Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg needs more help from his midfielders

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Recently, we outlined why Pierre-Emile Højbjerg’s midfield battle with Sheffield United string-puller Oliver Norwood was crucial to the outcome of Saturday’s game.

While Højbjerg didn’t necessarily lose his individual battle despite Norwood’s impressive individual numbers from the match, the Danish midfielder needs more help from teammates such as Oriol Romeu despite their 1-0 win.

What happened at Bramall Lane?

We detailed how Højbjerg’s pressing ability would be crucial to getting a result against the Blades, winning the ball high up the pitch and taking advantage.

While it was Sofiane Boufal who nipped in for Moussa Djenepo to go on and score, Højbjerg still had a huge influence on proceedings.

The former Bayern Munich man registered three key passes and two dribbles, while also completing two tackles, two interceptions and two clearances, but Norwood and his midfield partner John Fleck’s numbers from the match prove that Romeu, James Ward-Prowse and Boufal needed to help out more

How did the trio perform?

As aforesaid, Boufal got the assist for the winner and completed 10 dribbles too, per WhoScored, so he played well – however, the Moroccan, Romeu and Ward-Prowse didn’t help Højbjerg out enough from a defensive aspect.

Romeu – Højbjerg’s midfield partner in a two – made no interceptions and no blocks, while also failing to register a key pass or complete a single dribble.

Ahead of the duo, Ward-Prowse didn’t complete a dribble or take a shot, and also made just one tackle.

In Boufal’s case, he didn’t make a single defensive action at all and was also dispossessed a game-high seven times.

Contrastingly, you can see how influential Norwood and Swift were by their statistics.

Norwood made a game-high four key passes and also made four tackles, two interceptions and three clearances, whereas Fleck took five shots, made three key passes and completed three dribbles.

Højbjerg did well to help his side come out with a 1-0 win, but the Saints risk overloading the 24-year-old against better opposition, as evidenced by the stats of his team-mates.

Rangers Ryan Kent is "worth every penny", according to Ibrox legend Ian Durrant.

Rangers legend Ian Durrant has claimed that Rangers have completed a shrewd bit of business by signing Ryan Kent for £7m and that they could make a profit when he moves on according to The Evening Times – via Football Daft Podcast.

What did he say?

Ryan Kent’s signature was secured on the last day of the transfer window for £7.5m and became Rangers second highest transfer behind the £12m paid for Tore Andre Flo. It was a transfer saga that endured the summer with Steven Gerrard making it clear from an early stage that Kent was a target and that he wanted him to return to the ibrox club.

Initially Kent’s move looked to be over as Jurgen Klopp vetoed any more loan moves and it looked as though Rangers had been priced out of a permanent move with some reports suggesting Liverpool were wanting between £8-10m.

Rangers finally got their man though and it has delighted fan’s favourite Durrant and when he was asked if his boyhood club had delivered a good value deal, he replied:

“You’re getting a young kid who’s come from a great background at Liverpool, great upbringing who just wants to play football now. He’s been part of Liverpool’s squad in pre-season but he’s wanting to come up and he’s struck up a great relationship with Steven Gerrard who I think had him in the youths.

“He wants to play for Rangers, he had opportunities to go to Leeds, Brugge. His main aim was to go play for Rangers and Steven Gerrard who has a big pull to bring players in. Rangers and Celtic are now selling clubs and if there’s an opportunity comes up players will be sold for top dollar.”

So is Durrant right?

Originally Liverpool were looking for more than the £7m figure that has been quoted in the press. There is a premium on young English talent and money is no object in both the Premier League and Championship.

Last year was Kent’s break through season and he demonstrated in the two Old Firms fixtures at Ibrox just how good a player he has the potential to be – but for a late card ruining his copy book – his performance in the final Old Firm game at Parkhead was also a stand out. Two goals and an assist in four games against Celtic highlights his ability to handle the big occasion.

Ironically it has been a piece of Celtic transfer business that could benefit Rangers in the long run. The £25m singing of Kieran Tierney by Arsenal has inflated the value of the Scottish league’s top talent and Kent was rated Young Player of the Year by both his peers and the Writers Association.

Even if he has a similar season, Kent would be able to command a fee over what Rangers have paid for him and if he was to improve then his price tag rises. As Durrant claimed, Kent wanted the move to Rangers and perhaps managed to get him cheaper as a result. With Alfredo Morelos rated by Rangers in the same bracket as Moussa Dembele who went for £19.7m, Durrant is correct to think that Rangers have picked up a steal given Kent’s importance in key fixtures and to Rangers.

Real Madrid fans can’t believe another injury has hit the squad

Another day, another Real Madrid player injured.

That’s, unfortunately for all the Madridistas around the globe, the reality of supporting the club at the moment.

Marcelo is the latest to join the list and fans just can’t believe it ahead of their opening Champions League encounter against PSG. They travel to France on Wednesday evening and will also face Club Brugge and Galatasaray in their group.

Indeed, midfielders Isco, Luka Modric and Marco Asensio are all currently sidelined, per Goal, as are Brahim Diaz and Federico Valverde. Sergio Ramos and Nacho are both suspended for the European encounter, too, adding to Zinedine Zidane’s woes.

Many supporters couldn’t take it anymore after the latest update and they did not hesitate to voice their displeasure once Real Madrid officially confirmed Marcelo’s injury.

One of them accused the club of becoming “clowns”, while another claimed they were done with supporting the Galacticos altogether.

Aston Villa fans are keen for Scott Hogan to leave amid speculation

[ad_pod ]

According to Football Insider, West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City and Bristol City are all keen on signing Aston Villa’s Scott Hogan before the transfer window closes.

Villa’s incredible summer spending will likely make it difficult for Hogan to secure first-team football at the club during the 2019/20 campaign.

The 27-year-old actually finished last season on loan at Sheffield United – helping the Blades earn promotion to the Premier League.

Hogan has managed just 10 goals in 61 appearances for Villa in all competitions, though, and his failure to find the net on a regular basis suggests he will be out of his depth in the top flight.

According to Football Insider, West Brom want to take Hogan off Villa’s hands, whilst Stoke and Bristol City are in the hunt ahead of Thursday’s deadline.

A number of Villa fans have been on social media reacting to the claim.

And it would be fair to say that the supporters are keen for Hogan to depart, as shown by the tweets below:

Newcastle United fans aren’t happy with Mike Ashley’s Daily Mail interview

[ad_pod ]

Another day and another reason for Newcastle United fans to turn on owner Mike Ashley.

On this occasion the controversial businessman was interviewed by Martin Samuel for The Daily Mail, and he was asked about a variety of different things regarding the running of the club.

Since Ashley took over, he has overlooked two relegations and one European qualification, while the Magpies are yet to lift a trophy with him at the helm.

The mood had been one lined with tinges of newfound optimism during the past two seasons under Rafa Benitez, but the Spaniard failed to agree a new deal with the club and the rising optimism was stripped away when Steve Bruce was announced as his successor.

In the exclusive interview, Ashley spoke openly about his running of the club, the mistakes he's made, the challenges he faces and the recent reports regarding a potential takeover.

It was the type of interview that was always going to attract plenty of attention amongst Newcastle fans, and they were particularly disgruntled by his comments concerning the club's inability to compete with the top-six.

His admission regarding Tottenham's shirt deal seemed to be a huge point of contention.

Here's what they had to say in response to the interview…

Celtic midfielder Olivier Ntcham set to face Neil Lennon on Monday

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has yet to speak to Olivier Ntcham since his comments made to French media but the duo are set to meet on Monday, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

What’s the story?

Ntcham gave an interview to L’Equipe last weekend, criticising the standard of opposition in Scottish football, revealing he would have rather joined Porto last summer than play for Celtic and wants to test himself in a stronger league.

It provoked criticism from Lennon and pundits such as Chris Sutton, but the midfielder has yet to get in touch with the Hoops boss or apologise.

Lennon has now revealed the Frenchman is due back to the club’s training ground on Monday and can expect to face the music.

Leigh Griffiths is ready and raring to go for Celtic next season. One fan discusses what we can expect from him in the video below…

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the Celtic manager said:

“I don’t know if it has been prompted from him or someone else. We’ll get to the bottom of it when he comes in. Olivier is due back in on Monday. I haven’t spoken to him yet.

“I don’t need to speak to him, he has to come and see me, his team-mates and the club.

“It’s a question of sitting down and having it out with him. Finding out where that came from and what his mindset is. It’s new to me.

“For him to go public about it without speaking to the club first, and for him to go public anyway, is wrong.

“He is under contract. Whether he’s unhappy or not, it shouldn’t have been made for public consumption the way that he has done it. Ntcham will be reminded of his responsibilities while he is still here.”

Can Ntcham be redeemed?

Clearly from his comments, the Ntcham situation is one that still bothers Lennon and the midfielder has been left in no doubt about what he needs to do when he arrives for training on Monday.

Apologies to his teammates and club staff appear to be on the cards if he hopes to return to the fold.

If he is intent on forcing a move then there will be realities for Celtic to deal with, but Ntcham signed a contract that runs until 2023 back in November, so they are in a strong position.

The Frenchman is talented, but his attitude appears to be below par and if he is going to be a disruptive element in the dressing room and on the training ground then the club should consider getting rid.

Badiashile could find it a struggle to get into the Wolves side if he signs

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Wolves have had an extremely quiet transfer window so far with the club deciding to sit back and relax a little compared to some of their Premier League rivals.

Out of the door has gone Helder Costa who has departed for Leeds on loan but as far as incomings go, there hasn’t been any activity.

Jeff Shi has recently made comments regarding the club’s future in which he stated Wolves would need to invest and bring through young talent.

We’ve already stated how centre-back target Benoit Badiashile fits into that category after being linked to the club by L’Equipe, but would he actually make an instant impact?

On the chalkboard

Badiashile is one of the finest young defenders in France, something that can be exemplified by the fact he played 20 times for Monaco in Ligue 1 last term.

At the age of 18 he is very much one for the future but as the Midlands outfit head into a new season where perhaps players with European pedigree should be thought about, he wouldn’t exactly fit the bill.

Yet it’s also difficult to see how he may actually fit into the starting line-up. In the past, we’ve documented how Ryan Bennett could be under threat if a central defender joins but as far as his stats go, both he and Willy Boly outclass Badiashile.

The £8.1m-rated centre half is cool in possession, completing 89.5% of his passes in 2018/19, but beyond that it’s difficult to establish what he’d offer, especially to a three-man defence that was so trusted by Nuno Santo last term – Conor Coady played every minute in the Premier League, while Boly and Bennett were third and sixth respectively in the squad when it came to time on the pitch.

Coady had quite low stats but playing as the middle centre-back, most of the work was left to his two main defensive partners in terms of tackling and interceptions.

Gareth Bale to Wolves? Wolves Fan TV discuss how ambitious Nuno Espirito Santo will be this summer in the video below…

Wolves’ captain only made 0.8 tackles per game whilst the same number was averaged in terms of interceptions. Boly, however, made over 2 tackles and interceptions per game whilst Bennett managed 1.7 and 1.3 respectively.

Badiashile’s statistics were worse, making just 1.3 challenges every match and completing a further 1.1 interceptions.

Although he could well be a star in the future, at the current moment in time, he wouldn’t be a direct upgrade on what they already have.

If Wolves could play him as a middle centre-back it would perhaps be more beneficial, but it’s highly unlikely that Coady would switch positions.

Celtic fans are excited about Leigh Griffiths’ return this summer

[ad_pod ]

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths believes he is closing in on a return to Hoops action, speaking in a new interview with the club’s official website this week.

The forward, who was signed by Neil Lennon during the manager’s first spell at the club, will be joining his teammates for pre-season training in mid-June and he can’t wait to try and force his way back into Lennon’s first-team plans.

The Scotland international took a break from the game in December to focus on personal problems but is putting in the hard work to make an impact next season.

Check out Keith from C’mon the Hoops’ fascinating video on the origins of the Old Firm derby below…

As quoted by CelticFC.net, he said: “The way I’ve been training, and what I’m doing just now, will have me fitter than I have been in the past. It’s about maintaining that fitness throughout pre-season and making sure I do everything right. The hunger is probably greater now than it ever has been.”

It’s a great attacking boost for Celtic, who have been without credible back-up for Odsonne Edouard for a number of months now.

Griffiths has hit 104 goals for the club in a hugely successful career so far and is the kind of player you’d always back to get on the scoresheet whether starting matches or coming off the bench.

Fans are excited about his return, taking to Twitter on Thursday to share their thoughts…
