Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior receives huge praise from Ronaldinho

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Ronaldinho is one of the universally beloved former stars in the world of football. And even though he is also part of the Barcelona faithful, having spent the best years of his career at the Catalan club, recently, in a pre-match press conference ahead of an exhibition game, the Brazilian talked about Real Madrid’s 19-year-old talent, as reported by EFE (via Marca).

What did he say?

It’s strange seeing a Barcelona legend talked extensively about a big Real Madrid talent but the thing that connects Ronaldinho to Vinicius Junior is their nationality.

Both the young star and the retired veteran are Brazilians and it doesn’t really come as a surprise to hear the now 39-year-old ex-Blaugrana icon shower Los Blancos’ talent with such praise.

Ronaldinho mentioned how Vinicius is already playing for a big club and then went on to say he will become one of the world’s best in the not so distant future.

Here’s what he said in full:

“[Vinicius] is already at one of the best clubs in the world. I think he will soon be there, among the best.”

A hidden gem

Vinicius had a rocky start to his Real Madrid career, to say the least.

After a brilliant first season in which he managed to score seven goals and assist a further 13, it unfortunately all went downhill for the young talent.

Of course, a big part of that was actually an unlucky injury as Vinicius was sidelined by a ruptured knee ligament, making him miss out on nine games in total and more importantly, stopping his red-hot form altogether.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

And he’s been struggling to truly reach those heights once again.

In the ongoing 2019/20 season, the Brazilian has only managed to accumulate 313 minutes in a total of seven games across all competitions so far, scoring one goal and assisting another in the process.

And sure enough, when his form went down and he started struggling, the alarm bells were all ringing in the media for quite a while.

But Ronaldinho seems to believe Vinicius is destined for greatness and if the 2018/19 campaign and his stint at Flamengo, during which he scored ten goals and assisted four in 49 games, are any indication, the talent and the potential are certainly there.

Real Madrid have a true gem on their hands and it will be up to them to groom him properly so he can become one of the best players in the world.

Ronaldinho seems to believe that is possible so why shouldn’t Real Madrid believe it as well?

Former Leeds man Ben Parker missing one crucial thing on Kiko Casilla

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Let’s not paper over the cracks with all this talk.

Former Leeds United defender Ben Parker believes that Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla has finally got used to playing in English football.

What’s he said?

Speaking to Yorkshire Evening Post, he mentioned how there isn’t as much panic when he wanders outside his box as there was last season:

“Any keeper you see outside his area, everyone has a little panic. Even as a player, you’re thinking he has to get there. Kiko’s starting positions this season have been so much better than last year.

“At times he’s been a touch deeper, he’s reading the game better, he’s adjusted to the speed of the Championship and when he has to come out.

“He hasn’t done it every game and that decision making has been crucial. That says to me he’s adjusted to the league, he looks a more solid all-round goalkeeper.”

That’s not strictly true though, is it?

Whilst Parker talks about what he brings to the table in terms of his style of play when he comes off his line, there is still one thing that should concern Leeds when it comes to the Spaniard, and it concerns what he does on it.

Casilla was no stranger to the odd gaffe last season, with his errors in games against Sheffield United and Derby County, the latter in the play-off semi-final being chief amongst them.

Whilst he may be among one of the better goalkeepers this season in terms of clean sheets, leading the way with five, the fact of the matter is that he still hasn’t eradicated all mistakes from his game and they have the potential to cost Leeds throughout the season.

His ‘flap’ at the first goal during their Carabao Cup defeat to Stoke City and his half-hearted punch for Charlton Athletic’s winner show that there is still a disaster waiting to happen at any moment.

Do Leeds need to invest in a new goalkeeper? No, not just yet.

However, if these errors aren’t eradicated quickly, the decision to go with him over Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the summer could end up haunting them.

Flashback: N’Golo Kante continues to show Chelsea how valuable he is to them

In our latest instalment of theÂFlashbackÂseries, we take a look back at a certain moment and look at how things might have changed those initial reactions.

When Chelsea signed N’Golo Kante from Leicester City for a transfer fee believed to be in the region of £30m in the summer of 2016, many would have felt it was a steal at the time, however the France international has continued to impress and star in the middle of the Blues’ side.

Having impressed for the Foxes in his one season at the King Power Stadium with figures of 4.7 tackles, 4.2 interceptions and 1.5 clearances in the 37 games he played on their way to the Premier League title (per WhoScored), it was, perhaps, quite understandable as to why those in SW6 were extremely excited about what they were getting.

Here are just some of the reactions those fans had at the time…

The defensive midfielder has become a star for the Blues as he enters the fourth year of his Stamford Bridge tenure and he has continued to show his importance and significance to Frank Lampard’s side with his recent performances – something the manager highlighted following the defeat to Liverpool in the Super Cup.

As quoted byÂThe London Evening Standard, he said: “Kante is an amazing player, amazing character. He’s a machine on the football field. He hasn’t trained much, had a swollen ankle two days ago, but he was desperate to play and you saw what he gave to the team today. He will be hugely important. I am delighted to work with him.â€

Indeed, he stepped up against Liverpool once again in their most recent encounter in the Premier League, whereby he scored the Blues’ only goal of the game and appeared to have a stormer of a game – WhoScored gave him a 7.76 match rating, which was the best of anyone involved in the match.

There is no doubting that Kante is crucial to Chelsea and, arguably, has become the club’s most important player following Eden Hazard’s summer departure to Real Madrid, although, admittedly, the duo offer different things on the pitch.

The France World Cup winner has seen his game go up another level with each year that passes (taking just the Premier League competition into consideration). In 2016/17, the 28-year-old managed to achieve an average of 3.6 tackles, 2.4 interceptions and 1.2 clearances every game he was involved in.

2017/18 saw Kante produce an incredible 3.3 tackles, 2.5 interceptions and 0.8 clearances in the 34 outings he had in Antonio Conte’s final year in charge of the SW6 outfit.

In 2018/19, he managed to record an average of 2.1 tackles per match in his 36 Premier League appearances last season, as well as 1.2 interceptions, although he was largely played out of position under Maurizio Sarri.

Indeed, there have been comparisons between him and compatriot Claude Makelele and it would not be hard to suggest those are warranted, despite Football BH claiming it ‘lazy’ whilst the ex-Blue did not agree with them either (Reuters via the Independent).

The former Chelsea man managed to achieve an exceptional success rate of 82% when making a tackle when in Premier League action, making 55 interceptions and providing the Blues with 99 clearances whilst he never made an error that led to a goal being scored (official Premier League website).

Chelsea, essentially, stole Kante away from Leicester for £30m, however he has continued to show just how important of a player he is to the Stamford Bridge outfit and it turned out to be a very clever piece of business by Marina Granovskaia, Roman Abramovich and co.

Chelsea fans, how important has Kante become since signing from Leicester? Let us know your thoughts by sharing them in the comments section below!

Aston Villa fans hail Bjorn Engels after mammoth display against Everton

[ad_pod ]

One of a number of signings this summer following Aston Villa’s promotion to the Premier League, Bjorn Engels has found himself at the heart of defence alongside Tyrone Mings.

The 24-year-old arrived from French side Reims in a reported £9m deal and was immediately thrown into the deep end by Dean Smith for Villa’s opening two Premier League games of the season.

Despite seeing the side fall to successive defeats, Smith kept faith in the 6 foot 4 ace and he duly rewarded his manager with an imperious performance against Everton on Friday night.

The Belgian registered a team-high three aerial duels won and put his body on the line multiple times with three blocked shots too.

After seeing the centre-back lay everything down for the cause against the Toffees, Villa fans took to Twitter to marvel at the 24-year-old’s display.

Many supporters of the Midlands side looked back fondly to a moment in the game when he appeared to celebrate a superb block with a fist pump.

Indeed, some fans made comparisons between Engels and former club stalwarts Martin Laursen and Olof Mellberg, and one insisted he is “exactly the sort of CB” the side have been waiting for.

How Tottenham Hotspur could line up during 2019/20 PL opener

[long_read]

Tottenham Hotspur kick off the Premier League season at home against Aston Villa.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side, of course, reached the Champions League final in 2018/19 and also finished fourth in the top-flight, but they will surely be out to launch an assault on the title this time around.

Indeed, they have already broken their transfer record once to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon and are being linked with more new arrivals: Giovani Lo Celso of Real Betis, Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon and Juventus star Paulo Dybala are all said to be targets.

There could be plenty of upheaval to the starting XI that served Spurs so well last term, then, with Kieran Trippier the first to leave and Danny Rose also seemingly closing in on a departure.

Christian Eriksen’s future remains up in the air, too, after he confirmed he could leave earlier this summer, while Toby Alderweireld’s  £25m release clause expired last week.

There are a number of options then, for Pochettino to pick from as he bids to get the 2019/20 season underway with a win.

Football FanCast breaks down five possible XIs.

[snack_break title=”Dream XI”]

If all the major targets arrive in north London, Spurs could have four debutants on the opening day.

Ndombele, of course, is already in the bag and gave fans a glimpse of what they can expect by laying on an assist with his first touch in a pre-season friendly against Juventus.

A midfield containing him alongside Lo Celso and of course Moussa Sissoko in central midfield could bear plenty of fruit for the club after the former Newcastle United man’s resurgence last season.

Sessegnon coming in at left-back would add an extra dimension both to Spurs’ defence and attack, offering width that the diamond formation lacks in midfield.

Sitting at the tip of the diamond is Dybala himself, a player who will inject flair, charisma and a touch of imperious class into Spurs’ build-up play.

In an ideal world Alderweireld will stay at the club and Eriksen’s demotion to the bench will signal the beginning of a new era in which Pochettino will have the squad depth to fulfil his ambitions.

The Argentine could also begin his experiment with Juan Foyth at right-back following the departure of Trippier to Atletico Madrid.

If that sequence of events plays out, and Harry Kane and Heung-min Son start the season in full health, then this looks like a mightily strong XI.

[snack_break title=”Nightmare XI”]

Of course, there’s the opposite scenario.

Pochettino could decide against using Foyth at right-back and install the rash Serge Aurier instead.

Alderweireld could still depart if a club is willing to match Daniel Levy’s £40m asking price, leaving Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen at centre-back, with Rose at left-back if both his and Sessegnon’s transfers fall through

Harry Winks could come in for Ndombele in midfield if Pochettino does not feel the Frenchman is ready, while Lucas Moura could fill in for Eriksen if he leaves too.

If Lo Celso fails to arrive, then Dele Alli would be the No.10.

Now, this doesn’t look like the most nightmarish of XIs but it is also made up solely of players who featured throughout 2018/19.

Between them, they made a combined 429 appearances in all competitions last season alone.

Only Aurier made less than 20, while Sissoko, Winks, Lucas, Son and Kane all made 40 appearances or more.

Don’t expect much freshness from this lot on the opening day.

[snack_break title=”Progressive XI”]

Paulo Gazzaniga has enjoyed some exceptional displays in goal for Spurs and, with Hugo Lloris flying home from the pre-season tour due to injury, he could well be trusted on opening day.

Kyle Walker-Peters has been banging on the door for a first-team breakthrough for almost two years now and Pochettino could select him while installing Foyth in his preferred centre-back role.

Partnering the Argentine with Sanchez could be the beginning of a new defensive tandem, while Oliver Skipp could take another step towards becoming a first-team regular.

Adding Troy Parrott to the attack would require a formation shift but the 17-year-old could be worth the risk; he has been prolific at youth level, scoring 15 goals in 13 games for the Under-18s, and made his senior debut in a friendly against Juventus.

He could partner Kane up top.

Of course, there is a lot of youth in this XI but Pochettino has routinely shown he does not mind chucking youngsters into the fray if they’re good enough.

[snack_break title=”Attacking XI”]

If Pochettino fancies going for it and attempting to run up a cricket score against the newly-promoted Villans, he could employ a 3-4-3 formation that relies on wing-backs.

That would see Aurier and Davies almost join the steely midfield of Ndombele and Sissoko, providing width on the flanks.

Further forward, there would perhaps be no need for a playmaker, with Lucas, Son and Kane providing a ferocious amount of firepower themselves.

There would be the option of tweaking the system from the bench if Eriksen or, perhaps, Lo Celso were to come on.

But this is a system that sees Pochettino loading all of the bullets into the magazine and hoping it fires.

[snack_break title=”Defensive XI”]

Or there’s this.

A flat back five would see Foyth play on the right – Aurier can’t really be trusted in such a formation – and Davies on the left.

Two defensive midfielders would come into the middle in Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama, with Sissoko the ball-carrier.

That would then see Son join Kane up front as Spurs relied on rapid counter-attacking and quick transitions.

This is a viable option for Pochettino but it would feel a waste to use it against Villa, a team who are likely to sit back and invite Spurs to attack.

There is no need for the hosts to join them in that tactic.

Liverpool starlet Bobby Duncan posts emotional Instagram after senior debut

[ad_pod ]

Yesterday was a big day for many of the Liverpool youngsters.

As the Merseyside team started their 2019 summer pre-season with a match against Tranmere Rovers, Jurgen Klopp decided to make dreams come true, including their coveted young star Bobby Duncan.

Duncan is still officially a part of the Reds’ Under-18 team but he was granted his senior team debut earlier this week, and it’s safe to say that he grasped the opportunity with both hands.

Liverpool ended up winning the game with an impressive six-nil scoreline and Duncan was among the goalscorers.

After the game the 18-year-old up and coming starlet quickly took to Instagram to share an emotional message with the fans and his teammates alike.

Even though he has only been a part of the Liverpool family for a year, he has rapidly established himself as a big part of the youth setup since he arrived from Manchester City.

Just last season he played a total of 36 games across all competitions, scoring 25 goals and assisting eight.

Spurs fans praise Winks ahead of 2019/20 campaign

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans have lavished praise upon Harry Winks despite a difficult season after an official club tweet.

The England international struggled with injuries throughout the campaign and missed the final six games of the Premier League season with a groin problem.

It is perhaps little surprise that Spurs won just two of those games – against Huddersfield Town and Brighton & Hove Albion – with Winks their best ball-player in deep midfield.

He returned for the Champions League final against Liverpool as Spurs lost 2-0 in Madrid, and fans are hopeful that he can stay fit for the entirety of the 2019/20 campaign as they look to kick on once again.

Winks, after all, was benched just twice in the top-flight season when available and is clearly trusted by manager Mauricio Pochettino.

He has also won three England caps but missed out on the Nations League finals, potentially because of his injury woes.
