Spurs fans react to Jan Vertonghen contract latest

According to the Telegraph, via Tribal Football, Tottenham Hotspur have opened negotiations with centre-back Jan Vertonghen over a contract extension with his current deal set to expire soon, and supporters have been reacting to the news on social media this week.

It’s claimed that the 33-year-old veteran is attracting interest from the likes of Ajax and both Milan clubs, but Jose Mourinho isn’t prepared to give up on the Belgian just yet.

Talks have now resumed over the prospect of a new 12-month deal.

This decision could have been made given the off-the-field situation and other reports suggesting that the north Londoners will have a rather minuscule transfer budget as a result.

Vertonghen has played 26 times in all competitions this season, taking his total for the club to 311 appearances after originally joining the club back in 2012 from Ajax.

But do the fans want to see him stay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?

Here’s how they have been reacting to the fresh report…

Leeds looking in the wrong areas amid GK pursuit

Leeds United have been linked to yet another goalkeeper ahead of the summer transfer window, but given the imminent problems facing Marcelo Bielsa, Victor Orta should direct his attention elsewhere.

According to TuttoB, the west Yorkshiremen will battle Premier League outfit Arsenal for the signature of Atalanta shot-stopper Marco Carnesecchi at the end of the season.

The 19-year-old stands at 6 foot 4 inches and has been touted to have a “great career” by Chievo Verona’s Salvatore Esposito.

Hilariously obscure Premier League players – Can you name them all?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Carnesecchi has picked up caps for Italy U20 level, and while he may well be a viable option for Bielsa in the future, it’s not something they particularly need – or at least not yet, anyway.

The club have already been linked with a permanent move for loan stopper Illan Meslier whilst it is thought Bournemouth glovesman Aaron Ramsdale is also high on their shortlist.

Throw in current first-choice Kiko Casilla, who remains under contract and January arrival Elia Caprile, then you’re talking about nearly a handful of options for just one spot between the sticks.

It all seems very bizarre, especially as the centre-back and striker roles will be more pressing areas for the Argentine to solve.

This summer, Leeds are set to lose loan star Ben White back to Brighton and Hove Albion while Gaetano Berardi is out of contract, which means the only senior player will be skipper Liam Cooper.

Bielsa’s defence is ranked the best in the second tier right now having recorded 17 clean sheets, and seeing two key members of that backline depart is surely going to have some sort of effect.

While behind Patrick Bamford in attack is just one player, another loan man in Jean-Kevin Augustin, so there’s a case to be made there too.

Therefore, Orta is barking up the wrong tree by scouting all of these goalkeepers. His attention simply must turn to other positions first.

West Ham loanee Josh Cullen appears to have caught Manuel Pellegrini’s attention

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Loan Watch series, which takes a closer look at those players who are aiming to galvanise their careers away from the spotlight of their parent club.

There has been plenty of talk surrounding Grady Diangana and whether West Ham United will recall him from West Bromwich Albion in January.

When Manuel Pellegrini was speaking about the 21-year-old, he dropped in a compliment about his fellow academy graduate Josh Cullen, as quoted by the club’s official channels: “I think that Grady Diangana is doing what we wanted for him, the same as Josh Cullen, players that without any doubt will be a big part of West Ham in the future.”

This comment is interesting, especially in regard to the Republic of Ireland international, due to the fact that his current deal at London Stadium is set to come to an end in the summer of 2020.

When he was loaned out to Charlton Athletic, it felt as though the 23-year-old was being given little chance to prove that he should play in claret and blue, but this indicates he has done enough at The Valley to force his way into the manager’s thinking.

So far this season, Cullen has made 15 Championship starts, scoring 1 goal and assisting once – with his strike coming from an emphatically converted penalty to earn a draw against Diangana’s West Brom.

He has made an impact all over the pitch throughout the campaign, as indicated by the statistics shown above; indeed, it would be fair to describe him as an all-action midfielder.

What will also be encouraging is that the academy graduate has never given up on the idea of making it into the Hammers’ first-team, as he was quoted by The South London Press (via London News online) stating: “I’ve said all along, I’ve had my fair share of loan spells now and I’ve always stated the end goal is to play for West Ham.

“I’m striving for that and the only way I can do that is to keep playing for Charlton and performing well and hopefully I can catch the eye of people at West Ham.”

The 23-year-old will have also helped himself with his showing on the international stage, having earned the Man of the Match award and plaudits of Mick McCarthy on his Republic of Ireland debut in September, as reported by The 42: “Ultimately the result pleased me. There were some really good performances. Josh Cullen deserved the man of the match, he was excellent.”

This is now Cullen’s fifth loan move away from West Ham and he will surely be hoping this is the one that finally allows him to force his way into the club’s first-team plans.

Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira deserves more playing time after League Cup display

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Arsenal and Liverpool produced a thriller at Anfield in the fourth round of the League Cup.

Many will remember the 4-4 draw between the two sides in 2009, with Andrey Arshavin bagging four goals. On Wednesday night, both sides went one better, with the final score ending 5-5 before the Reds won in a penalty shootout.

Watch the moment Granit Xhaka’s Arsenal career may have come to an ugly end in the video below…

Unai Emery made a lot of changes to the side that drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace last weekend, and one of those to be given a starting berth was Uruguay international Lucas Torreira. The 23-year-old impressed in the middle of the park, and may have given his boss something to think about in the future.

First and foremost, he got himself on the scoresheet, which will have caught the eye of most watching him. But there were plenty of other positives on Merseyside against the European champions.

He lost possession just six times, which was the joint-lowest of any outfield player who started the match, whilst he also managed to win 55.5% of the ground duels he contested.

His 84% pass accuracy was only bettered by Joe Willock and Mesut Ozil amongst his teammates as well, which showed he was calm and confident in possession.

Defensively, he did make just one tackle, but was also dribbled past just once despite Jurgen Klopp’s side having 67% possession.

All in all, it was a good showing from the former Sampdoria man, and Unai Emery should be considering playing him on a more regular basis. So far this season, the £49.5m-valued (as per Transfermarkt) midfielder has started just two Premier League games, with Granit Xhaka being one of those regularly fancied ahead of him.

The Switzerland international, of course, has recently grabbed the headlines for all the wrong reasons following the unsavoury incident against the Eagles last Sunday.

As such, his future in north London looks under serious threat at the moment. According to Sky Deutschland, the Gunners are interested in taking Borussia Monchengladbach 22-year-old Denis Zakaria to the Emirates Stadium, who could act as Xhaka’s replacement.

However, with the 27-year-old’s position surely under threat, Emery has his alternative in midfield right under his nose in Torreira.

Why spend millions on a new face when the popular 21-cap man has the ability to do a great job in the middle of the park? He deserves his chance to shine and, on this display, there is no reason why he shouldn’t be given that opportunity.

Exclusive: Tony Cottee has branded Cluade Puel uninspiring and praised Brendan Rodgers

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast on behalf of the London Football Awards, Tony Cottee has branded Claude Puel uninspiring and praised Brendan Rodgers for the impact he has had so far at Leicester City.

The Frenchman was in charge at the King Power Stadium from October 2017 to February 2019, finishing ninth in his first season and leaving the club 12th when he departed, as reported by BBC Sport at the time.

There was a feeling that he was unable to get the best out of the players he had at his disposal, with Jamie Vardy perhaps being an example of this as the England international went through various goal droughts under Puel, with some of them lasting four games at a time, as per Transfermarkt.

Puel’s time as manager of the Foxes had led Cottee to question him: “I don’t know Claude Puel, but he looked to me quite an uninspiring manager. So, whether that played a part in it where he just wasn’t saying the right things for Jamie or playing the team in the correct way.”

There are no such questions surrounding Rodgers though, as he currently has Leicester third in the league, while Vardy is the Premier League’s top scorer following his hat-trick in the record-breaking 9-0 win against Southampton.

Cottee has been full of praise for the current Leicester boss: “I’m a big fan of Brendan Rodgers and he’s a nice man. First and foremost he’s a really good coach, he’s getting the best out of these Leicester players, they’re working hard for each other, they’re playing some great football and when you’re playing full of confidence, you then create the chances and when you’re getting lots of chances that’s all you can ask for really.”

The former Leicester striker feels that both Vardy and Leicester are seeing the benefits of having him in charge: “Jamie’s been banging the goals in again this season and as I’ve said, Leicester have got a real good chance of getting in the top six this year.”

It is difficult to argue with Cottee’s standpoint on how Leicester will do under Rodgers, especially when their start to the season is considered. After smashing Southampton 9-0 on Friday night, they’re now up to third in the Premier League.

Tony Cottee was speaking as a judge on The London Football Awards, due to take place on 5th March 2020 at Camden’s Roundhouse. Tickets are available from https://

Southampton fans criticise Angus Gunn after Chelsea loss

Southampton are now only outside of the Premier League relegation zone on goal difference following their 4-1 home defeat to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

The Saints actually started quite well against Frank Lampard’s side but conceded the first goal in the 17th minute courtesy of a finish from Tammy Abraham.

The referee needed goal-line technology to confirm that Abraham’s effort had crossed the line with Maya Yoshida doing his best to clear.

Angus Gunn hardly covered himself in glory as the goalkeeper came to confront Abraham and ended up getting nowhere near the ball.

To be honest, there might not even have been a chance for the Chelsea forward had the Southampton goalkeeper not decided to leave his goal.

Gunn also dropped a clanger in the defeat to Bournemouth last month, and it seems that the club’s fans are fast losing patience with the 23-year-old.

Indeed, many of the Southampton supporters took to social media during the defeat to Chelsea to criticise the Englishman.

Arsenal fans stick up for Shkodran Mustafi amid criticism

Arsenal fans have been supporting Shkodran Mustafi after the defender responded to the heavy criticism that he has received, including being labelled as the “king of the blunders” by 1998 World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit.Mustafi, 27, spoke openly about his time at Arsenal and the onslaught that came from both fans and pundits before losing his place in Unai Emery’s starting line-up.During an interview with Der Speigel, the German defender revealed that he found it difficult to comprehend being criticised by an ex-player in Petit, while he was also voted as the second-worst defender in the world by Marca, per the Metro.

Arsenal fans were quick to stick up for their player, who joined from Valencia for £35m in 2016.

One fan said that he will always support him and that he comes across as a great family man. Another supporter stated that Mustafi is human and that mistakes are part and parcel of the game.

Everton’s Djibril Sidibe should get chance to impress against Manchester City

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Everton face a huge task to pick up their third win of the Premier League season when Manchester City visit Goodison Park on Saturday, so it is in many ways a free hit for Marco Silva.

As a result, the Portuguese manager should use the opportunity to test out a new signing who so far hasn’t had too many opportunities to impress in the first team.

That player is Djibril Sidibe, who has been confined to featuring only in the League Cup due to captain Seamus Coleman occupying the right-back slot. However, so far this season he has sometimes failed to impress, which could lead to him losing his place in the team.

Sidibe is still settling in and will need game time to improve his fitness and adjust to the English game, and Manchester City could be the perfect opponent, with anything other than a loss a massive bonus.

However, he has achieved success against Pep Guardiola’s team in the past, when at Monaco, and if he can put in the same type of performance as he did in those two Champions League matches in 2017 then he could come out as the victor once again.

A key reason for that is his ability to read the game and that should prevent Manchester City exploiting Everton out wide with their through balls that often prove so effective, utilising the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva to supply crosses into the box.

His seven interceptions from his two Carabao Cup matches underlines that ability, but he will have to step up his game further against the champions, having so far only played against teams outside of the top-flight.

If Sidibe impresses he could earn himself a regular berth in the side, particularly as Coleman has failed to impress in attacking areas this season, with a crossing accuracy of just 47%, an underwhelming return for a player who has to provide most of the Toffees’ width on the right side, as Richarlison often looks to get into the box.

Tottenham fans are loving links to French wonderkid Eduardo Camavinga

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham are one of several teams linked with a move for French sensation Eduardo Camavinga, and fans are desperate to make this one happen.

Spurs had a productive summer, bringing in four new faces, three of which are expected to make an immediate impact on the first-team.

Fans are already eyeing up another though, after reports claimed there is a major tussle going on for Camavinga.

The 16 year-old wowed spectators as he dropped a midfield master-class against PSG this weekend, guiding his Rennes side to a shock 2-1 win, and The Daily Mail claim Manchester City and Arsenal are alongside the Lilywhites in the race for his signature.

The report says the trio are “hot on the trail” of the wonderkid, who broke onto the scene last season, and has already racked up ten first-team appearances for Rennes, despite not turning 17 until November.

Fans are loving these links, as you can see from the Twitter reactions down below…
