The message was loud and clear. They were happy to finally win, and now they want to build on it by claiming victory in the next round as well.

It remains to be seen if this result can kickstart Watford’s season, but the players are seemingly buoyed by the win, and that can only be a good thing.

West Brom’s Jonathan Leko has been impressing at Charlton Athletic

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Loan Watch series, which takes a closer look at those players who are aiming to galvanise their careers away from the spotlight of their parent club.

It is no secret that West Brom have quite the impressive academy setup, but a number of its starlets have found it hard to break into the first-team over recent years.

In fact, it’s actually been regarded as one of the best in the country.

Rekeem Harper made his debut over two years ago but has made just 27 appearances since then, including a meagre six minutes this season.

Whilst the fate of some of their other promising talents was already decided before the season had begun – both Sam Field and Jonathan Leko were sent on loan to Charlton Athletic for the season.

And Kyle Edwards and Nathan Ferguson were the lucky pair trusted with a place amongst the first-team setup.

But they could well be joined by one of the Addicks’ loan duo before they know it, thanks to the cunning recall clause embedded as part of their move.

Leko has particularly performed well down at the Valley, and could certainly be in line for a return to the west Midlands come January

If Grady Diangana continues to dazzle whilst himself being on loan at West Brom, then he’s likely to return to West Ham to compete for a spot in their Premier League lineup.

He’s already earned a call-up to England’s Under-21 squad.

It would make sense for Leko to be the natural replacement should that actually happen in January.

The 20-year-old has scored one goal and laid on two assists in just 343 minutes of football, also picking up one Man of the Match award, per WhoScored.

His attacking output for Charlton has been more than reasonable, averaging 1.4 shots per game as well as 1.2 dribbles per match.

Only Diangana has registered more goals and dribbles than the young winger, which goes to show that he could easily rival his Baggies teammates if he came back.

Spurs Predicted XI: Pochettino should bring Son in for Newcastle clash

Tottenham Hotspur will look to continue their unbeaten run in the Premier League, after their luck with VAR against Manchester City repeated itself last week, ensuring Mauricio Pochettino and his men left the home of the Premier League champions with a point.

Indeed, Spurs will welcome Newcastle United to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium later on today in their next Premier League fixture. The Magpies conceded three goals against Norwich City last time out and are yet to secure their first point of the campaign, so they’ll be hungry to get themselves up and running.

Nevertheless, with Spurs’ unbeaten record at stake, how will Mauricio Pochettino set his team up?

Kyle Walker-Peters has had to step up this season because of the sale of Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid, and it’s fair to say that he’s doing a rather solid job as the academy graduate was named as Spurs’ best defender last time out (as per Express) against Manchester City, despite partly being at fault for City’s first goal.

Alongside him in defence, Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld should keep their places having built a partnership in the opening two games, despite shipping three goals already. Although, Jan Vertonghen could soon enter the fray if things don’t go to plan at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium later on today.

With Tanguy Ndombele out, perhaps Eric Dier could come into shore up the engine room. Indeed, while the Magpies have struggled this season, the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron have averaged over 1 dribble per game, so turning to a man who averaged 1.3 tackles over the same period could be a good idea.

Indeed, with Son Heung-Min readily available after his suspension, Lucas Moura could shift out to the left and therefore force Christian Eriksen into the centre, which could result in Erik Lamela being dropped to the bench, despite receiving the highest rating (8/10) of any player for his performance against Manchester City (as per Express). The Lilywhites are set to face up against Arsenal in the north London derby next weekend, so it would make sense for Pochettino to give Son a healthy amount of minutes today in order to get him up to speed.

Harry Kane bagged a brace on the opening day of the season against Aston Villa, so he’ll be looking to build on his tally in what will be the club’s second home game of the campaign.

Furthermore, Dele Alli looks set for one more week on the sidelines, whilst summer signing Ryan Sessegnon and defender Juan Foyth remain unavailable for at least another three weeks, as Ben Davies rejoined the team this week.

Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil has been put up for sale

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Calcio Mercato is reporting that Arsenal have put Mesut Ozil on the transfer list, and that Turkish, Chinese and American clubs have their eyes on him.

What’s the story?

Ozil has had to make do with a bit-part role this season at the Emirates Stadium. He has made just two starts so far this campaign, and it does not look as though he will be returning to the starting XI on a regular basis anytime soon.

It now appears he could be leaving the north London outfit altogether, too. As per the Italian outlet, the former Germany international does not fit into Unai Emery’s plans, which could therefore see him depart.

Still has enough for Europe

It is a sorry situation the former Schalke man finds himself in and, for football purists, it is such a shame to see one of Europe’s great technicians unable to receive consistent playing time.

There was once a time when he was registering 19 Premier League assists in a season. To put that into perspective, only one player in the division’s history has more in one single campaign.

Of course, it is clear he has lost his way in recently, and the level of his displays are not what they once were. But, he is still just 30. That should give him at least another four years of good-quality football ahead of him, whether that is at Arsenal or not.

He still has so much more to give to the elite in European football, and it would be far too soon for him to depart for the big salaries of the USA or China. The Turkish game is far more competitive, but the overall quality is still lacking compared to the continent’s top five leagues.

The pace of the Premier League may now be too much for him, but somewhere like Serie A would be a far better fit. There are plenty of sides in Italy who would love to make use of his technical ability, just like there would be in the Bundesliga.

A fresh start in itself could be enough to rejuvenate him. He has not had an easy time of it in the past 18 months, what with the backlash of his photo with Recep Erdogan and the carjacking attempt against himself and teammate Sead Kolasinac. Both of these incidents came whilst still with the Gunners and psychologically, he may be starting to link his time in north London with bad memories.

It is probably fair to say that his departure from Arsenal is the best thing for all involved. But, from Ozil’s perspective, he needs to stay in football’s heartland. He still has so much left to give.

Everton fans turn on skipper Seamus Coleman after woeful display

[ad_pod ]

Having taken over captaincy duties from Phil Jagielka this season following the defender’s departure this summer, Seamus Coleman is quickly learning that his new role carries greater scrutiny.

The Republic of Ireland international represents the players on and off-the-pitch, and only top-quality performances will suffice.

Unfortunately for the 30-year-old, his displays this season haven’t quite been up to scratch.

The right-back has yet to produce a single goal or assist in six appearances this season, whilst his tackling numbers have dropped by a third from last year – 1.5 to 0.5.

In the 2-0 defeat to Sheffield United on Saturday, Coleman had no shots, key passes, tackles or interceptions.

After seeing the Irishman’s anonymous display, Everton fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts about the club’s skipper.

Many supporters of the Merseyside club slammed Coleman as a “liability”, whilst one fan even suggested the veteran’s attempts at trying to play football is “putting years upon years on me”.

Some fans even questioned why summer arrival Djibril Sidibe hasn’t been given a proper look-in yet, especially after their captain’s recent decline.

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk is confused by reports claiming he has signed a new deal

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

The Mirror reported over the weekend that Virgil van Dijk had agreed a new six-year deal with Liverpool, a claim which has since been denied by journalist Paul Gorst.

What’s been happening?

The news that the Dutch skipper had put pen to paper on a new long-term deal was greeted with excitement by many Reds fans on this Twitter thread, and rightly so.

That extension would have guaranteed the defender a role at the club until the age of 34, but it has since been dismissed, with van Dijk said to be confused by the talk suggesting he has signed on once again.

As a result, the 28-year-old will continue on his current deal which expires in 2023, thus securing a long-term stay at Anfield without the £200,000 a week cost that the other contract would have supposedly set the Merseyside outfit back.

That would have been quite an increase on the reported £125,000 a week the Dutchman currently earns, which is arguably quite a bit lower than what a frontrunner for the Ballon d’Or ought to be bringing in.

Should be given new contract

Van Dijk is certainly one of the best defenders around. The fact he was named UEFA Men’s Player of the Year is a testament to that, and as a result the Reds should be doing everything they can to get him to sign a new contract.

He may already be committed to the club for another four years, but a wage hike would reflect his importance to the team and ensure the player’s happiness, thus avoiding a scenario where he requests a move away.

Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Liverpool are now beginning to move into a position where key players are intent on staying and in some cases perhaps finishing their career at the club, and guaranteeing van Dijk’s future would support that.

The club didn’t spend huge amounts in the summer and that has likely fuelled speculation that new contracts are in the offing, and money could definitely be worse spent than renewing the deals of a few current key players.

Sheffield Wednesday’s links with Danny Cowley discussed by supporters

[ad_pod ]

Sheffield Wednesday look to be heading into the international break with an air of uncertainty hanging over caretaker boss Lee Bullen’s head.

That is because the club appears to be making moves to finally appoint a long-term successor to Steve Bruce, who departed south Yorkshire for Newcastle United earlier in the summer.

The Owls had begun the season well, but have since lost three of their last four Championship matches meaning the 48-year-old is under pressure if he wants the job permanently.

Sky Sports reported late Tuesday evening that Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley and his brother, Nicky, were in advanced talks to become the new management team at Hillsborough.

The Imps boss has since come out and played down the rumours by claiming it was news to him.

It remains to be seen if there is indeed any truth to this report, but that hasn’t stopped much of the Owls’ fanbase debating the possibility of seeing the successful Cowley twins in the dugout sometime soon.

One supporter hoped they weren’t appointed, calling them a pair of glorified PE teachers that have been managing a pub team, which was echoed by a further member of the Hillsborough faithful who said it could be another Jos Luhukay moment.

Several others appeared to be more positive with one fan claiming it would be a ‘refreshing and exciting’ appointment whilst another stated it was exactly the sort of move he was hoping for.

Here’s the best of the reaction:

Kosovo are anything but minnows to underestimate ahead of England clash

Like much of the violent reorganisation of the Balkan States that took place following the crumbling of communism, the Kosovo War was bloody and controversial and by the end of two years of conflict it is estimated that 13,500 people were killed or missing. Yugoslav and Serb forces also caused the displacement of close to 1.5 million Kosovo Albanians.

Though the war officially ended in 1999 the fall-out was predictably messy and protracted and it wasn’t until 2008 – just eleven years ago – that Kosovo was recognised as an independent country free of Serbia.

From there, in an altogether less important footballing context, another fight began.

After two decades of playing exhibition matches against non-FIFA members – the most notable of which was a 7-1 trouncing of Monaco in 2006 – the fledgling nation was finally sanctioned to play international friendlies in 2014 and in March of that year they took on Haiti in the mining town of Microvica. No flags were permitted. No national anthem was allowed to be played.

Twelve months later a tight vote of 28 to 24 saw Kosovo accepted as a member of UEFA and from there the Kosovan federation immediately applied to join FIFA, a request that was agreed to in May 2016. “The players and people of Kosovo have been waiting a long time – thank you,” the Kosovo FA president stated as the world governing body acquiesced.

Had the decision been made much earlier it is likely that Liverpool’s Xherdan Shaqiri would be turning out for Kosovo, born and raised as he was in the Gjilan district. At the 2018 World Cup Shaqiri sported a right boot that had the Kosovo flag stitched into it while his Swiss team-mates Granit Xhaka and Valon Behrami are both also of Kosovar descent, the latter deriving from Microvica, the town where Kosovo’s soccer heritage was reborn.

These players are what-might-have-beens. A collective what-if had history been kinder and resolved itself quicker.

Watch England Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Yet that is not to say that the Kosovo national side is short of quality. Indeed, though there are several fascinating strands to the opening chapters of their story, perhaps what interests the most is that, via unusual circumstance, their ranking is entirely disparate to who they are and what they are capable of. FIFA presently rank them 120th in the world – behind such luminaries as Bahrain and Sierra Leone – and that is understandable given how few competitive fixtures they have played. But they’re good. They’re really, really good.

Known as the ‘Brazil of the Balkans’ theirs is a team sprinkled with familiar names and furthermore together they cohesively play with the immense pride of a country that has recently emerged whole from former suppression.

In goal stands Torino’s Samir Ujkani, the team’s captain. In defence Huddersfield Town’s Florent Hadergjonaj and Verona’s Amir Rrahmani offer stout resistance. Further up there is creativity to spare from Swansea’s Bersant Celina – whose excellent form is a major reason for the Jacks’ present promotion charge in the Championship – and then there’s the Dardanian’s star man Arber Zenelli, a midfielder of rare ingenuity.

Could “the new David Beckham” start for England against Kosovo tonight? Find out in the video below…

Kosovo’s successful Nations League campaign last year saw them boss Division D and consequently they are now guaranteed at least a playoff spot for next summer’s Euros. Most startlingly of all they presently boast the longest unbeaten run of any country in Europe. “I will tell England that Kosovo is not going to be easy,” Christian Eriksen said following Denmark’s  2-2 draw with them back in March.

This brings us to Tuesday’s Euro qualifier and though it will not be the Dardanian’s most meaningful game to date it is unquestionably their biggest in scale. This is Wembley, the home of football, a home inhabited by 90,000 fans.

At first glance it is tempting to believe that Kosovo are minnows at they take on Kane and company, at best ‘dark horses’. In truth they are anything but; in terms of ability, in terms of their achievement to exist.

Rangers Ryan Kent is "worth every penny", according to Ibrox legend Ian Durrant.

Rangers legend Ian Durrant has claimed that Rangers have completed a shrewd bit of business by signing Ryan Kent for £7m and that they could make a profit when he moves on according to The Evening Times – via Football Daft Podcast.

What did he say?

Ryan Kent’s signature was secured on the last day of the transfer window for £7.5m and became Rangers second highest transfer behind the £12m paid for Tore Andre Flo. It was a transfer saga that endured the summer with Steven Gerrard making it clear from an early stage that Kent was a target and that he wanted him to return to the ibrox club.

Initially Kent’s move looked to be over as Jurgen Klopp vetoed any more loan moves and it looked as though Rangers had been priced out of a permanent move with some reports suggesting Liverpool were wanting between £8-10m.

Rangers finally got their man though and it has delighted fan’s favourite Durrant and when he was asked if his boyhood club had delivered a good value deal, he replied:

“You’re getting a young kid who’s come from a great background at Liverpool, great upbringing who just wants to play football now. He’s been part of Liverpool’s squad in pre-season but he’s wanting to come up and he’s struck up a great relationship with Steven Gerrard who I think had him in the youths.

“He wants to play for Rangers, he had opportunities to go to Leeds, Brugge. His main aim was to go play for Rangers and Steven Gerrard who has a big pull to bring players in. Rangers and Celtic are now selling clubs and if there’s an opportunity comes up players will be sold for top dollar.”

So is Durrant right?

Originally Liverpool were looking for more than the £7m figure that has been quoted in the press. There is a premium on young English talent and money is no object in both the Premier League and Championship.

Last year was Kent’s break through season and he demonstrated in the two Old Firms fixtures at Ibrox just how good a player he has the potential to be – but for a late card ruining his copy book – his performance in the final Old Firm game at Parkhead was also a stand out. Two goals and an assist in four games against Celtic highlights his ability to handle the big occasion.

Ironically it has been a piece of Celtic transfer business that could benefit Rangers in the long run. The £25m singing of Kieran Tierney by Arsenal has inflated the value of the Scottish league’s top talent and Kent was rated Young Player of the Year by both his peers and the Writers Association.

Even if he has a similar season, Kent would be able to command a fee over what Rangers have paid for him and if he was to improve then his price tag rises. As Durrant claimed, Kent wanted the move to Rangers and perhaps managed to get him cheaper as a result. With Alfredo Morelos rated by Rangers in the same bracket as Moussa Dembele who went for £19.7m, Durrant is correct to think that Rangers have picked up a steal given Kent’s importance in key fixtures and to Rangers.
