The maths behind Harry Kane’s goals: Why he could be the man to eclipse Alan Shearer

Harry Kane has had another stellar season for Tottenham, and is one of his country’s key men too. It is hard to believe he is still only 23.

Following his first season with Spurs, many people thought he would be another ‘one season wonder’, but how wrong they were. After his third season in a row as Tottenham’s top scorer, having won the Premier League Golden Boot in the last two seasons, he has established himself as one of the very best in the world.

Kane is not just a goal scorer, but has a brilliant overall game. He links play, particularly with one of England’s other top players in Dele Alli, and is part of every move: even if he is not the one to provide the final touch, he will undoubtedly have been involved in the build-up. His physicality and work ethic make him the ideal frontman for the modern game.

He has also been captain of Tottenham on multiple occasions and carries the pressure of being the main man for Spurs with aplomb. Whenever they are in need of a goal, he is man they turn to, and he very rarely fails to deliver.

So good has he been since a string of loans came to end and he established himself at the top of the Premier League, many pundits and fans have looked ahead to a potential breaking of Alan Shearer’s record of 260 goals in the Premier League.

Shearer achieved the record whilst winning the league title with Blackburn and playing for boyhood team Newcastle United. Whilst Kane is yet to win a trophy, that will surely come in time.

It is not just the overall goal record either. With six hat-tricks to his name thus far, including two in the last two games of this season, he only needs five more to equal that record too, which is also held by Shearer.

But it is the goal record that he will most want to beat. That is the main, longstanding record, and whilst that would take a monumental effort, the numbers back him to do it.

Taking the last three campaigns as the benchmark, since he burst onto the scene, Kane has averaged exactly 25 Premier League goals per season. Given that in 2016/17 he spent time on the treatment table, missing eight league games through injury, that figure would surely be higher with a bit more luck.

If Kane was to remain in the Premier League for his whole career – and with a strong allegiance to Tottenham that is far from out of the question, especially since they are a side on the up under Mauricio Pochettino – the early signs are that he is the man to beat Shearer.

Extrapolating the data shows that if he were to continue scoring at a rate of 25 goals per league season, he would surpass Shearer in eight seasons’ time. By then he would only be 31. Even averaging slightly less than 25, it would be realistic for him as he will play long into his thirties.

Kane is a determined player and will strive to be at the top for as long as he can. If he steers clear of injuries, there is every chance he will break the record eventually.

Perhaps the biggest threat to him not achieving the record would be a move abroad. Keep up the impressive work and there is no doubt that sides like Real Madrid will circle.

That would be a difficult proposition to turn down, but if he did, Alan Shearer might have to look over his shoulder. Spurs fans will certainly hoping he does.

Three European U21 Championship stars Tottenham should sign

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino will be keen to boost his squad this summer in order for them to once again challenge for the Premier League title, as well as trying to compete in the Champions League as they move to Wembley for one season.

Spurs have been known to promote and give young players such as Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Harry Winks a first team platform to perform on in recent years and it has proved to be a successful formula for the north London outfit.

Kane and Alli have thrived under the leadership of Pochettino – especially last season – and Tottenham may well be keeping a close eye on players currently performing at the European Under-21 Championships in Poland to find their next gem.

With the likes of Spain, Italy and Germany all competing, Spurs could find their next future star that could challenge for a spot in the starting line-up right away.

Here are three European Under-21 Championship stars Tottenham should sign…

Inaki Williams

With last summer’s arrivals Moussa Sissoko and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou failing to impress and Erik Lamela definitely being ruled out for the start of next season and Son Heung-Min a doubt too, Pochettino is sure to be looking for an attacking player this summer.

He could certainly do a lot worse than take a look at Williams, who usually features on the right wing but can also play on the opposite flank or as a centre-forward.

The Spaniard scored eight goals and provided a further eight assists for Athletic Bilbao last season and scored his first of the European Under-21 Championships on Tuesday as Spain beat Portugal 3-1 to reach the semi-finals of the competition.

Pacy, unpredictable and versatile, the 23-year-old could prove to be an excellent signing for Tottenham.

Marcus Ingvartsen

With Vincent Janssen another player that has failed to make a significant impact after joining Spurs last summer, Pochettino could look to sign another young player to provide competition and cover for Harry Kane next season.

The Argentine manager may well be keeping a close eye on Ingvartsen at the European Under-21 Championships with the striker scoring eight goals in just nine caps for Denmark at that level.

Having also netted 23 times for FC Nordsjaelland in his home nation last term despite being just 21 years of age, it only seems to be a matter of time before he moves on to bigger and better things, and he could certainly be an interesting option for Tottenham.

Niklas Stark

Tottenham have already been linked with moves for Manchester United’s Chris Smalling and Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson this summer, which suggests that Pochettino is in the market for a new centre-back.

If he is looking for a young player to provide competition for Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld with a view to replacing them in the long-term, he should be taking a closer look at Stark at the European Under-21 Championships.

The 22-year-old – who can also play in defensive midfield – made 32 appearances in all competitions for Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin last season and looks to have a bright future.

Tall, comfortable in possession and strong in the tackle, the German has many of the ingredients needed to be a success in the Premier League.

West Ham fans react hilariously to Joe Hart rumours

According to the Standard, West Ham are eyeing a summer loan swoop for England international and Manchester City outcast Joe Hart.

However, it appears that not all Hammers fans are delighted about the potential arrival of England’s 71-cap number one.

Since Pep Guardiola’s arrival at Manchester City in the summer of 2016, things have looked bleaked for Hart. The 30-year-old spent last season on loan at Torino but failed to impress in Serie A and was prone to making high-profile mistakes.

With this summer’s arrival of Ederson to the Etihad Stadium, the future of Hart almost certainly lies away from City and West Ham are now in the hunt to capture the England international, with a loan the most likely deal to go ahead.

However, it seems that West Ham fans are far from enamoured with the potential signing and some have taken to twitter to hilariously give their honest opinions on any potential deal…

In Focus: Theo Walcott would be a West Ham United star

According to reports in the Sunday Mirror, West Ham United are lining up a £25m summer swoop for Arsenal winger Theo Walcott, who scored 19 goals in all competitions last season.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Sunday Mirror says that the Gunners attacker was a frustrated figure towards the end of last season as Arsene Wenger introduced a new 3-4-2-1 formation.

The 28-year-old struggled to break into the starting line-up in the new system and was named on the substitutes’ bench for Arsenal’s last seven matches of the campaign.

Having also lost his place in the England squad with the 2018 World Cup in Russia less than a year away, Walcott could look to move on for regular playing time next season in order to force himself back into contention for the Three Lions.

Irons manager Slaven Bilic is keen to strengthen his attacking options this summer and the Sunday Mirror claims that he is willing to pay £25m for the winger.

How did Walcott fare on the whole last season?

He did pretty well considering he rarely featured towards the end of the campaign.

The 28-year-old’s 19 goals came in just 37 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal, while he also provided a further two assists.

Those statistics are even more impressive considering all of those goals came from the right wing, rather than the centre-forward position he has wanted to fill in recent years.

Would he be a good signing for West Ham?

He certainly would be.

Walcott has shown that he still has plenty of pace and can be clinical when given opportunities, and those are two things that the Irons were missing last season.

The fact that the 28-year-old has a point to prove to England manager Gareth Southgate would only help the Irons, as the forward would know that he has to impress on consistently to be a part of England squad for the 2018 World Cup.

Where would he fit in?

Considering Michail Antonio also plays on the right, it would certainly be interesting to see how Bilic would incorporate both into his side, but it certainly wouldn’t be a deal-breaker – more of a nice problem to have.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, Walcott may need to leave Arsenal this summer in order to keep his World Cup dream alive and a move to West Ham would certainly make sense considering he could stay in London and play regularly.

Odds cut on Snodgrass making early West Ham exit

After a disastrous summer of business a year ago West Ham looked to amend their mistakes in the January window by targeting Premier League experience with moves for both Robert Snodgrass and Jose Fonte.

Both were deals that, on paper, ticked all the boxes to fix an inconsistent Hammers side but in reality never really took off.

Having been at the heart of everything going forward for Hull City in the first half of last season – Snodgrass finished the 2016/17 campaign as the Tigers’ top scorer despite leaving in January – the Scottish international failed to find his groove in east London and was largely ineffectual going forward, picking up just two assists for Slaven Bilic’s side in 15 Premier League outings.

With that in mind, the former Norwich man has been linked with a move away from London Stadium after just six months, and odds on a move to relegated Sunderland have been cut to just 6/1.

Despite only recently joining the club it could prove a fairly popular move amongst the claret and blue support, who hold a slight disdain towards the 29-year-old due to his below-par performances, and their ambitions of reaching Europe in the near future.

Newcastle fans tip Gamez for big season

Spanish defender Jesus Gamez scored his first Newcastle United goal in the Premier League club’s 2-1 defeat to German side Mainz 05 on Saturday afternoon.

Gamez joined Newcastle on a two-year contract from Atletico Madrid last summer, but injury and the form of others saw the 32-year-old struggle for regular action last term.

The former Spain Under-23 international remains a popular figure with the club’s supporters, however, and he took to Twitter at the weekend to reveal his delight at scoring his first goal for the Magpies in their pre-season clash, in addition to praising summer signing Mikel Merino.

It would be fair to say that the Newcastle supporters did not see the best of the experienced full-back last season, but it appears that the club’s fanbase have kept the faith in a player that has a Champions League runners-up medal to his name.

Gamez will be out of contract at Newcastle at the end of next season, but many are tipping the Spaniard to play a key role in the club’s Premier League campaign.

Revealed: Spurs fans backing 3-4-3 setup for Newcastle clash

An injury to Kieran Trippier has left Tottenham facing a few conundrums ahead of their season opener at Newcastle United on Sunday.

Following Kyle Walker’s departure to Manchester City, Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t have another right-back to call upon, suggesting the Argentine gaffer may have to switch formations rather than putting a square peg in a round hole.

Accordingly, we put a curious question to Tottenham fans earlier this week – asking if the Lilywhites should set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, seemingly Pochettino’s preferred system, or the 3-4-3 formation that proved so effective in short bursts last season.

And according to our poll, the majority of Spurs supporters are firmly in favour of 3-4-3, with 75% voting for the formation, which would likely see former Magpie Moussa Sissoko line up at wing-back.

That would certainly give the home side something a little different to think about at St. James’ Park, but whether it can compensate for Trippier’s absence remains to be seen.

Rangers fans seethe at referee John Beaton after defeat to Hibs

When Alfredo Morelos opened the scoring for Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday, fans must have thought they were heading for a famous victory over Hibernian in their opening home league match of the season.

After a dramatic and controversial 90 minutes though, it was Neil Lennon’s Hibs that came out on top, winning 3-2. Simon Murray, a James Tavernier own goal and a Vykintas Slivka effort gave the Edinburgh side a massive victory in a much hyped encounter.

One of the big talking points in the match was the sending off of Light Blues midfielder Ryan Jack, who was given his marching orders in the 36th minute after a push and grab of Dylan McGeouch.

Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha was left fuming by the incident, vowing to appeal it.

As quoted by the BBC, the Rangers boss said:

We are going to appeal it, and we will show the images. I invite the referee to watch it, and to be honest, normally when someone commits a mistake, at least to my principles, I would recognise it.

After a positive start to their domestic season, the result is another massive set-back for Rangers, who must now rebuild and produce a better home performance next week against Hearts.

Fans took to Twitter to share their anger at the result, with referee John Beaton getting the majority of the criticism…

West Ham United’s struggles could continue without Lanzini, Fernandes

West Ham United could be without Manuel Lanzini and Edimilson Fernandes for Monday’s Premier League match against Huddersfield Town at the London Stadium.

What’s the problem?

football.london reports that the Hammers are sweating on the fitness of Lanzini after the playmaker withdrew from Argentina’s squad with a knee injury.

The publication also claims that Fernandes is a doubt for Monday’s fixture after spraining his ankle.

Slaven Bilic dealt with numerous injury problems last season, and it appears that he is going through the same issues again just three games in the league campaign.

Marko Arnautovic is suspended for the game, while Winston Reid is out injured, and there are doubts over the fitness of Andy Carroll and Andre Ayew.

Can West Ham get a result?

If Lanzini and Fernandes are both missing for the home match on Monday evening, then Bilic’s midfield will suffer.

The team have struggled for creativity so far this season, and losing the midfield pair will make life even tougher on the pitch.

It is the first game of the season at the London Stadium, so there will be even more pressure on the players to get a result.

West Ham have had an unfavourable start to the campaign having lost their first three matches.

They have only managed to score twice and have conceded 10 goals, which does not bode well given that Huddersfield are unbeaten with two wins and a draw.

Bilic will be hoping that every one of his players raises their game in order to get the points that they desperately need.

Chelsea fans pick Gary Cahill out for criticism despite easy Qarabag win

Chelsea got their Champions League campaign off to the perfect start as they thrashed Qarabag FK 6-0 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, but Blues fans were not impressed with captain Gary Cahill’s performance.

The Blues skipper returned to the starting line-up after serving a three-match suspension for the red card he picked up on the opening day of the Premier League campaign against Burnley, lining up alongside Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen in the three-man defence.

The west London were making their return to Europe’s elite club competition after a one-season absence and it took them just six minutes to find a way past the Azerbaijani champions when Pedro scored.

Davide Zappacosta, Azpilicueta, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Michy Batshuayi and an own goal from Maksim Medvedev rounded off the win for Antonio Conte’s side, who in truth had little to do defensively.

Cahill did pick up a yellow card for a reckless challenge in the 16th minute though, and Chelsea supporters were quick to slam his for his showing via social media, with some saying that the England international “needs to stay on the bench” for their future fixtures.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
