Is MS Dhoni the oldest man to captain in all T20 matches?

And has anyone gone in at every batting position in the IPL?

Steven Lynch15-Apr-2025Has anyone gone in at every batting position in the IPL? asked Mahesh Gupta from India

There’s only one man who fits the bill here: the West Indian spinner Sunil Narine started as a tailender with the bat – he had only two innings in 15 matches in his first IPL, in 2012. He batted in three innings at No. 11, then started to move up the order.Gradually Narine developed his left-hand pinch-hitting to the extent that he now usually goes in first, and he has scored more than 1300 IPL runs as an opener. In 2024 he clobbered his maiden century – 109 from 56 balls for Kolkata Knight Riders against Rajasthan Royals at Eden Gardens.Narine has also taken 185 wickets so far in the IPL – only three men have more as I write. He’s one of only five men to have done the double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in the IPL, the others being Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Andre Russell. Two Bangladesh bowlers took five wickets in a recent women’s one-day international. Has this ever happened before in an ODI? asked Ahmedul Kabir from Bangladesh

The match you’re talking about was a Women’s World Cup qualifier against Thailand in Lahore last week: Bangladesh’s legspinner Fahima Khatun took 5 for 21, while offspinner Jannatul Ferdus had the eye-catching figures of 5-3-7-5 as Thailand slid from 65 for 3 to 93 all out. This was the first case in a women’s ODI of two bowlers taking five wickets apiece. It’s also happened just once in men’s ODIs, back in 1977 when Greg Chappell took 5 for 20 and Gary Cosier 5 for 18 for Australia against England with their medium pace at Edgbaston. “It wasn’t a day for the regular bowlers,” wrote Chappell, Australia’s captain that day. “At our lower pace we made the ball bend in the air and seam off the pitch, and with the help of some undistinguished batting by the England batsmen, whose footwork often left a lot to be desired, we finished off the innings for 171.”Is MS Dhoni the oldest man to captain in the IPL? How about in all T20 matches? asked Ajit Venugopal from India

The Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is due to celebrate his 44th birthday on July 7. He’s actually been the oldest IPL captain for a couple of years already: the previous record was held by Adam Gilchrist, who was 41 when he captained Kings XI Punjab for the last time, in Dharamsala in 2013. Gilchrist celebrated his impending retirement by bowling the last over of the innings – he was fairly safe, as Mumbai Indians needed 51 to win with the last pair at the crease – and took a wicket with the only ball he ever bowled in a senior T20 game. The table of the oldest captains in all T20 matches is skewed by the weird and wonderful selection of teams who now play official T20 internationals: there was a recent change at the top when 56-year-old Alan Dawson skippered the Falkland Islands against Costa Rica in Guacima last month. In all T20s, Ajit Ekanayake (46), Imran Tahir (45), Pearson Best of the Cayman Islands (44) and Misbah-ul-Haq (43) have captained when older than Dhoni, although Misbah is about to be overtaken.Imran Tahir (centre), who leads Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL, is currently the oldest captain on the T20 circuit, at age 45•Getty ImagesWhat’s the connection between Garry Sobers and the 1991 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner? asked Trent Jackson from England

I smell a sports-quiz question here! The Cheltenham Gold Cup, one of Britain’s premier National Hunt (jumps) horse races, was won in 1991 by Garrison Savannah, trained by Jenny Pitman and ridden by her son Mark. The same year, the horse finished second in the Grand National at Aintree, just failing to pull off a double achieved only by Golden Miller in 1934.The horse got its name from the Garrison Savannah racecourse in Barbados, just outside Bridgetown. The track’s most famous race is the Barbados Gold Cup. Horse racing has taken place there since the area was an army garrison, hence the name. And the link with arguably the island’s most famous son is that the former West Indies captain Garry Sobers was knighted there by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975, becoming Sir Garfield Sobers in front of a crowd of around 50,000.You wrote in last week’s column about the players who played the most Test matches without ever appearing in a white-ball international. What’s the reverse – who has played the most white-ball internationals without ever winning a Test cap? Is it David Miller? asked Liam Binyon from Australia

You’ve got it in one: the South African batter David Miller has so far appeared in 308 white-ball internationals (170 ODIs and 138 T20s) without ever playing in a Test match. Kieron Pollard, the West Indian, played 234 white-ball games (123 ODIs and 101 T20s), while Scotland’s Richie Berrington has so far appeared in 230 (123 ODIs and 97 T20s; Scotland haven’t yet played a Test). Another current player, the Australian legspinner Adam Zampa, comes next with 216 (111 ODIs and 95 T20s).Shiva Jayaraman of ESPNcricinfo’s stats team helped with some of the above answers.Use our feedback form, or the Ask Steven Facebook page to ask your stats and trivia questions

Stats – Defending champions New Zealand's sharp slide in a forgettable WTC cycle

Drawing a blank overseas, slumping pacers and wasting home advantage have left them at eighth out of nine teams in the points table

S Rajesh07-Mar-2023With just one series to go for them in the current cycle, it would be fair to say that New Zealand’s defence of their World Test Championship crown has gone rather badly. They are currently languishing in eighth place out of nine teams; and in fact, their opponents in this last series, Sri Lanka, still have the chance of making the final if they win both Tests.ESPNcricinfo LtdUnder normal circumstances, you would scoff at the possibility of Sri Lanka winning two out of two Tests in New Zealand. After all, they have won only one out of nine Test series in New Zealand, and that victory came way back in 1995. In 19 Tests in the country spanning 40 years, Sri Lanka have won exactly two; now they need to double that tally in a couple of weeks to give themselves any chance of qualifying for the final. However, thanks to New Zealand’s poor form in this cycle, Sri Lanka might fancy their chances of pulling off the improbable. How did New Zealand fall so steeply from being champions in the last cycle to rank eighth in the current one? Here are the key numbers comparing their previous campaign to this entirely forgettable one.

No longer unbeatable at home

What should give Sri Lanka the greatest encouragement is the fact that New Zealand were beaten by Bangladesh in a home Test last year. They recovered to win the second Test and draw the series, but their eight-wicket defeat encapsulates their dismal defence of the WTC crown.ESPNcricinfo LtdIn six home Tests in the current cycle, New Zealand only have a 3-3 win-loss record, with drawn series against Bangladesh, South Africa and England. This includes the two Tests against England which isn’t part of the WTC. Had England scored two more runs in that Wellington chase, New Zealand’s home record would have been 2-4. That is a huge slide from the 2019-21 cycle, when they had a 7-0 winning record in eight Tests at home.

Drawing a blank overseas

In the 2019-21 cycle, New Zealand had a 3-4 win-loss record overseas. They were clean swept 3-0 in Australia, but won a Test in Sri Lanka and two in England, including the WTC final (Their 1-0 win in England in 2021 wasn’t a part of the WTC).

Since that final, New Zealand haven’t won any of their seven overseas Tests, though they came close twice in Pakistan. Their results in England illustrate their slump: in 2021 they triumphed 1-0, but a year later they had no answers to England’s new-found aggression in a 3-0 series defeat. Surprisingly, since 2019, New Zealand have a 3-1 record against England in Tests which are not a part of the WTC, but 0-3 in Tests which are part of it.

The pace slump

Tim Southee took 70 wickets in 14 Tests at 21.2, Neil Wagner’s 55 wickets came at 22.87, Kyle Jamieson took 46 wickets at an incredible 14.17 and Trent Boult’s 46 wickets came at a slightly higher but still respectable average of 28.34. Together, New Zealand’s famed pace attack led their march to the WTC title in 2021, taking 242 wickets in 16 matches – that’s 15 per Test – at 24.16 (including the four Tests that weren’t part of the WTC).

They were particularly impressive at home, but didn’t do badly abroad either: Southee’s 70 wickets included match hauls of 6 for 78 in Colombo, 9 for 162 in Perth and 7 for 80 at Lord’s; Wagner took 17 wickets from three Tests in Australia at 22.76.ESPNcricinfo LtdIn the current cycle, though, Southee’s form has gone south – 45 wickets at 37.11 – while the others haven’t picked up the slack either. The absence of Boult and Jamieson hasn’t helped, and all these factors have contributed in the pace average dropping by almost 35%. Even when New Zealand have played their best attack, opposition batters have still found a way: Bangladesh scored 458 in that famous Mount Maunganui victory against a New Zealand attack consisting of Southee, Boult, Jamieson and Wagner.

Batters waste home advantage

New Zealand’s 7-0 home record in the 2019-21 cycle was built on solid contributions from their batters all the way down the order, from Tom Latham to Jamieson (226 runs at 56.5), Mitchell Santner (174 at 58) and even Wagner (117 at 39). Overall, their batters averaged 47.84 runs per wicket in eight home Tests (including the runs added through extras, that average goes up to 51.26.)

But in the last couple of years, that average has dropped quite significantly to 31.58. Their former captain and batting talisman Kane Williamson has had a relatively quiet period. He has played only seven of New Zealand’s 13 Tests in this cycle, and just two out of six at home. Williamson has scored 557 runs at 46.41 in these 13 Tests, but 332 of those – 59.6% – came in two innings, including an unbeaten 200 in Karachi. Seven times he was dismissed before reaching 25.

However, in the previous WTC cycle, Williamson was the standout batter at home, scoring 895 runs at 99.44. Six other batters scored 200-plus runs at 40-plus averages. Add their pace-bowling strength at home, and it isn’t difficult to see how New Zealand built the results they did. This time around, only Devon Conway and Tom Blundell have shown outstanding form at home. Latham’s average of 41.7 is boosted by an innings of 252 against Bangladesh, as in seven out of ten innings, he has been dismissed under 20.With the fast bowlers fading as well, the defending champions have fallen rather quickly from their pedestal. Thankfully for them, they have a chance to start afresh after this two-Test series against Sri Lanka.

Stats – Winless streak ends as Joe Root becomes England's most successful Test captain

For Kohli, it was the second innings defeat as captain, and also the second loss suffered after winning the toss

Sampath Bandarupalli28-Aug-202127 – Test wins as captain for Joe Root. He is now England’s most successful captain in Test cricket, surpassing Michael Vaughan’s 26 wins.17 – Number of home Test wins for Root as skipper, only behind Andrew Strauss’ 19.63 – Runs added by India after the fall of the fourth wicket in this match (over two innings), the second-lowest for them when they have batted twice. Their poorest effort came against Australia in 2017 in Pune, when they added just 41 runs.120 – The total out of India’s 356-run match aggregate that came after the first three wickets had gone down. It is the fifth-lowest for them overall, and the lowest since 1959.3.5 – False shots per wicket by India on the fourth day in Leeds. India lost their last eight wickets on Saturday while playing just 28 false shots. Contrastingly, they lost only two wickets on the third day despite playing 88 false shots. England needed 71 false strokes from the Indian batters to bowl them out for 78 in the first innings.ESPNcricinfo Ltd400 – Wickets for James Anderson in Test matches in England. He is only the second player to bag 400 or more Test wickets in one country after Muthiah Muralidaran (493 in Sri Lanka). The Leeds Test match was his 94th on home soil, the joint-most by anyone in a country, alongside Sachin Tendulkar in India.2 – Innings defeats for India in 64 Tests under Virat Kohli. The previous one came in 2018, also against England at Lord’s, by an innings and 159 runs. The defeat in Leeds is also the second time India have lost a Test where Kohli won the toss. The other such instance was against Australia in 2020 in Adelaide, where they were 36 all out in the second innings.6 – Test matches at home without a win for England before defeating India in Leeds. Their last home win came against Pakistan at Old Trafford last year. It was England’s longest winless streak in Tests at home since eight between 1989 and 1990. The innings win in Leeds was also England’s first win in eight Tests since defeating India in February.

Forget Santos & Caicedo: Chelsea have "one of the most exciting DMs in Europe"

Are Chelsea outside challengers for the Premier League title this season?

Based on the weekend’s results, they are, as Enzo Maresca’s Blues comfortably got the better of Burnley 2-0 on the road to remain second spot in the early league standings, while Liverpool and Manchester City fell to unwanted defeats.

Maresca’s men managed to pick up that routine win, even with Moises Caicedo out of the starting lineup at Turf Moor, as Chelsea’s standout £115m midfielder was rested after a gruelling international break with Ecuador.

Thankfully, the defensive midfield partnership that did start in Lancashire in Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos rose to the occasion, with Santos stealing many of the plaudits at the full-time whistle, despite Fernandez’s late strike sealing all three points.

Santos' standout performance vs Burnley

Fernandez rightfully received plenty of praise at the final whistle, with the World Cup winner now up to 11 goals and ten assists in 2025 for the Blues as a forward-thinking midfield spark.

But, with Caicedo out of the starting XI, Chelsea also needed a talent prepared to dig deep and do the required defensive work that the South American does week in week out, with the 24-year-old averaging 5.2 ball recoveries and winning 5.4 duels per Premier League contest this season, away from also chipping in with three goals and an assist.

Thankfully, Santos stepped up into his role effortlessly against Scott Parker’s hosts, with two tackles won, seven duels won, and four ball recoveries amassed, showing off the 21-year-old’s full-blooded approach.

On top of that, Santos also ended the game with one big chance created from his 34 accurate passes, with analyst Raj Chohan even stating that he provides a “lot of value” to the team as a stellar stand-in option for the likes of Caicedo.

The promising number 17 will hope he can get more first-team minutes soon, away from being in the shadow of the ex-Brighton and Hove Albion man.

But, he isn’t the only midfield asset being directly compared to Caicedo now.

Chelsea's next Caicedo

It’s clear that Chelsea have great faith in the youngsters rising the ranks at Stamford Bridge currently, with Maresca prepared to start a whole plethora of exciting, young talents, away from just throwing Santos into the first-team spotlight.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Indeed, in attack, Estevao has been handed chances galore this season to impress, with a Premier League goal and assist coming the hotly tipped Brazilian’s way subsequently.

Moreover, Marc Guiu would gift Fernandez his goal at Turf Moor on a plate, with the 19-year-old now becoming a regular impact player off the bench. Could Dario Essugo be the next starlet to make a wild impression?

Already, the £18.5m summer purchase – despite only being 20 years of age – has shone in some challenging environments for two loan sides in Chaves and Las Palmas in Liga Portugal and La Liga respectively.

His attritional, yet polished displays, have even led to scout Jacek Kulig hailing the Portuguese enforcer as a “one-man army.”

Moreover, Kulig also boldly labelled Essugo as “one of the most exciting DMs in Europe” for his continued excellence with Las Palmas, even as they succumbed to relegation.

In the current Chelsea set-up, based on his numbers last season in that relegation-troubled camp, he would surely shine as bright as Caicedo has managed in West London.

Looking at the table above, it’s clear that Essugo will be prepared to battle and tussle for Chelsea when first-team chances eventually arrive at his door, winning 4.9 duels per game last season in La Liga action, not a million miles off Caicedo’s 5.4 tally this campaign back in England.

Unfortunately, the only drawback for Essugo so far is that he is sidelined with a nasty injury at the moment, but he did shine briefly in Caicedo’s place against AC Milan in pre-season, with 100% of his ground duels won from just 17 minutes of action.

Thankfully, Maresca has Santos to fall back on in defensive midfield for the time being, if Caicedo continues to look fatigued.

But, do not rule out Essugo exploding onto the scene when he returns from the treatment room, with Chelsea’s midfield options full to the brim with quality.

Lionel Messi comparisons 'not helping' Lamine Yamal as ex-Barcelona star warns 'unnecessary pressure' could derail 18-year-old sensation

Lamine Yamal has been told that relentless comparisons with Lionel Messi are “not helping” his development, with “unnecessary pressure” being lumped onto the teenager’s shoulders. The Barcelona wonderkid has cleared every hurdle put in front of him so far, but he is only 18 years of age and could do without being asked to follow in the footsteps of an all-time great.

Next Messi: Yamal treading similar path to Argentine icon

Yamal has, however, had to get used to that discussion. Ever since he stepped out of the same La Masia academy system as Argentine GOAT Messi, similarities have been drawn between two exciting left-footed forwards.

A fearless approach to his game has allowed Yamal to turn a deaf ear to any detractors, with the record books being rewritten, and he has stated on a regular basis that he does not consider himself to be the ‘next Messi’. He intends to build his own legacy, but that will only be possible if distractions on and off the field can be avoided.

AdvertisementGettyGOAT comparison: Why Yamal vs Messi debate helps nobody

Ex-Barcelona midfielder Gaizka Mendieta has told : “Comparisons to Lionel Messi are not helping Lamine Yamal. It doesn't help anyone. It doesn't help mainly and mostly the player. You know, 'the number 10, there's the new Messi. He does things that Messi used to do at his age.' When I hear these conversations, it's about, 'name me how many Messis are in football history.' How many players like Messi have you seen in football history? I can maybe count three. Okay, and then how often have you seen these players? Huge gaps in between, I don't know, 20, 30, 40 years, 50 years. It's very rare that you see players like Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Messi and Ronaldo, I think it's quite unique that you see two players like that playing at the same time and era. So one is very difficult. And second, to put that pressure on a player of 18 years old that is going to play in the next 20 years at that level, I wish and I hope he will do it, but I think it's so difficult. It's very difficult. Not only the level of football, but also injuries and so many things. He’s 18, he's still growing. He's still developing muscle and bones. So there are so many factors there that we have to be careful about these comparisons. It’s unnecessary pressure on a player. Look, let's enjoy it. He is an amazing talent, let's enjoy what is there game by game. Let’s hope he will make it to 40 and be the next Messi. But there's no pressure. We've seen many others including Ansu Fati and Munir El Haddadi being called the next Messi and so many in Argentina, but it’s not that simple.”

Transfer trigger: Will Barcelona sign Rashford?

Yamal can call on the support of those around him at Camp Nou, with England international Marcus Rashford among those currently on hand to help shoulder the responsibility of providing goals and assists. He has impressed during a loan spell from Manchester United, but it remains to be seen whether a permanent transfer option will be triggered.

Mendieta added of the 28-year-old forward: “Marcus Rashford has been excellent. He's been fantastic for the team. Seven assists, I think with three goals. But, most importantly, he's an addition to the team. I think a deal will come down to finance. As a player, the way Marcus Rashford is playing, there will surely be interest, but it's about where Barca will be with their finances at that moment in time. And of course, what Rashford wants for his contract, how much he's prepared to negotiate, because we know Barca cannot afford to pay those contracts. On the sports side, for sure, 100%. The question is, can both sides come down to a financial agreement?

“It's sad to say, but I think the fact that Raphinha has been injured is helping. If Raphinha was fit, I'm sure they would be rotated. There would have been changes between them two. But the fact that he's been injured has allowed him to play regularly every game, which is helping to settle better. I think him being away from England and the Premier League has helped, he was always in the spotlight, not always for the right reasons.

“I think he's enjoying that life in Barcelona. It's great knowing he can go to restaurants, people will not bother you. He can go to the beach, he can get on with his lifestyle in Barcelona. And that's helping him to settle in the team. The style, I think, suits him. He doesn't need to run as much as he thought he had to do in the past and it's more about tactics and understanding when to make those runs and those passes or crosses or actions. I think all these factors are helping him to be the player he wants to be and the fans are enjoying it.”

Athletics Will Pay Tribute to Franchise Legend Rickey Henderson With Jersey Patch in 2025

The nomad Athletics finally appear to be doing something right.

On Wednesday, the franchise announced it will be wearing a uniform patch honoring franchise great Rickey Henderson during the 2025 season. The emblem will be a circle containing the name Rickey and his number, 24.

This was a no-brainer.

The Oakland Athletics selected Henderson in the fourth round of the 1976 MLB draft and he made his big league debut in 1979. He played 14 seasons for the franchise in four separate stints, from 1979 until '84, then from '89 to '93, '94 to '95, and again in 1998. He won a World Series with Oakland in 1989 and was named American League MVP with the franchise in 1990.

The A's retired Henderson's number and he is a member of the franchise's Hall of Fame. In 2009, the 10-time All-Star was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as a member of the Athletics.

Henderson died on December 20, 2024, after battling pneumonia.

He is MLB's career leader in runs (2,295), stolen bases (1,406), leadoff home runs (81), unintentional walks (2,129), most consecutive seasons with a home run (25) and most seasons leading the league in stolen bases (12).

Henderson is an all-time great and it's right of the A's to honor him this season.

Essex remain winless after 13-run loss in seesawing contest at Chelmsford

Jack Taylor’s second fifty in three matches made it three wins in a row for Gloucestershire to spark hopes of retaining the Men’s Vitality Blast.Gloucestershire had begun their defence with five straight defeats but victories over Kent Spitfires, Hampshire Hawks and now Essex have given hope they can sneak back to finals day via the back door.Captain Taylor had dragged his side to a par score of 184 with 50, to go with Ben Charlesworth’s 47 not out, before Josh Shaw’s three for 29 made sure the Eagles fell 13 runs short. The 2019 champions Essex remain winless, with their only points coming from a wash-out. They can now only get a maximum of 22 points with fourth placed Glamorgan already on 20 points. For the third home match in a row, Simon Harmer chose to bowl first but it was Gloucestershire who edged the powerplay. They managed 58 runs, par for the first six overs at the Ambassador Cruise Line Ground, but lost Miles Hammond just about caught at slip by a juggling Paul Walter and Cam Bancroft attempting back-to-back sixes. But Essex demonstrably won the middle overs by holding the visitors to just four boundaries from the end of the seventh over to the start of the 16th.Darcy Short failing to kick on from reaching 33 and Ollie Price barbequing himself didn’t help their cause, but tight bowling closed off their scoring options.Taylor’s hard running dragged Gloucestershire back into the innings before his hard-hitting got them closer to a defendable score.Firstly, he took Matt Critchley for three fours in an over and then he carted Luc Benkenstein for two huge sixes – one of which smashed a press box window. It helped the Gloucestershire skipper reach his seventh T20 fifty in 34 balls.A wicket in each of the last three overs kept the away side to 184, with Mohammad Amir taking two of them to return three for 33, while Charlesworth’s useful 31-ball cameo left him unbeaten on 47.In the two previous games at Chelmsford, Essex had been set targets of 221 and 220 and it had quickly been apparent the chase would be above them.On this occasion, they stayed in the fight despite losing regular wickets. Michael Pepper and Jordan Cox each went big then got out in the powerplay, while Dean Elgar suffered a tortured nine balls in a half-hour spell in the middle.Paul Walter threatened to be the man to put Essex in complete control with a spritely 39 but he and Benkenstein fell in the same Charlesworth over leaving the hosts needing 82 in eight overs.Critchley and Charlie Allison clubbed 21 and 17 off the 14th and 15th overs, but then Critchley was bowled by Shaw as the momentum swung like a Newton’s cradle. But Harmer clothed to point, Allison holed out, Noah Thain picked on long on, and Amir was run out as the game fell out of Essex’s grasp as Gloucestershire squeezed at the death.
