Everton set to target another Grealish-esque Premier League star in January

As David Moyes looks to solve any remaining problems in his Everton side, the Toffees are set to target another out-of-favour player from a big Premier League club after the success of Jack Grealish.

Where Everton need to strengthen in January

It was an impressive first summer for The Friedkin Group, who matched their move into the Hill Dickinson with a number of fresh faces. Grealish, Thierno Barry, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Tyler Dibling, Adam Aznou, Mark Travers, Merlin Rohl and Carlos Alcaraz all arrived as Moyes was eventually backed in full.

Since then, there have been several signs that the Toffees are no longer a side expecting to be fighting among the bottom three in the Premier League. Instead, they’ve so far set their sights on the top half and beyond – sitting as high as eighth after seven games.

Grealish has been particularly impressive since arriving on loan from Manchester City, with his first goal for the club coming in last-gasp fashion against Crystal Palace last time out. The former Aston Villa star has looked a man reborn in Merseyside after being frozen out at Man City at times and it’s Moyes who’s reaping the rewards.

That said, there are still some problems that the Everton boss must address when the January transfer window swings open. Leading his attack, for example, is an out-of-form Beto or summer signing Barry, who have both struggled to get going on the goals front so far this season.

Beto has been particularly poor whilst Barry continues to settle and finding a replacement for the towering forward should be seen as one of Everton’s top priorities this winter.

Everton expected to target Joshua Zirkzee

According to Pete O’Rourke, Everton are expected to target Joshua Zirkzee in the January transfer window as he continues to struggle for game time at Man United.

The forward has lost his place to big-money signing Benjamin Sesko and is unlikely to get it back anytime soon, sparking rumours that he could leave Old Trafford just 18 months after arriving.

Dubbed “intelligent” by analyst Ben Mattinson before his move to Man United, Zirkzee should jump at the chance to join Everton if they come calling in January.

Moyes' next Grealish: Everton want red-hot winger likened to young Leroy Sane

Moyes has already transformed Grealish into a player who could very well find himself back in contention for a World Cup place next summer and Zirkzee could be next to benefit. The forward wouldn’t be the first player to find his best form after leaving Old Trafford, either.

Aston Villa now keen on signing "spectacular" £53m Champions League striker

Aston Villa are keen on signing a “spectacular” Champions League striker, who is now considering working under Unai Emery.

Villa want to sign new striker amid Watkins' struggles

Ollie Watkins has fallen below his usual lofty standards so far this season, with the striker finding the back of the net just once in eight Premier League matches, and he could find it difficult to reclaim his spot in the starting XI.

Emery may choose to persist with Donyell Malen at centre-forward, given that the Dutchman has impressed in recent weeks, scoring a brace in the 2-1 victory against Burnley at the beginning of the month.

Watkins was benched for the 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur due to fitness concerns, but the Englishman did manage to impress on international duty, scoring in the Three Lions’ 3-0 victory against Wales.

Emery will be hoping that goal will be a real confidence-booster for the 29-year-old, but it has now emerged that the Villans are looking to sign a new striker, who could push for Watkins’ starting spot.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Aston Villa are now keen on signing Real Madrid striker Endrick, and there are signs the Brazilian could be tempted by the move, with it being revealed that he is considering working under Emery.

There is widespread interest in the Real Madrid centre-forward from within the Premier League, however, meaning there could be fierce competition for his signature, with Manchester United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Newcastle United and West Ham United also in the race.

Not only that, but it could take a huge bid to get a deal over the line, given that the 19-year-old joined the Spanish side for around £53m, in a deal that eventually went through in 2024.

"Spectacular" Endrick could flourish at Villa Park

The 14-time Brazil international has found it very difficult to break into the Real Madrid team this season, failing to play a single minute of football in all competitions, despite emerging as a first-team player last season.

Aston Villa now overtake Liverpool in race for "outstanding" £43m defender

There has been a new development in the Villans’ pursuit of a defender.

ByDominic Lund Oct 21, 2025

During the 2024-25 campaign, the youngster was used sporadically by Carlo Ancelotti, but he achieved some important milestones, scoring his first goals in both La Liga and the Champions League.

Ancelotti is a keen admirer of the former Palmeiras man, having once lauded him as “spectacular”, but the starlet clearly needs first-team football if he is going to fulfill his potential, so a move, at least on a loan deal, would make sense.

With Watkins reportedly frustrated with Emery, the manager may also need to start thinking about long-term replacements, and Endrick has the ability to flourish at Villa Park.

Dodgers Remove Struggling Closer From NLDS Roster

The Dodgers just thinned out an already weak bullpen.

On Thursday, Los Angeles removed struggling closer Tanner Scott from their National League Division Series roster and replaced him with Justin Wrobleski. Scott was away from the team on Wednesday night during Game 3 of the NLDS against the Phillies.

's Fabian Ardaya is reporting Scott had a "lower body abscess procedure" that was unexpected and developed during a workout day. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts didn't rule out Scott's availability for the World Series, but removing him from the roster made the 31-year-old ineligible for the NLCS if L.A. reaches it.

While Scott struggled in 2025, his absence thins out a Dodgers bullpen that was a problem all year. During the regular season, L.A.'s bullpen ranked 21st in ERA (4.27) and 22nd in WHIP (1.33). The unit also ranked 23rd in home runs allowed (81). Things haven't improved in the postseason, as L.A.'s bullpen is carrying a 7.04 ERA, a 2.22 WHIP, and opposing batters are hitting .323 against the team's relievers.

Scott signed a four-year, $72 million deal in the offseason to take over as the Dodgers' closer. The marriage has been rocky. He was one of MLB's most dominant relievers in 2023 and '24, but was awful during the 2025 campaign. In 61 appearances, Scott went 1-4 with a 4.74 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, and 60 strikeouts against 18 walks in 57 innings. He saved 23 games, but had an MLB-high 10 blown saves.

Perhaps even more concerning for the Dodgers, more than any other deal, his massive contract may have pushed MLB closer to a salary cap than any other.

Scott had yet to pitch in the postseason, and Roki Sasaki has seemingly taken over as the team's closer, but a struggling unit just lost a high-end arm.

Where Yankees' Comeback ALDS Game 3 Win Ranks in Team's Postseason History

For the first portion of Tuesday night's Blue Jays-Yankees showdown, it felt like Toronto was gonna run away with it and handily eliminate New York from the postseason in just three Division Series games, a prediction strongly supported by the Blue Jays' 6–1 lead after the top of the third.

But the pinstripes eventually battled back and not a moment too soon, fueled entirely by a well-timed and momentum-shifting three-run homer from Aaron Judge that tied the game. Shortly after, New York took the lead and didn't lose it again, ultimately forcing a Game 4 and keeping their postseason hopes alive for at least another day.

Adding some more grandeur to the victory, the night's five-run recovery is tied for the second-largest comeback in Yankees' postseason history, on par with the 2010 ALCS Game 1 and the 1997 ALDS Game 1 (both of which are series that New York would go on to lose), per MLB researcher Sarah Langs.

The team's largest postseason rally, however, came in Game 4 of the 1996 World Series, which the Yanks won 8–6 vs. the Braves. They would then go on to win the championship that year in six games.

Outside of the Bronx, the largest comeback win to avoid postseason elimination specifically happened in Game 5 of the 2008 ALCS, when the Red Sox came back from a seven-run deficit to defeat the Rays and force a Game 6 (Tampa Bay would later eliminate Boston in Game 7).

After that, you have a six-run Cardinals rebound in Game 5 of the 2012 NLDS, then various five-point rallies from the 2002 Angels (WS Game 6), the 1995 Mariners (ALDS Game 4), and—you guessed it—the 2025 Yankees in ALDS Game 3.

We'll see what the Yanks can pull off next come Game 4, slated for Wednesday, Oct. 8, with first pitch at 7:08 p.m. ET.

Three Takeaways From the Tigers' Clutch Game 3 Win Over the Guardians

The Detroit Tigers are moving on to the American League Division Series.

Detroit went on the road and topped the Cleveland Guardians 2-1 in a tightly contested wild-card series. On Thursday, the Tigers secured a 6-3 win thanks to an excellent effort from five pitchers and some timely hitting that eluded them in Game 1 and Game 2.

After an epic collapse to end the season that cost them the AL Central, Detroit rebounded and will now face the top-seeded Seattle Mariners in the ALDS.

What follows are three takeaways from their big win in Game 3.

Jack Flaherty Earned His Rotation Spot

Jack Flaherty led the American League in losses this season, going 8-15 with a 4.64 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. Detroit lost eight of his last 10 starts, the last two of which came against Cleveland. On Thursday, he stepped up and largely locked down the Guardians.

The 29-year-old allowed one run on three hits over 4 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking two. He was wild, throwing only 43 of his 74 pitches for strikes, but he managed to limit the damage. A George Valera double opened the fourth inning, and Jose Ramirez singled to drive him in, tying the game at 1-1. He worked his way out of it. After getting two outs in the bottom of the fifth, he walked C.J. Kayfus and was relieved by Kyle Finnegan.

He left in a 1-1 game and didn't finish five innings, so he was ineligible for the win, but he put Detroit in position to come out ahead. He's earned his postseason rotation spot.

Detroit Can Get Timely Hits

In the first two games of the series, the Tigers were 2-23 with runners in scoring position, including going 1-15 in a 6-1 loss in Game 2. Their bats woke up in Game 3 as they went 5-12, including three straight singles with runners in scoring position in the seventh inning.

Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson, and Wenceel Perez came through when they had to, giving Detroit a 6-1 lead and some breathing room. Catcher Dillon Dingler, who grew up in Ohio rooting for the Guardians, also came up big. His two-out home run in the top of the sixth put the Tigers up 2-1. They never trailed again.

The Tigers can hit in the clutch, they just needed to get some confidence back. Once they did, it was contagious.

Cleveland Didn't Have Enough Offense

Yes, the Guardians' late-season run was remarkable and even inspiring. Unfortunately, it wasn't sustainable.

On the season, Cleveland's wRC+ of 87 ranked 28th in all of baseball, ahead of only the Pittsburgh Pirates and Colorado Rockies. Guardians hitters generated 13.2 fWAR, which ranked 25th, and their wxOBA of .299 was dead last. Eventually, that was going to catch up with them.

In the three games of the series, Cleveland's hitters slashed .178/.253/.322 for a woeful OPS of .575. They did have three home runs and eight RBIs, but also struck out 24 times with nine walks. Something has to change.

The Guardians brought up Chas DeLauter for the postseason in a move to juice the team's lineup, while top prospect and former No. 1 overall pick Travis Bazzana is at Triple A. While Bazzana struggled a bit at that level, it wouldn't surprise me if Cleveland had him at second base to start the 2026 campaign.

FAQs: Women's T20 World Cup

Who’s playing, when are the marquee games, where you can watch them, and more

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Feb-2020Why is this Women’s Twenty20 World Cup a big deal?
The popularity of women’s cricket has seen a dramatic rise in the past three years. Buoyed by India reaching the final, the 2017 Women’s 50-over World Cup had more than 180 million television viewers, according to the ICC. The next big tournament, the 2018 Women’s T20 World Cup, had live coverage in more than 200 countries. This edition is being hosted in Australia, where the Women’s Big Bash League gets up to 300,000 television viewers for games, so the World Cup matches are expected to be well-attended and widely consumed on television. What’s changed about the tournament?
The Women’s T20 World Cup has been around since 2009, but for the first five editions it was run parallel with the men’s tournament. In 2018, for the first time, the tournament was held as a standalone event. This edition is also a standalone tournament. Is this bigger than the Women’s 50-over World Cup?
That’s debatable, but in an effort to attract young audiences the ICC has focused on increasing the number of women’s T20Is, making it the most commonly played format in the women’s game. Until 2017, the most women’s T20Is in a year featuring one of the top-eight teams was 55 in 2016 (a World-Cup year, meaning more T20Is naturally). In 2018, that number went up to 83 (another World-Cup year) and in 2019, it was at 48 despite there being no World Cup to boost numbers. By contrast, there have been just 86 women’s ODIs played since 2017.So when and where is the tournament?
The 2020 Women’s Twenty20 World Cup starts on February 21 and ends with the final on March 8. The tournament is being hosted by Australia, with games to be played at the SCG, MCG, WACA, the Sydney Showground Stadium, the Manuka Oval in Canberra, and the Junction Oval in Melbourne. Both semi-finals will be at the SCG, and the final will be at the MCG.How many teams are playing?
The tournament features ten teams: Australia, England, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies, Bangladesh and, for the first time, Thailand. It’s also the first time a Thailand team is playing any cricket World Cup.What’s the format?
The teams are divided into two groups of five. Each team plays every other in their group, and the two teams with the most points in each group go through to the semi-finals.On which channel is the tournament being broadcast?
In India, you can watch the games on Star Sports’ channels on television or on Hotstar on the web or mobile. In Australia, you can catch the action on Fox Sports on television or on Kayo Live Stream on digital. Sky Sports will broadcast the games in England and New Zealand. And, of course, you can follow all the live scores, ball-by-ball updates and news on ESPNcricinfo.Who are the favourites?
Australia have won four of the six Women’s T20 World Cups so far, including the most recent one, and are the clear favourites this time around as well. They have lost just two of 14 T20Is since the start of 2019. England and India are the next strongest sides, with New Zealand the dark horses. What are some key dates to remember?
Australia play India on the opening day, February 21, and Australia play New Zealand on March 2 in the two marquee matches of Group A. India v New Zealand on February 27 could end up being a key encounter. In Group B, England v South Africa on February 23 and South Africa v West Indies on March 3 promise to be exciting games. You may also want to look out for first-timers Thailand’s first game, on February 22 against West Indies. Both semi-finals are on March 5, and the final on March 8.

Hot Seat: Who could have stopped Laxman-Dravid at Eden Gardens?

McGrath and Warne couldn’t do it, but could a bowler from another team have provided a breakthrough to change history?

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Jun-2020In this series, , we present our writers with a tricky cricketing scenario and ask them to captain their way out of it.Scenario
You are captaining Australia in the 2001 Eden Gardens Test. VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid have just brought up their 200 stand on day four, and India are 158 ahead. It’s clear something special is happening. Now, you are given a lifeline. You can bring in any two bowlers active at the time to replace two of your bowlers. Whom do you bring in to break this epic stand?Andrew Miller:
By a quirk of scheduling, not only would the ideal fast bowler have been available to step in, he was also a short plane ride away, having days earlier claimed eight match-winning wickets in a humdinger of a second Test in Kandy. The winter of 2000-01 was Darren Gough’s apogee. In consecutive away series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, he bowled with peerless skill and unquenchable optimism to propel Nasser Hussain’s men to the greatest triumphs of their lives, and in the process produced bursts of reverse-swinging brilliance that neither Waqar Younis nor Wasim Akram, at this late stage of their own careers, were able to better. Where others would have grimaced at yet another Laxman cover drive, Gough would have grinned and gone again. And, assuming that kidnapping Harbhajan Singh, Billy Midwinter-style, and forcing him to switch teams mid-match is out of the question, I would instead co-opt Saqlain Mushtaq as my mystery spinner of choice, his doosra still a relatively new and unfathomable weapon.Sharda Ugra:
There’s no nice way to say this, but if you have to break the growing Curse of Kolkata, there’s no point in calling in steady, disciplined metronomes, nor once-in-a-generation, ball-of-a-century spinners. This is the India who have spinners down pat. They know how to sort out auras. This is Dravid, the batting equivalent of Pigeon without the sulky snarlings, and Laxman, who munches his way through spinners for starters. Since we’ve given an out, take the only one that makes sense.Keep it simple and bring in the heavy artillery. Pace is pace , those ones. The Wizard of Waz, with his minimalist left-arm and ability to mangle off stumps, and the Rawalpindi Express. As Ian Bishop will shout nearly two decades later, they have . This is Eden Gardens, where on dark stormy nights they still hear Akhtar’s stump-rattling from 1999. Dravid remembers. Only Akhtar ever silenced Eden, and, in fact, emptied it out. Better not bother with anyone else. Or Headingleys will happen. For sure.Saurabh Somani:
I’m going to assume anything is possible, since how else could be captaining Australia. So off comes the arm-sling that kept Anil Kumble out of this series, his shoulder is magically healed, and he puts on the Baggy Green. I’ll become the second Australian captain to drop Shane Warne (though just for half a Test, so maybe I’ll be only the most selfish player he’s played with), but Kumble at Eden to Laxman and Dravid is mouth-watering. By 2001, all three knew each other’s games inside out.I’ll also bring in Muttiah Muralitharan, in place of Michael Kasprowicz. Muralitharan had 80 wickets in 12 Tests in 2001, and since Singh is running rings around batsmen, who’s to say Murali wouldn’t? Both of them in tandem can bowl long spells too, which means I have Jason Gillespie and Glenn McGrath fresh for short, sharp bursts.Karthik Krishnaswamy:
I want scary pace from one end, and who better to call on than Shoaib Akhtar. Two balls like the back-to-back yorkers he bowled to Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar at Eden Gardens in 1999 would do very nicely, thank you. From the other end, I’m calling on a spinner with vast experience of bowling in Indian conditions and with a deep understanding of Dravid and Laxman’s strengths and weaknesses. Welcome, then, to Kanwaljit Singh, Laxman’s team-mate at Hyderabad, who’s in the process of picking up nine wickets in his final first-class game. Kanwaljit’s career lasted over 20 years, and he only got better with age, picking up 163 wickets at 24.65 in his last four seasons. He was perhaps unlucky never to play for India; a match-winning spell them, at nearly 43, would be quite a finish.Getty ImagesSreshth Shah:
With McGrath, Kasprowicz and Gillespie not finding the breakthrough, it’s time to bring in someone similar to McGrath, but with the ability to bounce the ball more. Enter Courtney Walsh. With the lead swelling, Walsh will be able to plug the runs by bowling to his field, and the odd short ball could surprise the batsmen. Due to his higher release position, he may also get some variable bounce with the old ball. Walsh is also a patient bowler, unlike McGrath, who can get flustered when things are not going his way.Allan Donald will provide the extra pace, which may be effective against tiring batsmen. Aim for the toes, get the ball whizzing past the ears, and you could create a chance. He also loved bowling against India.Alan Gardner:
The leading candidate to come in and turn Australia’s fortunes with a prodigious role of his wrist is Muralitharan – by far the most prolific wicket-taker of the period, and with conditions that ought to suit him. However, Muralitharan had an even more underwhelming record in India than his potential team-mate Warne. Also, he might baulk at the idea of being asked to help win a match for Australia. Instead I’ll call on another offspinner with a fiendish doosra in Mushtaq, who claimed four consecutive five-fors against India, in Chennai and Delhi, two years previously. To add further spice, let’s also go with Younis, some way from his pomp but still capable in 2001 of making the old ball veer like an angry wasp – one good delivery might be all it takes to quell ideas of an India comeback for the ages.Danyal Rasool:
He may have been 38 by the Eden Test, but from the turn of the century until the start of this match, no one bar Muralitharan had more wickets than Walsh. And among active players who had bowled in at least 10 matches, only McGrath could lay claim to a better average than his 20.25. But unlike McGrath, who Dravid and Laxman had made look like little more than a glorified Mark Ealham, Walsh actually had the pace and bounce that might have upset the duo on a pitch that packed as much menace as a snail on sedatives.Alongside him – hear me out – I’d plump for Nantie Hayward. Remember him? He was young and unorthodox enough back then to look like an absolute tearaway, while his run-up and flaming red hair made him seem even faster. Laxman and Dravid appeared to have found a rhythm, and if Hayward was guaranteed to deny you something, it was rhythm. Later that year, he would play two Tests against India, and dismiss each of Laxman and Dravid after they were settled.Andrew Fidel Fernando:
Few fast bowlers have ever been as good in India as Walsh, who took 43 wickets at 18.55 in the country. The last of his matches in India was in 1994, and although he didn’t get to play there late in his career, he was as masterful as ever elsewhere. Durable, wily, skillful, and still capable of putting in long shifts, if anyone could wangle his way through Laxman or Dravid’s defence, Walsh was the guy.I’m tempted to have Muralitharan partner him, but the fact is, although he did well against India at home (average under 25), Muralitharan’s record in India is poor (average over 45). Both he and Warne have complained about the SG ball. Instead, I’ll throw in the best foreign spinner to play in India during this period: Saqlain Mushtaq. (Though there is definitely a temptation to see how a 17-year old Dale Steyn would have gone as well.)
