Tottenham’s signing of Aaron Lennon a Daniel Levy masterclass

Having joined Tottenham for just £1m back in the summer of 2005 from a financially struggling Leeds, there can be no question that Aaron Lennon more than proved that he was value for money in his time in north London.

The winger became a permanent fixture in the Spurs squad, and went on to play an impressive 364 times for the Lilywhites, scoring 30 goals and providing a further 77 assists.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

He was of course part of the 2008 League Cup winning side, and his career at the club spanned the best part of nine seasons.

Now 32, and plying his trade for fellow Premier League side Burnley, Lennon had some big-time moments in a Spurs shirt, not least that memorable injury-time strike to make it 4-4 against Arsenal as Harry Redknapp’s men completed a stunning a comeback at the home of their local rivals.

He wasn’t flashy in the way of a Gareth Bale in terms of beating players with tricks, or smashing in 30-yard thunderbolts, but he was so reliably productive out on that right-hand side.

That old-school winger’s mentality of beating the man, and setting up Spurs’ strikers time and time again. One of his stand-out campaigns came in the north London side’s run in the Champions League back in the 2010/2011 season, when he racked up five assists in just nine total appearances in the competition.

He was capable of stepping up in the big moments, and at just a measly £1m, surely goes down as one of the greatest bargains of the Daniel Levy era at Spurs.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans are reminiscing over this former powerhouse.

Spurs tipped to involve themselves in bidding for Shaqiri

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent believes that Tottenham Hotspur could “take” Xherdan Shaqiri if he became available, per Football Insider.

What’s he said?

Shaqiri has played just 11 minutes in the Premier League this season and Football Insider have previously reported that he could look to leave the club in the summer.

And Bent believes that Spurs would be open to snapping him up, with Shaqiri having scored six goals and registered five assists in 30 outings last term.

He said: “I think Arsenal would probably take him, Manchester City nope, Chelsea nope, Spurs may potentially take him as well.

“I think there will be no shortage of takers so he has nothing to fear about that.”

The kind of player Spurs might need

Shaqiri is an option in attack but, at Liverpool, he is behind the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. It’s understandable that he isn’t forcing his way into Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI, while injury issues have also cost him.

Thus far this season, the Reds have won 11 games and drawn one and sit eight points clear at the top of the table; one has to imagine that Shaqiri faces a difficult task in getting back into the Anfield line-up.

At Spurs, though, Mauricio Pochettino has just Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura to call upon on the right-hand side.

To that point, he has even played Christian Eriksen on that flank once this term, and Shaqiri has a familiarity with the position, playing there 150 times throughout his career.

Bringing Shaqiri in, then, would add another dimension to the attack, and could potentially add some dynamism that is currently missing.

The former Stoke City man is left-footed, meaning cutting inside is a genuine option, while he also boasts the pace and power needed to bamboozle defenders.

While he is 28, he could get some regular game time at Spurs and add another string to their attacking bow.

Provided he were available for a decent fee, he could prove to be a bargain.

West Ham fans criticise Manuel Pellegrini for change at Turf Moor

West Ham United’s disappointing form continued on Saturday afternoon as they suffered a 3-0 defeat at Burnley in the Premier League.

The Hammers are now on a run of five matches without a league win, which is not exactly ideal form heading into their next encounter – a huge game with Tottenham Hotspur.

As expected, a number of the club’s fans were angry at head coach Manuel Pellegrini both during and after the match.

And some took exception to the manager’s second change of the match, which saw Manuel Lanzini enter the field in place of Felipe Anderson.

Anderson, according to WhoScored, did not have a single shot, make a single challenge or complete a successful dribble during his time on the field.

However, not too many could understand why Pellegrini decided to replace the Brazilian with Lanzini, who was then forced off the field in the latter stages with what looked to be a shoulder problem.

Barcelona have to make sure Jordi Alba gets some minutes vs Eibar

Barcelona have a pretty tough task ahead of them.

The Catalans have so far tallied mixed results along the way in the ongoing 2019/20 La Liga season, to say the least. But still, even with their apparent troubles, they are still second in the table, just behind the league leaders, Real Madrid, and one spot above Atletico Madrid.

Needless to say, the top three clubs in the competitions are slowly but surely regaining their dominance over the Spanish top-flight once again but even with that being said, these are still just early days and the campaign is rather long.

But even though Eibar might not seem like a big challenge for a club of Barcelona’s stature, especially considering they’re currently sitting 14th in the table with just two wins under their belts, there’s more to this small Basque team than initially meets the eye.

In fact, they are unbeaten in the last three games and have won against the likes of Sevilla and Celta Vigo while tallying a draw against Real Betis.

By all means, they are a team on the rise and their only two wins of the season have come at their home ground of Ipurua. Not to mention that Barcelona have a dodgy record away from home this season, registering only a single win on the road from five games played across all competitions so far.

With all of that in mind, they cannot take this game for granted and if they needed an additional reason to give Jordi Alba some minutes this Saturday already, they definitely got one now.

The returning Spaniard has had some difficulties with injuries as of late.

Even though he played a total of four games and managed to already score a goal in La Liga in 2019/20, a hamstring injury back in September sidelined the pacy 30-year-old for four games overall.

But now, he is finally ready to return and after his inclusion in the official squad list, Barcelona should be looking to give him some valuable minutes ahead of a tough next week.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

Alba’s presence has been sorely missed in these weeks that he had to take off.

After all, we’re talking about a player who has that special connection with Lionel Messi and a player who has a keen eye for setting up a goal from that left side of the pitch.

But even though it does sound a bit risky throwing him into the fire immediately after his return from a tricky injury, Valverde should seriously consider that option, even if it’s just a cameo appearance from the bench.

Barcelona have a mid-week Champions League clash after that game and even though El Clasico has been officially postponed to a later date, getting Alba game ready and sharp should be their priority moving forward.

The first couple of weeks in the ongoing campaign have been rather sloppy and it wouldn’t really be a stretch to say that the Catalans can’t afford any more slip-ups in the future fixtures.

Not to mention that with both Alba and Junior Firpo, his replacement, sidelined for a while, Nelson Semedo had to deputise and play on the opposite side of the pitch for a couple of games.

Luckily, the Portuguese right-back did just fine at times but now that the Spaniard is back in action, Semedo can return to his natural position opposite of Alba and Barcelona can proceed as planned.

Still, they will need their returning star to hit the ground running and for that reason, Valverde should seriously consider throwing him straight into the mix on Saturday afternoon already.

Let’s see what the Basque coach decides.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright sends supportive message Maitland-Niles and Willock

After a tough couple of weeks for Arsenal players in general, former Gunner and club legend Ian Wright has tweeted at youngsters Joe Willock, 20, and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, 22, after their part is perhaps one of the most entertaining games we’ve seen since Barcelona stepped footÂin the same arena last season. If you didn’t manage to tune into last night’s match, we are sorry. After collecting five goals apiece, a nerve-wracking penalty shootout added the cherry on top of what was already an oh-so-sweet cake, and while Arsenal came off second best against Liverpool at Anfield, their part in demonstrating why football is one of the greatest sports on the planet was priceless.Watch Arsenal Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

While Willock and Maitland-Niles haven’t been exposed to the same sort of overt criticism that teammates Granit Xhaka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have, the latter of whom was confronted by an angry fan as he waited in traffic leaving the Emirates recently, the pressure will likely still have been felt nonetheless.

Wright, who certainly knows a thing or two about pleasing the Gunners faithful, tweeted a message of support to both players Wednesday evening…

Both Maitland-Niles and Willock scored goals on the night and were rated 8.11 and 7.47 respectively by WhoScored. Impressive.

Aston Villa fans slam Neil Taylor’s performance against Burnley

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa are beginning to show that spending a lot of money in the summer does not necessarily guarantee success following promotion to the Premier League.

In all fairness, it was a problem Fulham struggled with last year, but the Midlands club’s new signings have not gelled at the start of this campaign. After seven matches, the Villans sit 18th in the table and have won just one match so far.

On Saturday, they were in action against Burnley at Villa Park in a game they would have been hoping to win. When they took the lead, twice, many inside the ground may have been liking their chances of grabbing all three points. However, the Clarets were resilient and clawed their way back on both occasions, meaning that Dean Smith and co had to settle for a draw.

There were some worrying issues in defence, and it was actually one of the players who helped get them promoted who struggled in particular. Neil Taylor played just 29 minutes, but did not help shore up the Villans’ backline when he came on.

His poor display did not go unnoticed by the club’s supporters. They took to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Roy Hodgson’s best Crystal Palace moments after two-year anniversary as manager

[long_read]

After a turbulent 77-day spell under Frank de Boer, which ended with the Dutchman overseeing four straight Premier League losses without his side scoring a goal, things looked bleak for Crystal Palace.

The out-of-work Roy Hodgson was available and swiftly appointed as De Boer’s successor on 12th September 2017, with the Eagles enjoying a rare period of stability since the former England manager’s arrival – Palace have had seven permanent managers since 2011.

The 72-year-old comfortably led the south Londoners to survival in his first season at the helm, despite Palace losing their first seven games without scoring, although there have been plenty more excellent moments under the experienced boss as we surpass his first two years in charge…

[snack_break title=”First win as Crystal Palace boss”]

What better way to start off than to recall Hodgson’s first win as manager of his boyhood club?

As aforesaid, the Eagles were on a goalless, seven-game losing spell before the champions Chelsea rocked up at Selhurst Park, but an own goal from Cesar Azpilicueta and a well-taken Wilfried Zaha effort earned Palace a shock 2-1 victory.

[snack_break title=”Biggest Premier League winning margin”]

The veteran manager guided the team he supported as a boy to their largest ever Premier League win towards the end of the 2017/18 season, with a resounding 5-0 thumping of Leicester.

Goals from Zaha, James McArthur, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Patrick van Aanholt and Christian Benteke helped make club history – a real achievement from Hodgson and his players.

[snack_break title=”Manchester City 2-3 Crystal Palace”]

Perhaps the most surprising result of last season in its entirety, let alone Hodgson’s spell as Palace boss.

The south Londoners arrived at the Etihad Stadium with nothing to lose. Pep Guardiola’s men were the reigning champions and were also the only side in the top six tiers of the English game to have a 100% home record when Palace turned up just before Christmas last year.

However, having gone behind early on, a goal from Jeffrey Schlupp, a Puskas Award nominee from Andros Townsend and a steely penalty from Luka Milivojevic earned Palace a truly unbelievable win.

[snack_break title=”Recording club-record Premier League points total”]

The 5-3 win over Bournemouth on the final day of last season saw Palace finish the campaign on 49 points, a club-record total for the Eagles in the Premier League era.

Two goals from Michy Batshuayi, an own goal from Jack Simpson, as well as strikes from van Aanholt and Townsend helped cement the impressive feat.

[snack_break title=”Historic win at Old Trafford”]

The Eagles created club and Premier League history with their 2-1 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford this season.

Jordan Ayew’s opener and van Aanholt’s last-gasp strike saw Palace record their first win over the Red Devils in the Premier League era – the Dutchman’s strike was also the first time United had conceded a stoppage-time winner at home in the Premier League.
