Leeds fans undeterred as financial accounts show a loss

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter have been unalarmed after the club’s financial accounts showed a £4.3million annual loss. The £4.3million loss comes twelve months after Leeds made a profit of almost £1million the previous year.

The most recent accounts published show that Leeds were working at an operating loss of £20million before the sales of players such as Chris Wood offset some of that.

The update was posted by Leeds journalist Phil Hay on Twitter. It hasn’t startled the Leeds fanbase though as their eyes are firmly set on promotion and the fortunes that come with it.

Despite the fanbase living through money worries at Leeds they don’t see the hefty deficit as too much of an issue as they are confident that Premier League football will be coming to Elland Road next season

With the Premier League being within touching distance for the Yorkshire club, some fans haven’t considered the consequences of these financial reports and have instead brushed them off as Leeds head towards the top flight where clubs’ incomes increase substantially.

Here’s what Leeds fans had to say on Twitter…

Liverpool: Selling Marko Grujic will be Jurgen Klopp’s biggest transfer mistake on Merseyside

Since joining Liverpool in 2015, Jurgen Klopp has often been praised for his transfer dealings at the club for both the players he has brought in and the profit he has made.

The signings of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson have ensured Liverpool future profits in the future, whilst the departures of Dominic Solanke, Jordan Ibe and Danny Ings have seen Klopp recoup a substantial amount of money over the years.

And another player who could be set to leave Anfield for big bucks is Marko Grujic, who according to ESPN is a £35 million target for Atletico Madrid should midfielder Rodri make the move to Manchester City this summer.

The Serbian midfielder, who is out on loan at Hertha Berlin, joined Liverpool as an 18-year-old from Red Star Belgrade in the 2016 January transfer window for a reported fee of £5 million as Klopp’s first signing as Reds boss, however, his time on Merseyside has been frustrating.

Grujic has only made 13 appearances in total for the club and has spent the majority of his time out on loan, and although it might be tempting to offload the 23-year-old for a fee seven times of that what Liverpool paid for him, selling the Serbian would be Klopp’s biggest transfer mistake yet in England.

His time on the pitch in Liverpool colours has been limited, but in Grujic the Merseyside club have a player who can control the midfield for years to come.

Although Hertha have had another underwhelming season, Grujic has seen his stock rise massively in the German capital, with manager Pal Dardai even claiming the Serb has been the best midfielder who has played for the club in 20 years.

With James Milner entering the twilight years of his career and Jordan Henderson not showing any signs of improving, Grujic could be the next long-term answer for the club in midfield, and selling him would be a mistake Klopp will regret down the line.

Liverpool fans, should Grujic be given a chance to impress Klopp? Let us know!

Josh Scowen had this to say on his favourite position

[ad_pod ]

QPR put an end to their woeful run of form in some style with an emphatic 4-0 win over Swansea on Saturday and, besides the much-needed three points, there were plenty of positives to be taken from the victory – another solid Josh Scowen performance included.

The midfielder has sometimes been scapegoated for his side’s failings in recent weeks but has been much-improved since the draw at Millwall, in which he was deployed further afield than his usual number 4 role.

Playing alongside Jordan Cousins in the middle of the park, the former Barnsley man was excellent again and had this to say about playing as an 8 after Saturday’s resounding result at Loftus Road:

“It’s somewhere I’ve played for most of my career. It’s been nice to play in what I feel is my best position – somewhere where I can get forward and defend, too. I feel that I’m a box-to-box midfielder. I felt like I kept running all afternoon – but that’s what I enjoy doing, to be honest. I’ve got the energy to do it.”

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

The 26-year-old has made 30 appearances for the R’s this campaign, scoring one goal and recording one assist, although he looks likely to add to those tallies before the end of the season if he can keep up his form as a box-to-box midfielder.

Scowen completed a game-high 4 key passes on Saturday and, if he can keep up that kind of output, the assists will come far more frequently.

Pundit View: Prutton backing Aston Villa to overcome difficult Rotherham clash

[ad_pod ]

Giving his usual EFL predictions to Sky Sports, David Prutton has determined how he thinks Aston Villa’s match with Rotherham on Wednesday evening will play out, claiming the Villains will prevail 2-0.

What’s he said?

With both teams having something to play for, Prutton thinks that Rotherham may be able to cause a bit of a scare as the Millers try desperately to stay in the division. Speaking to Sky Sports, the former player said:

“Rotherham are still within reach of survival, and they will fancy their chances of giving Aston Villa a scare at home, even though Dean Smith’s side are in such good form.”

The pundit then chose to focus on Villa’s last gasp win in their previous game, explaining that despite Paul Warne’s side potentially providing stiff opposition, they should be able to maintain their good form. He added:

“That was a huge result for Villa at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday as they look to seal a top-six spot. Rotherham is a tough place to go but I can’t see them not continuing their incredible run.”

All to play for

Given Rotherham’s position in the table, on paper, this match should be a walk in the park for Smith’s side. But fighting relegation, they will be battling hard for a result after defeating Nottingham Forest last weekend.

It’ll be a tough game for Villa but Prutton is right to predict that they’ll come out on top. The confidence they will have gained from that incredible win over Wednesday last Saturday will be immense and the effect those two injury-time goals will have cannot be underestimated.

The fact both teams have something to play for will make this a fascinating clash. However, given their six-match winning streak Villa should have enough about them to continue in the same fashion.

Summer deal? Newcastle offered chance to sign Laxalt from AC Milan

[ad_pod ]

According to ChronicleLive, Newcastle United will be offered the chance to sign AC Milan left-back Diego Laxalt in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the word, then?

The Magpies are expected to be in the market for a new left-back at the end of the 2018-19 campaign and according to ChronicleLive, Laxalt is an option.

Indeed, the 26-year-old will reportedly be available this summer having struggled to impress for Milan since a move from Genoa in August 2018.

Laxalt made 117 appearances for Genoa ahead of a switch to Milan, but it would be fair to say that he caught the attention of a wider audience with his performances for Uruguay at the 2018 World Cup.

The defender appeared on four occasions for his country in last summer’s tournament and was actually linked with Everton off the back of the competition.

Newcastle are now being strongly linked with a swoop and it will be very interesting to see whether the Magpies follow up with an offer.

What would Laxalt bring to Newcastle?

Far from an orthodox left-back, Laxalt has played as a left midfielder on many occasions.

Three of his four appearances for Uruguay at the 2018 World Cup came as a defender, but he has been used further forward by Milan this season.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

It has not quite happened for the South American since his arrival at the San Siro, but he has still made 28 appearances in all competitions during the 2018-19 campaign.

It is difficult to know whether Laxalt would be a success in the Premier League, but his his energy and enthusiasm would certainly excite the supporters, and Benitez is keen to bring in a new No.3. A lack of options there has forced Matt Ritchie to become Newcastle’s emergency left wing-back at times this season.

Newcastle should seriously consider a swoop this summer if the price is right.

Blackburn Rovers fans react on Twitter after Tony Mowbray’s Ben Brereton comments

[ad_pod ]

Blackburn Rovers fans on Twitter have been divided by comments made by manager Tony Mowbray about youngster Ben Brereton.

The gaffer at Ewood Park was talking to the club’s official website about how the 19-year-old has a big future in Lancashire, with Rovers posting some of the quotes on social media and supporters having their say.

Brereton signed from Nottingham Forest in early January having impressed during the first half of the season on loan from the City Ground, but has seen his football rotated between the first team and the under-23s since.

At one time, the starlet was one of the hottest young strikers in English football after firing England U19s to European Championship glory in 2017, however, his reputation has fallen somewhat since.

Mowbray’s comments received mixed replies from the Blackburn fan base, with one member making it clear their belief that Brereton won’t make it in blue and white, while another contrasted him by saying it’s “written in the stars” that he’ll get his first goal against former club Forest this weekend.

Manchester United’s predicted starting XI vs Barcelona

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United have it all to do against Barcelona inside the Camp Nou this evening.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men find themselves trailing by a goal to nil after a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford in the first leg, courtesy of an own goal by Luke Shaw – the England left-back is suspended for the game against the Spanish champions.

As a result, Solskjaer will need to replace the former Southampton full-back, although Marcos Rojo’s stint on the left of defence against West Ham at the weekend did little to strengthen the Argentine’s claim for another start.

We all love the Champions League theme tune but you’ve never heard it like this before! Check out the video below…

The Red Devils will need to go on the attack from the off against Ernesto Valverde’s side, as they need two goals to progress into the semi-finals in normal time having conceded an away goal to the Catalans at Old Trafford.

With that in mind, Solskjaer needs to pick an attack-minded eleven, although one that will be secure enough not to concede another, which would all but end their hopes of progressing.

Whilst that is easier said than done, we’ve put together a potential XI that Solskjaer could opt for this evening…

This line-up sees Ashley Young come in at left-back to replace Shaw, with Diogo Dalot slotting in at right-back to cover the former Aston Villa man’s swap over to the other side of defence.

Ahead of the backline, Scott McTominay, who performed so well in the first leg, is reinstated into the starting lineup after being rested against West Ham, whilst Fred, who has been playing well of late, comes in alongside him. Overall then, that’s four changes from the starting XI that beat West Ham on Saturday.

Opinion: Redmond would be mad to leave Southampton despite Hasenhuttl’s big club claim

Under Ralph Hasenhuttl, Nathan Redmond is finally fulfilling his potential at Southampton.

With the Austrian at the helm, the 25-year-old has gone from strength to strength and is now being tipped for a big move by his manager.

“I think when you look at the last games a few players showed up that they can be an option for a bigger club. You never know,” Hasenhuttl was recently quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

“At the moment I am not afraid somebody is knocking on my door and saying they want to leave. If this moment will come everybody knows they have a good value and they cost a lot of money but so far we have nothing to hurry.”

As good as Redmond has been since Hasenhuttl took the reins at St. Mary’s, though, a move to one of the Premier League big boys now is still a bit premature.

The England international probably has the tools to play in a top team in the future. You could definitely see him doing well in a side like Tottenham under Mauricio Pochettino or making an impact off the bench for an outfit such as Liverpool.

But before even thinking about making such a jump, Redmond needs to find more consistency and better his end product.

And at Southampton, under Hasenhuttl’s tutelage, the former Norwich City man has the opportunity to do just that.

No, rather than take a massive career gamble, Redmond should stay at St. Mary’s for the time being and continue to improve his game under a coach who is finally getting the best out of him.
