Nottingham Forest fans blast Aro Muric after Kosovo performance

[ad_pod ]

It’s been a while since a Nottingham Forest player earned a call-up to the England squad, not since the late 1990s in fact when Stuart Pearce earned his last cap in a Reds shirt in 1997.

Other than being an English native, Forest fans would typically have no other reason to tune in for a fixture against Kosovo, but one of their players actually started the game for the visitors.

Manchester City loanee Aro Muric is Kosovo’s first-choice keeper even though he’s lost his spot between the sticks to Brice Samba, who has started their last two matches in the league.

The 20-year-old had quite the mare and much of the City Ground fanbase are letting him know about it on social media.

He let in five goals, including a couple that could have been saved, if the fan reaction is anything to go by.

A positive could be the fact he managed to get down to deny Harry Kane from the spot, though aside from that, it was far from impressive.

One supporter hoped the 6 foot 6 giant was sent back to his parent club, claiming that Costel Pantilimon was far better while one stated he made the Romanian look like goalkeeping great Peter Schmeichel.

Muric started Forest’s first four Championship matches, keeping one clean sheet whilst conceding four goals, per Transfermarkt.

Other fans labelled the performance ‘absolutely awful’ and ‘garbage’ with one member of the Forest faithful believing he isn’t good enough in the league let alone facing the likes of Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane.

Here’s the best of the reaction:

Watford fans react negatively to Quique Sanchez Flores training video

Watford have had an abysmal beginning to the season and some of the fans are starting to lose faith in the team after no wins in seven.

The club posted a video of the new manager dishing out instructions during training, but it wasn’t enough to give supporters the lift they need, with some suggesting they will need more than the organisation the Spaniard was commanding.

However, greater cohesion in their defensive play would go a long way to helping Watford’s current predicament, given they have conceded 20 goals in only seven league games – the most of any side.

Their downbeat nature is understandable, therefore, and one fan believes it is time for the former Atletico Madrid manager to prove his worth, starting with the visit of Sheffield United on Saturday.

Should the Hornets pick up a win it could give their fanbase a much-needed boost and rid them of the pessimism they currently feel, as evidenced by the reactions below.

Roy Hodgson’s best Crystal Palace moments after two-year anniversary as manager

[long_read]

After a turbulent 77-day spell under Frank de Boer, which ended with the Dutchman overseeing four straight Premier League losses without his side scoring a goal, things looked bleak for Crystal Palace.

The out-of-work Roy Hodgson was available and swiftly appointed as De Boer’s successor on 12th September 2017, with the Eagles enjoying a rare period of stability since the former England manager’s arrival – Palace have had seven permanent managers since 2011.

The 72-year-old comfortably led the south Londoners to survival in his first season at the helm, despite Palace losing their first seven games without scoring, although there have been plenty more excellent moments under the experienced boss as we surpass his first two years in charge…

[snack_break title=”First win as Crystal Palace boss”]

What better way to start off than to recall Hodgson’s first win as manager of his boyhood club?

As aforesaid, the Eagles were on a goalless, seven-game losing spell before the champions Chelsea rocked up at Selhurst Park, but an own goal from Cesar Azpilicueta and a well-taken Wilfried Zaha effort earned Palace a shock 2-1 victory.

[snack_break title=”Biggest Premier League winning margin”]

The veteran manager guided the team he supported as a boy to their largest ever Premier League win towards the end of the 2017/18 season, with a resounding 5-0 thumping of Leicester.

Goals from Zaha, James McArthur, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Patrick van Aanholt and Christian Benteke helped make club history – a real achievement from Hodgson and his players.

[snack_break title=”Manchester City 2-3 Crystal Palace”]

Perhaps the most surprising result of last season in its entirety, let alone Hodgson’s spell as Palace boss.

The south Londoners arrived at the Etihad Stadium with nothing to lose. Pep Guardiola’s men were the reigning champions and were also the only side in the top six tiers of the English game to have a 100% home record when Palace turned up just before Christmas last year.

However, having gone behind early on, a goal from Jeffrey Schlupp, a Puskas Award nominee from Andros Townsend and a steely penalty from Luka Milivojevic earned Palace a truly unbelievable win.

[snack_break title=”Recording club-record Premier League points total”]

The 5-3 win over Bournemouth on the final day of last season saw Palace finish the campaign on 49 points, a club-record total for the Eagles in the Premier League era.

Two goals from Michy Batshuayi, an own goal from Jack Simpson, as well as strikes from van Aanholt and Townsend helped cement the impressive feat.

[snack_break title=”Historic win at Old Trafford”]

The Eagles created club and Premier League history with their 2-1 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford this season.

Jordan Ayew’s opener and van Aanholt’s last-gasp strike saw Palace record their first win over the Red Devils in the Premier League era – the Dutchman’s strike was also the first time United had conceded a stoppage-time winner at home in the Premier League.

Everton fans livid with Pickford after Manchester City defeat

[ad_pod ]

Everton fans have blasted Jordan Pickford after he made a series of mistakes during the club’s 3-1 loss to Manchester City on Saturday.

The 6 foot 1 England goalkeeper conceded three times at Goodison Park, and a number of supporters were unhappy with the manner of the second goal.

Riyad Mahrez bent a free-kick into the bottom corner to give Pep Guardiola’s champions a 2-1 lead, but the shot was to Pickford’s side of the goal and crept into the bottom corner.

He then went on to let in a Raheem Sterling volley, before haring out of his goal in an attempt to tackle Bernardo Silva; he was unsuccessful, though City were unable to score from the chance – leading the Three Lions No.1 to visibly smirk about what could have been another goal for the visitors.

Fans, thus, were unhappy with the form of the stopper as the Toffees slipped to another defeat.

Indeed, Pickford has conceded 10 goals in his last four games, with Everton winning just one of those – a 3-2 triumph over Wolves.

During and after the match, Everton fans were quick to show on Twitter just how disgusted they were with Pickford’s performance…

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa made one huge tactical blunder against Charlton

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Off the Bench series, which places in-game managerial decisions and squad selections under FFC’s microscope.

Will Leeds ever dominate a game and win again? For now, it seems unlikely.

No matter what Marcelo Bielsa’s side do, they fail to get over the line.

It’s been a similar story in the last two games. Against Derby they registered over 60% of the possession but didn’t come away with maximum points while things were even worse at the Valley on Saturday.

71.6% of the possession was not enough as Macauley Bonne fired home what was an eventual winner.

However, could Bielsa have made things easier for himself? Quite possibly.

Snapshot

Leeds were incredibly underwhelming in the first half as they went into the break at 1-0 down.

Usually they’ve conceded late on so this was a different scenario for the Whites who were needing to come back to cement themselves at the top of the Championship.

With things not going according to plan, the manager opted for a big switch.

He took off Jamie Shackleton and Gjanni Alioski for Adam Forshaw and Eddie Nketiah which allowed the system to change from 4-1-4-1 to 3-5-2. This, however, might have been the wrong change.

Off the bench

Given the decision to switch formations, taking Alioski off was rather baffling as Jack Harrison was forced to play in a more defensive role on the left-hand side.

The 22-year-old has struggled for chance creation this term, providing just three accurate crosses from a possible 37 so his attacking play has been poor. But he’s also not a defender so it was puzzling to see him moved back.

It might be argued that Alioski’s defensive game isn’t up to scratch either but the North Macedonia international has already thrived at left wing-back in his career.

The most recent example came against Stoke earlier in the season. They played with a 3-5-2 formation throughout and secured their most comfortable victory of the season by winning 3-0.

Alioski scored in that encounter playing from a wing-back role but the formation didn’t have the same results at the Valley as he was absent from the second half.

It was a tactical blunder from Bielsa who removed someone capable of having a significant impact in this system and instead moved someone out of position. Perhaps this wasn’t the change that was required given the circumstances.

Leeds failed to come back and secure any points so it was a decision that ultimately came back to bite them.

Harrison has played out of position before and did so upfront in that same game against Stoke. This was not the time to field him in a deeper role, however.

West Ham fans deliver verdicts on Nathan Holland

West Ham United prospect Nathan Holland has yet again been impressing for the Hammer’s youth sides, and some fans are making a case for the 21-year-old to be included in Manuel Pellegrini’s first-team squad.

Holland is yet to break into the senior team despite being 21 years old, though he was given a 57 minute run out against Oxford United last month.

His lack of involvement, however, suggests that Pellegrini is reluctant to integrate him.

The winger has been in impressive form this season, bagging two goals and providing three assists for the U23 side.

Despite a 4-3 defeat against Cheltenham Town earlier this week, Holland was in excellent form against Michael Duff’s side, and ExWHUemployee called for the academy prospect to be given a “proper chance” in the first-team picture shortly after the game.

Whilst Pellegrini’s side are currently in impressive form in the Premier League having risen to eighth in the table, some West Ham fans believe Holland should be given an opportunity beyond the U21’s.

Check out some of the best reactions below to the latest performance from the club’s highly-rated prospect…

Leeds’ Stuart Dallas losing place to Luke Ayling would be a travesty, says journalist

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking on episode 67 of Yorkshire Evening Post’s Inside Elland Road podcast, journalist Graham Smyth has given his thoughts on Luke Ayling’s comeback and his competition alongside Stuart Dallas.

What’s he said?

Leeds returned to winning ways last weekend as they went top of the Championship courtesy of goals from Mateusz Klich and Eddie Nketiah.

The U23s were then in action on Monday night as they thrashed Watford 6-0. Featuring in that encounter was Tyler Roberts and Luke Ayling, fresh from injury troubles.

The latter underwent ankle surgery over the summer and has yet to feature for the first team in 2019/20. However, after scoring and assisting for the youth team earlier in the week, he looks ready and raring to go.

Despite that, Smyth has suggested it would be a travesty if Dallas lost his place for the newly returned defender. He told the Inside Elland Road podcast:

“As of last night [Monday], Luke Ayling can once again play football. I don’t think anyone would suggest that he comes straight in for Dallas because that would feel like a travesty because of the way Dallas has played. Ayling is back and that’s another great option off the bench.”

Fierce competition

Considering Dallas’ performances a rivalry between the pair could be about to ignite at Elland Road. The competition will be healthy and it’ll be a welcome dilemma to have by boasting two accomplished full-backs.

Ayling was a key player for the Whites in 2018/19, appearing 40 times and racking up six assists along the way.

But Dallas has stepped in confidently and via WhoScored, he’s achieved an average match rating of 7.16 in the opening weeks of the season.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He scored against Stoke, showing he has the capabilities going forward while he’s also been consistent at the back.

The Northern Irishman has made 1.9 tackles per game and has also managed 1.1 interceptions each outing.

With Leeds conceding just three goals so far it’s difficult to see why he would be ousted and as a result, Ayling might have to bide his time before coming back into the starting XI.

It would certainly seem harsh on Dallas if he wasn’t suddenly picked.

Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg needs more help from his midfielders

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Recently, we outlined why Pierre-Emile Højbjerg’s midfield battle with Sheffield United string-puller Oliver Norwood was crucial to the outcome of Saturday’s game.

While Højbjerg didn’t necessarily lose his individual battle despite Norwood’s impressive individual numbers from the match, the Danish midfielder needs more help from teammates such as Oriol Romeu despite their 1-0 win.

What happened at Bramall Lane?

We detailed how Højbjerg’s pressing ability would be crucial to getting a result against the Blades, winning the ball high up the pitch and taking advantage.

While it was Sofiane Boufal who nipped in for Moussa Djenepo to go on and score, Højbjerg still had a huge influence on proceedings.

The former Bayern Munich man registered three key passes and two dribbles, while also completing two tackles, two interceptions and two clearances, but Norwood and his midfield partner John Fleck’s numbers from the match prove that Romeu, James Ward-Prowse and Boufal needed to help out more

How did the trio perform?

As aforesaid, Boufal got the assist for the winner and completed 10 dribbles too, per WhoScored, so he played well – however, the Moroccan, Romeu and Ward-Prowse didn’t help Højbjerg out enough from a defensive aspect.

Romeu – Højbjerg’s midfield partner in a two – made no interceptions and no blocks, while also failing to register a key pass or complete a single dribble.

Ahead of the duo, Ward-Prowse didn’t complete a dribble or take a shot, and also made just one tackle.

In Boufal’s case, he didn’t make a single defensive action at all and was also dispossessed a game-high seven times.

Contrastingly, you can see how influential Norwood and Swift were by their statistics.

Norwood made a game-high four key passes and also made four tackles, two interceptions and three clearances, whereas Fleck took five shots, made three key passes and completed three dribbles.

Højbjerg did well to help his side come out with a 1-0 win, but the Saints risk overloading the 24-year-old against better opposition, as evidenced by the stats of his team-mates.

Man Utd’s transfer mess since Sir Alex’s exit makes their failure unsurprising

[ad_pod ]

From signing Romelu Lukaku to selling Lukaku, from signing Angel Di Maria to selling Di Maria, Manchester United have quite literally gone full circle on certain occasions when it comes to their transfer policy in recent years.

Since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, the Red Devils have had a ridiculously confusing way of going about things.

Several managers have come and gone at Old Trafford, each of them leaving behind some more mess to clean up for their successor. It’s perhaps one of the key reasons behind why the club have failed to win the Premier League since 2013.

There needs to be a level of consistency both in terms of the managers being appointed and the players being signed. Instead, United have had a mish-mash of styles and personalities, and the breakdown of the club’s transfer history really puts things into perspective about the lack of planning at the club.

David Moyes – Tried and trusted

The first man to follow in the footsteps of Ferguson, David Moyes undoubtedly had the toughest job of the lot.

He was stuck in between a rock and a hard place on whether to completely rip up the template, or affect slow change. In the end, his lack of decisive action on leaving his own imprint on the club cost him dear.

The former Everton boss must have been wary of walking into a dressing room dominated by players who had only ever known one man. Just how would they respond to a new voice?

It was, therefore, no surprise to see the Scot turn towards Marouane Fellaini who had been a key figure for him on Merseyside and had registered 177 appearances for the club.

Then, Moyes went for another Premier League-proven player in Juan Mata who had been at Chelsea previously. His two major signings were designed not to upset the apple cart. Perhaps that’s exactly what he needed.

Louis van Gaal – High-profile stars

Having sacked David Moyes less than a full season into his time in charge, United thought they would fix their mistake with the former and appoint someone who had managed some of the biggest and best clubs in Europe.

Louis van Gaal strode in with an international reputation and his love of the word philosophy, something he turned to in many press conferences. In the market, the Dutchman spent big on transfer fees on international quality stars who had proven their worth at other clubs.

His first summer saw marquee deals for Angel Di Maria and Falcao be completed and per Transfermarkt, the Red Devils spent in the region of £175m on new talent.

The following year saw Anthony Martial arrive for £36m, including add-ons – the most expensive transfer for a teenager at the time.

Another deal that perhaps went under the radar was the £31m capture of winger Memphis Depay. Both Martial and Depay had carved out promising careers at both AS Monaco and PSV respectively but enjoyed different fates.

The former made an incredible 56 appearances in his debut campaign, while the latter never truly nailed down a place in the starting eleven – from January 2016 to the end of the season, the Dutchman started just four Premier League games in total.

Jose Mourinho – Physical beasts

Then came Jose Mourinho. “The Special One” had a seemingly clear vision in his mind and the club’s hierarchy tried to match his early demands. His first transfer window saw notable arrivals in the shape of 6 foot 5 Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the 6 foot 2 Eric Bailly and the 6 foot 3 Paul Pogba, among others.

The 56-year-old seemed intent on building a team that could physically dominate the opposition. The captures of Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof further reinforced his squad with tall and strong players. It was, therefore, no surprise that eventually critics slammed the Red Devils’ slow and lethargic style of play.

One quote from Paul Ince particularly springs to mind: “Don’t be a dinosaur and start attacking teams like we have done over the years.” It was a damning statement and summed up what United had become since Ferguson.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Whilst Solskjaer may not have had too long in the job to really stamp his mark on the side, the Norwegian’s plan is already becoming crystal-clear.

The United boss is intent on re-energising the team with more youth and pace, and some of the side’s best performances under him have been games where counter-attacking has been key – most notably this season against Chelsea.

The work the club did in the summer transfer window symbolised the kind of cleansing approach Solskjaer is taking.

Gone are the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez – players who were on big-money, £530,000 between them, and not exactly justifying their mammoth wages.

The latter in particular spectacularly failed to deliver on expectations, scoring just five times for the club.

Instead, Solskjaer has invested in younger, British players who could potentially be a part of the United set-up for the next decade or so.

Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire arrived and now reports suggest the club will be looking to sign Jadon Sancho and James Maddison next summer.

Verdict

Taking things at face value, United have made some stellar signings in recent history. The biggest issue though? Each manager has had a transfer window that could essentially have been designed for separate clubs. No cohesion, no consistency and no plan.

The biggest difference in approach comes with how Solskjaer is attempting to rip up everything Mourinho had imprinted.

It could well turn out to be the right idea, but it needs a sense of clarity from those at the top. Even if things don’t end up working out with the current United boss, the Red Devils can ill-afford to start from scratch again.

What they need is a sense of direction and purpose about the kind of profile of player they are looking for, regardless of who happens to be at the helm at that time.

United’s transfer history since Ferguson’s retirement has been a mess. It’s about time they clean it up.
