West Ham eyeing Lingard alternative

West Ham United have their sights set on an alternative signing to Jesse Lingard this summer…

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Express, the Irons have identified West Brom star Matheus Pereira as a potential target should they not seal the 28-year-old on a permanent deal from Manchester United.

The East London side aren’t the only one eyeing the Brazilian playmaker, with Premier League rivals Leicester City and Leeds United also keen along with Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.

His asking price is likely to exceed £20m, according to Baggies reporter Joseph Chapman, who wrote in a recent BirminghamLive column: “He’s got the majority of his career, you’d like to think, ahead of him. You’d be disappointed if the club weren’t asking for £20-25m for him.”

Lingard alternative

Lingard’s future at the London Stadium is shrouded in mystery heading into the summer and according to the Daily Mail, the Hammers may struggle to meet his salary demands for a four-year deal in the region of £100k-per-week.

The 28-year-old has undoubtedly been a revelation to David Moyes and his squad, providing nine goals and three assists in just 13 appearances but you do have to wonder if he can keep it up without that point to prove next season as these have been his best returns in the Premier League for quite some time.

It is also likely to cost the Irons around the same amount of money at £25m.

£25m on a 28-year-old or £25m on a 25-year-old? The latter is certainly going to give GSB more bang for their buck, even potentially earning them some profit in the future.

Perhaps West Ham should be considering a move for Pereira instead.

In a struggling Albion squad, he has delivered ten goals and five assists, proving he is more than capable in the English top-flight following an impressive debut campaign and continuing on from 24 goal contributions in the Championship last term.

He would also offer Moyes plenty of versatility, having been deployed through the middle and out wide.

Interestingly, the £18m-rated dynamo is proving to be a more creative influence than Lingard, too. He has averaged 1.8 key passes per game compared to the England international’s 0.9.

Earlier this season, Jermaine Jenas waxed lyrical about his ability, claiming to Match of the Day: “He’s just silky. When he’s on it, he’s just got that lovely left-foot.”

This has echoed the sentiments of Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards, who heaped praise on Pereira back in September.

“I watched him a lot in the Championship last season, wondering if he can do it in the Premier League, and he showed me in the last couple of games that he definitely can. He’s just an absolute delight to watch,” he said.

Also once lauded as a “genius,” the Baggies sensation would certainly be a viable alternative to Lingard and given his performances this season and cheaper wages (around £30k-per-week), he could even be the better long-term option to target in the summer.

Liverpool fans bemoan Mohamed Salah update

A number of Liverpool supporters have been bemoaning the news that Mohamed Salah’s 2021/22 season could be disrupted for a number of reasons.

The Egyptian has arguably been the one shining light during a dreadful season at Anfield, continuing to perform at a high level since September. Salah has scored 29 goals, in all competitions, carrying the attack and netting more than double second-placed Sadio Mane’s tally of 13, which speaks volumes about his influence.

The hope is that the 28-year-old stays put this summer, and although some comments from him have suggested otherwise, it does look likely that he will remain a Liverpool player moving forward.

However, it looks as though the Reds will have to do without Salah for a chunk of next season due to Olympics and Africa Cup of Nations commitments, as per The Athletic’s James Pearce [via Anfield Watch on Twitter].

Nketiah: West Ham’s next Defoe?

West Ham United have been given a big boost in their pursuit of Eddie Nketiah, according to reports…

What’s the word?

The Evening Standard’s Jack Rosser claims the Irons have been given hope of securing a deal for the 21-year-old Arsenal youngster this summer after the north London outfit secured Folarin Balogun to a new long-term contract extension.

It’s thought that West Ham have been tracking Nketiah since January, where they had a loan approach knocked back but he’s now expected to drop down the pecking order, especially given mooted interest in Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard, who the Hammers have also been linked to recently.

At the end of the season, the England U21 international will be in the final year of his contract, so it leaves the Gunners with a decision to make.

It remains to be seen how much Nketiah would command with CIES Football Observatory currently valuing him at €30m (£26m).

Shades of Defoe

The report goes onto suggest that David Moyes is a huge admirer of the Arsenal gem as he sees him as someone that could fit his energetic style of play and would be hungry to prove himself – very much in a similar nature to that of Michail Antonio.

But it’s another one-time Hammers goalscorer that he draws further comparisons to, and it should have many at the London Stadium brimming with excitement.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-west-ham-news-and-views” title=”Latest West Ham news, views and gossip!”]

Moyes and GSB could well find West Ham’s next Jermain Defoe in Nketiah.

“He reminds me of another Jermaine Defoe and look at how well he did at West Ham,” explained Noel Whelan to Football Insider. “He’s very much that similar sort of player. He plays off the shoulder, very dangerous in the box. He’s a player you can’t take your eye off because his movement’s so good.”

The 38-year-old is still plying his trade for Scottish champions Rangers and his career was truly kickstarted in east London, where he proved to be a prolific sensation, top-scoring with ten goals in his debut season in the Premier League aged just 19. He then went onto bag eight in the next season, and 11 goals in 19 appearances in the old First Division, as per Transfermarkt.

Nketiah may be a little further along at 21 but he has found game time hard to come by at the Emirates Stadium, though his record for the Three Lions is impeccable with 16 goals from 17 caps, and that’s caught the eye of Michael Owen, who knows a thing or two about scoring himself.

The former Liverpool striker lauded the young forward a “goal machine,” something that the Irons have felt this term themselves as he bagged the winner back in September from the bench – his only league strike so far this campaign.

Signing a new striker should absolutely be Moyes’ top priority this summer and making a splash for Nketiah could prove to be a shrewd decision as not only will he fill a glaring void but he’ll also get a 5 foot 11 nuisance that’s perfect for his system.

GSB must stump up the cash for Nketiah at the end of the season.

KLD must not repeat Donald error with Wyke

Sunderland centre-forward Charlie Wyke is attracting the interest of a number of Championship clubs this summer, according to reports.

What’s been said?

Football League World claim that Cardiff City are leading the race to sign the striker on a free transfer this summer, with Middlesbrough also thought to be keeping tabs on the 28-year-old ahead of a potential move.

The Sky Sports journalist, Keith Downie, also recently reported that, as well as Boro and Cardiff, both Millwall and Nottingham Forest are also interested in a deal for the Sunderland star, whose contract at the Stadium of Light is set to expire at the end of the season.

Louis-Dreyfus must not repeat Donald’s mistake

Wyke has undeniably been the star of Sunderland’s season so far, with the former Bradford City hitman bagging 25 goals and providing three assists over his 42 League One appearances for the Black Cats, as well as averaging a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.35 – ranking him as the club’s best performer in the third tier.

As such, it is hardly surprising to read that a number of Championship sides are keen ona move for the striker, particularly as, at present, the 28-year-old will be available on a free transfer, with Sunderland yet to agree terms on a new deal with the forward.

It is possible that Wyke is waiting to make a decision on his future until it becomes clear in which league Lee Johnson’s side will be playing their football next season, as the Black Cats – barring a catastrophic collapse – appear to be one of the four sides who will enter the League One play-offs at the end of the regular season.

However, regardless of whether or not Sunderland gain promotion, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus should learn from the mistake of his predecessor, Stewart Donald – who sold Josh Maja in a self-proclaimed “ridiculous” deal, shortly before the striker’s contract expired – regarding the situation of Wyke.

In short, Louis-Dreyfus should offer the £6,000-per-week star, who Lynden Gooch dubbed a “brilliant” player, a new deal that he simply cannot refuse prior to the transfer window opening, as, without his goals this season, Sunderland would not be anywhere near the play-off places. They’ll need him to either help them stay in the Championship next season or make another promotion push.

Almiron fuels Newcastle exit speculation

Steve Bruce should look to unleash Matty Longstaff following the international break in the hopes of convincing Miguel Almiron to stay at Newcastle United for the long-term.

What’s the word?

Speaking with Paraguayan radio station ABC Cardinal on Friday, Almiron fuelled speculation that he could look to secure a move away from St James’ Park in the near future.

The 27-year-old has admitted that he would like to play for a club who carry a greater fight in their performances, as he became the latest Toon player to seemingly criticise recent results.

Ciaran Clark had revealed earlier in the week that the United squad “weren’t up for it” during last weekend’s 3-0 mauling by relegation rivals Brighton & Hove Albion, as the Magpies’ torrid run of form stretched to two wins in 18 Premier League games.

Almiron has now fuelled speculation that he may look to secure a move away from Tyneside after his agent Daniel Campos claimed the midfielder would already have been sold amid interest from Atletico Madrid had it not been for the global pandemic.

“I would like to play in a team that fights more,” Almiron said. “Here, I am happy, and I feel comfortable.”

Campos had noted earlier in the season that Almiron may look to join a team who play a different brand of football than Newcastle, and could chase a transfer in June.

“Miguel’s work rate at Newcastle and Paraguay has been great,” Campos told Futgol 970 in November, via quotes shared by Chronicle Live. “If it wasn’t for the pandemic, he would’ve been elsewhere. Perhaps he would like to play on a team that has a lot of possession. Maybe in June, he’ll make that jump.”

Time to unleash Longstaff?

Almiron claiming that he would like to play in a side which carries more fight, just after Clark admitted that Newcastle rolled over against Brighton, will be a bitterly concerning update for Bruce.

Newcastle have established themselves as a team which plays on the back foot throughout the Premier League season, with relegation rivals West Bromwich Albion the only side to have averaged a lower share of possession per game (41.4%) than the Magpies (42%) to date.

Only Burnley (71.6%) and the Baggies (73.1%) retain possession at a lower standard than the Toon, who hold a 75.3% pass success rate, while Bruce’s men rank 14th in the division for tackles made per game with 14, per WhoScored.

All the indications point to a style of football not to Almiron’s preference, but Bruce can look to impress the Paraguayan coming out of the international break by unleashing Longstaff to add more bite to the engine room.

Longstaff has only played 377 minutes in the Premier League this season, despite Bruce assuring the 21-year-old of his path to the first team last summer and many considering the academy graduate to be the aggressive presence which Newcastle currently lack.

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson also claimed that Longstaff “would be a good addition for any team” last summer amid the midfielder’s contract stand-off, while later noting that he is already a “top player” but is “going to go on to become a better player”.

However, Longstaff’s development has stagnated massively this season due to his limited chances under Bruce, but he will still be expected to add bite to the engine room against Tottenham Hotspur next Sunday and show Almiron what some in the Newcastle squad are capable of producing.

AND in other news, Newcastle are closely monitoring a £13.5k-p/w dud who’s “been caught out” this season…

King can leave Everton

Many Everton fans have been left to slam Josh King as Football Insider have reported that they are set to snub a long-term deal for the Norway international.

As per the news outlet, the Goodison Park faithful are set to pursue other transfer targets in the forward area in the summer window, with Carlo Ancelotti deciding not to take up the option of signing King permanently.

The former AFC Bournemouth man has still not yet started a game for the Merseyside club since his move in January, and has only played in a mere eight matches in total in the Premier League (Transfermarkt).

Thus, with him not getting much time on the pitch, it may be a wise idea by the Toffees to potentially look at bringing in other strikers.

These Blues slammed King upon learning of the transfer update on Twitter, with one EFC supporter even going as far to claim that he has been ‘non-existent’:

Tottenham eyeing Jannik Vestergaard

According to a report by The Mirror, Jose Mourinho is eyeing a move for Southampton colossus Jannik Vestergaard this summer as he makes the signing of a central defender a top priority – and it’s Tottenham’s belief they can land themselves a bargain as the 6 foot 6 powerhouse enters the final year of his contract.

Jose eyeing Vestergaard

The Denmark international is reportedly a wanted man by Mourinho after a solid season, with Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl arguably missing him when he was reduced to the sidelines through injury.

As per The Mirror, Tottenham have been very impressed with everything Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has brought to the club and could wish to swoop for another bargain addition from the south coast club.

It is reported that Mourinho personally believes Vestergaard could bring the desired surety in defence which Spurs have arguably lacked at times this season, and Tottenham view him as a possible bargain given his contract situation.

Transfer Tavern take

It’s hard not to see why the Lilywhites boss is a fan judging by recent plaudits, with Martin Keown likening Vestergaard to Virgil van Dijk in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT.

As well as this, former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood hailed the 28-year-old as ‘outstanding’ for his Southampton contribution this season when speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday at the end of January (via HITC).

The giant Dane has won 3.6 headers per game this season, the most of any Saints player and more than anyone in Spurs’ squad.

Time will tell whether Mourinho manages to land Vestergaard in the summer, but he certainly seems interested and could be a decent addition
