane. It's little wonder, then, that the Red Devils are failing to put Ten Hag's philosophy into practice.

Ratcliffe's right-hand man Sir David Brailsford was present to watch United's latest abject display, and wouldn't have had anything positive to report back. There is nothing to suggest that Ten Hag is a "10 out of 10" manager right now, and the club won't properly start to move forward until he's gone.

GettyMan City could strike final blow

United's 2023-24 campaign has been a complete disaster, and nothing can change that now. There may not even be anything left to play for by the start of next week.

Ten Hag will be on the brink again if he can't guide United to the FA Cup quarter-finals at Forest's expense in midweek, which would prove once and for all his "right direction" claim is completely ludicrous. He will take his band of misfits to the Etihad Stadium four days later for a huge derby encounter against City, with 15 points currently separating the two Manchester rivals – but the gulf in class between them is far bigger than that.

United were battered 3-0 by their noisy neighbours at Old Trafford in the reverse fixture, and the final scoreline could have been far worse. City had 21 shots at goal to the home side's seven and dominated possession throughout, with Erling Haaland netting a brace before Phil Foden rounded off a comfortable victory.

Another humiliation would effectively end United's Champions League qualification hopes, and surely leave Ratcliffe with no choice but tear up Ten Hag's contract one year early.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has broken countless records down the years – while collecting league titles in England, Spain and Italy alongside five Champions League crowns – as a result of his pursuit of perfection. Ronaldo has strived for continuous improvement over the course of his remarkable career.

Mexican frontman Hernandez briefly worked alongside the Portuguese superstar at Real Madrid in 2014-15 – as Ronaldo posted a personal best goal return of 61 that season – and has been in awe of the all-time great before, during and after that stint at Santiago Bernabeu.

WHAT THEY SAID

Hernandez has told of his time in Spain working alongside one of the very best to have ever played the game: “I always divided it as the first six months being very complicated because I played practically nothing. Some unfortunate injuries arose and I was given an opportunity in the second part, which was extraordinary and unique. Cristiano was phenomenal in the locker room and also in his way of being. I don’t think I have met or seen a player, who has come out to say that Cristiano is a difficult or complicated person. Cris is Cris. We know his personality and competitiveness, but as a team-mate that is one of the things you cannot take away.”

Mexico World Cup 2022 squad: Who's in and who's out?

Who got the nod from head coach Gerardo Martino for World Cup 2022 in Qatar?

Mexico will be participating in their eighth consecutive World Cup in Qatar after finishing second in the CONCACAF qualifiers behind Canada on goal difference.

Their best performance came in the 1970 and 1986 editions respectively, when they reached the quarter-finals and incidentally they were the hosts on both occasions.

After crashing out in the round of 16 in 2018, can they go further this time around?

They have been drawn in Group C alongside favourites Argentina, Asian powerhouse Saudia Arabia, and Robert Lewandowski's Poland.

A tricky group indeed, but Tata Martino will hope that his troops can at least qualify for the knockouts and anything is possible from there on. The manager has named the 26-man squad he'll be taking to the finals.

    GOALKEEPERS

Guillermo Ochoa is likely to be the first choice for Martino in Qatar. The veteran goalkeeper has been an undisputed starter for Club America this season and knows what's required at this level.

Rodolfo Cota is a solid option as a back-up keeper as he is a regular starter with Leon and last appeared in national colours in a 3-0 win over Suriname in June 2022.

Alfredo Talavera, meanwhile, is another experienced option, who has 38 caps with the national team after making his debut in 2011.

    DEFENDERS

Tata Martino likes to stick to a traditional back four.

Mexico's backline is a mix of youth end experience as there are some veteran candidates in Hector Moreno, Nestor Araujo and Jesus Gallardo, along with some young talents like Kevin Alvarez, Jesus Angulo, and Johan Vasquez.

Angulo is a versatile player who can play as a left-back and can also slot in at centre-back. He will face stiff competition from Gerardo Arteaga and experienced defender Gallardo for a place in the starting XI.

Jorge Sanchez has been struggling for minutes at Ajax, so Alvarez might get the nod in the right-back position. The 23-year-old has been in sensational form in Liga MX for Pachuca.

    MIDFIELDERS

Hector Herrera must be one of the first names on the team sheet as the 32-year-old brings a wealth of experience after spending close to a decade in Europe plying his trade first with Porto and then with Atletico Madrid.

He will be ably supported by another veteran in Andres Guardado, the joint most-capped player in Mexico's history, as well as Ajax star Edson Alvarez.

In terms of wide players, the injury-enforced absence of Jesus 'Tecatito' Corona puts further pressure on the likes Uriel Antuna to shine opposite Chucky Lozano.
